Title: Whitetails in Sherman 101
Post by: ken1010 on October 26, 2009, 06:36:38 PM: I'm planning on a mid Nov trip to GMU 101 Sherman. It's whitetail only. As a noob to all this, is this a decent area for whitetails this year? Certainly, we'll get up early and get up as high as possible. It's long haul for me, but it appears to be a great area and the timing is good.

Stay as low as you can for whities. You are wasting your time going up high that time of year. Hunt thick brush and avoid hunting wide open areas where you can glass. Find a good brush choked drainage, hike in a ways and sit on your butt and wait for them to come to you.

Looks like going lower down will put me into trying to find suitable public land - sounds like much of the lower stuff in that unit is private. I didn't have a chance this year to scout any areas over there, so I'm going in cold. Am I wasting my time going over there for whitetails?

Most of the deer pop. IS whitetails, that is why it is open to only whitetails, There are some mulies there but a small percentage compared to the whitetail. Lots of public ground to hunt them

I was originally planning on starting up on Sherman pass and heading north, but that appears to be too high of an elevation for the whitetail? Looks like east of Curlew is much lower, but having never seen that area, I don't want to be challenged looking for public land - I have only 4 days scheduled over there and want to make the best use of it.

Post by: Gobble on October 27, 2009, 07:41:28 AM: Most whitetails like the lower elevations but not all. I killed a nice 5x5 2 years ago that was in a real thick, fairly high elevation that was as thick as Western Wa. (even looked like w.wa) They are everywhere up there.

Like was said....get a map, it will help you alot. A lot of whitetail like the lower elevations but don't limit yourself to just that. I have killed (and seen killed) many a BIG whitetail close to the very top in a foot of snow. A couple of years ago one of the guys from my camp got into a mess of bucks way up high in the kelley hill GMU. Fog is the killer up there. After 3 days of seeing 4 different big bucks ,he finally connected on a nice 4x5.( busted up rack though) He should have killed the one that fought with the one he tagged. :chuckle:

Post by: wrangler on October 27, 2009, 10:25:30 AM: i killed a super nice 5x5 in the middle of a blizzard on the last day of the rifle season on mount washington 10 years ago or so... he was with group of about 20 deer. dont even ask what i was doing up there, or why the deer were even up there. i didn't really know the area very well at the time and i wouldnt recommend hunting it for late whitetail... too high. BUT you know what the say.. they are were you find em!

I would hunt the Colville side of Sherman, down as close to the river as you can get. A good map will help you a lot. The Republic side is good but more private land in the key whitetail spots that time of year. But the big ones can be found on public land over there, I've seen one or two :chuckle: :rolleyes: Look for really thick stuff, be good at 15 yard shots, if you can shoot farther than that its not thick enough, scent cover is a must, and patients is even more important :chuckle: Good luck...

We have killed some dandy muleys in that area. Did you happen to shoot him on the North side of Mt. Washington? There always seems to be some good bucks shot there that are driven down from Snow Peak and up from the highway side.
