This bear which is captioned:

Quote
"Bear  unofficically was 6'4" from skull to
tail and weighed over 450 pounds. He Shot it at 30 yds."

looks bigger than 150 lbs to me. I cannot guess weights well but the head and ears look like it is much bigger than a smaller sized 150 lb. bear. I am not sure it adds up to 450 lbs.

Oh ok. I must suffer from reading comprehension problems. Well I don't know. The best way to look at bears is the skull measurement. It does not always mean a bigger bear I know that but it is much more conclusive than trying to guess live weight from some field photos. Some field photos are easier to get a guess from than others.

Most important - It looks like a bear that I would shoot at and be happy about harvesting.

Yes, back from Wyoming.

This is my bear from this year. He "unofficially" squared at 6'4" and wasnt 450. Heavy but not 450...not calling anyone out or anything.

By the way - I should clarify that I would be happy tagging a 150 lb bear too. Haha.

ghgetter that is a toad of a bear and looks long and big were was that?
i started this thread as a point i see alot of people posting pics with no weight and i find them better and does not distract from the trophy remember that bow is like 32" and it looks very big compared to that bear in the picture and to say 450+ i have seen  alot of bears and alot of bears that were said to be 400+ and only a very small % of the bears were close to that weight i am always happy to see a dead bear one less preditor for sure and i would of shot him but know way would i say 450+lbs on him

About 7 miles from where he should have been...the back of my truck! Mile or so off the crest trail, 3000' higher than my truck. First load of meat out (actually weighed after I got home and trimmed some fat off) was 78 lbs...flashlighted out and got to my truck at 11. Second load out the next morning was a grinder. Biggest mountain bear I had ever seen. Coast bear ok, but up that high, he was a biggun.

I have always judged the size by comparing to what a full grown butcher hog would look like.
I used to have a farm and raised pigs, so my  :twocents: is that animal compares to a 350 lber.
If you are ever near a farmer, stop and look at a hog, it can suprise you on what looks big.

That bear very well could be 400 lbs plus. Obviously without weighing it on a scale the weight will be debated and most are definately over estimated, but it is a big bear.

Compare it with this bear with a known weight of 380 gutted.

I know what you guy's are saying. I have a guy at work that is always telling me about these "500 pound-er" bears that he missed or hit and lost. I always just smile and say bummer or wow. He also told me about how he made the perfect shot on his deer this year but then had to go finish it off with his .45. Is it just me or does the perfect shot mean that you shouldn't have to make a follow up.

Pretty tough to ridicule someone without knowing for sure.... :twocents:

The first photo was taken from a standing postion looking down, that is the biggest mistake, makes the animal look half it's size. The hunter appears to be above the animal and the animals head is elevated more than the body, both factors make the bear look smaller.

The second photo was done much better and thus appears bigger.

Just my opinion.... :twocents:

That bear could very well be 450lbs.  Bears are one of the hardest animals to judge weight on.  Pose as BearPaw suggests is a big factor on how big an animal looks.
