so last year i bought some georgia sport and trail boots for hunting , man these boots are way to loud kathump kathump , i need something lighter more of a hiking style but something that keeps me warm for november hunts what do you wear and what are your recomandations
-
danner pronghorns all the way.
-
rocky
-
Meindls, only available from Cabelas in the US. They're incredible boots from Germany, I have the Alpine hunters. These are more comfortable and and better suited for mountain hunting than the Danner boots I have used in the past.
-
rocky
+1
-
Meindls! My 1st year using them but they are much better than the Danners. However they are not going to be as light as a Danner. Very sturdy boot, comfortable and can handle all types of terrain with lots of ankle support. They are expensive!
-
Kenetreks

Using the same 600 gram Danner Trophys since 04 on Sept-Nov high mountain hunts. Would be a good November boot. Boot I really like is the old Italian Fabiano Alps boot, for non insulated. SmartWool socks. My experience. Hear a lot of people talking Mendle, and the Mendle could be a bit more water resistant w/o the stitchdown sole? Have 6 pairs of Goretex Danners and eventually they all weeped moisture.
-
i'm a danner fan. that's the only brand i wear :chuckle:

Nike most of the time, when things get ugly Danner or Schnee's.

Danners for me

If you hike a lot, don't buy Danner's in my opinion. In one year I walked out two pairs of Pronghorns. Both pairs leaked, and I broke the sole in one pair. I put Danner boot grease on after every time out, and they still leaked after a while. They are super light and comfy, but its hard to be comfortable when your feet are wet. I hike a *censored*load, weekly besides June and July, so these results aren't common I bet. I switched to Meindl Hunter and Perfekt Hikers, couldn't be happier. You can weather one hell of a storm in them, and comfortable as can be. Heavy kind of, but you get used to them.

Ive had the same abd luck with danners............they leak and were plain worn after one season
-
Maybe its the model, I hike more than most and was in the pooring rain this last week several times, no leaks and no cracks. :dunno:
-
Whites, a bit of $$$ at first but well worth it. As soon as you break them in, they are more comfortable than any other shoe I have worn. Well worth it!!!
-
i kinda like the idea of the pronghorns , i like that they are light , i was looking at the 400 gram?? but i dont want to buy something the wears out easily , i will only be using them during hunting seasons
-
kenetreck mountin extremes. best boot available imho. how can ANYONE wear danners?
-
+2 on the danner pronghorns ..........
-
Right now I'm set up with three pairs of boots: (1) LaSportivas for summer, (2) Danner 1000 gram thinsulate (an older model) for winter with no snow and (3) Hoffman winter pack boots for winter with snow and snowshoeing.
I've probably got one more summer of use left in my LaSportivas and I am also transitioning away from Danner. I bought a newer pair of Danners recently and they demolished my feet. My plan is to get into Kenetrek once my LaSportivas are done and probably move to a 2 boot system.
I also don't care for Whites. I feel that they take too long to break-in and have just never really impressed me. In fact, there is a shop in Spokane called "Nick's Custom Boots." Nick used to work for Whites and left to start his own company. I feel he makes a much better boot; however, you're going to pay for it.
-
You will love the Kennetreks, I am getting ready to send mine in to be resoled but I put alot of miles on my boots.
-
I used to love Danner boots and it seems quality has gone downhill the past 10 years. I hike quite a bit put a lot of miles on my boots. The last two pair of Danners leaked and stitching on the side of blew out on both pairs.
I switched to Vasque and Meindl. Have had no problems. Do not leak ever and more comfortable. The European made boots are in my opinion of better quality of mass produced American/Chinese made boots. Have not yet tried White Kennetrek or Schnees. I have heard good things about those brands.
-
Danners with the gortex work well for me. I also have a spendy pair of Cabelas boots that did not fit a friend. He ordered them online before the Post Falls store came in and "gave" them to me for $25. Score! They have the Cabelas version of gortex and they have been great too! My feet are always dry with Gortex!
-
Caterpillars, there not really hunting boots but i'm now shopping for some... thanks to this thread
-
I have a pair of Danner Pronghorns for hunting :'( and since they leak again "2nd pair" :bash: I have been wearing my Georgia Work boots, pretty bad two pairs of Pronghorns in three years "Danner replaced my originals" and I'm still counting on the good ole Georgia's.
-
Irish Setter Elk Tracker 860's. Best damn boots i've ever owned. Just bought my second pair last week cuz the first pair finally blew out after 5 years and many miles. Great boots!
-
Lowa Tibet! The boot will handle anything you can throw at it. The ONLY downfall was break-in time. It took 30 miles until they were completley broke in.
I had Danner Pronghorns before these. The only positive was lightweight. Leaked and when hunting mountains side hill all day the feet would become sore. Flexed to much for a heavy pack.
-
I go through a pair of Danner's every year. Will work great as a hunting boot for one archery and rifle season, but will begin to leak generally during spring turkey/bear season. They are comfy and light, and generally offer pretty good support, and are fairly inexpensive as far as gore tex boots go. I just recently bought a pair of the Meindl Ibex's which I like so far, have not used them much, still in the break in phase. They will see more use as the snow starts to fly and I'll see how they do. You guys who use the Keneteks, do you use the Mtn Hunters, or the more sorel type pack boots?
-
Danner chukka for early season, 600 gram Danner Frontiers for mid season, 1000 gram Danner Pronghorns for late season, and Whites Elk hunter packs if it gets real nasty.
-
Not sold on Danners every pair I've had has squeeked, I like merrel light hikers and vasque boots the vasque like hikers has a great shock plate in them . Never buy a boot that you cant try on first.
-
I use the Mtn Hunters as I hike in rocks and hunt Alaska where the shale can eat up a pair of boots without that rock protection on the bottom. Like their light weight and my feet feel good in them. Just a good word of note is the guides buy glue and put on all the stiching and seams as soon as they get their boots. As with most boots thats the part that seems to go bad
-
Depends on the type of hunting you do. My last pair of boots were danner pronghorn. I love those boots. They lasted me 2 full seasons of hunting/fishing/hiking/everything you can think of. Last week during the first part of the tird swoson with them they sprung a leak on a strait up down pore rain. I was pissed until I realized that I flat out wore those boots out. If you are just a weekend warrior I dont think it matters what you buy. If you hunt as much as a lot of us do on here than you need to fork out some dough on a good pair. I just bought a pair of Danner trophy to replace my pronghorns on monday. Yesterday I hiked 14 miles into my favorite basin with a brand new pair of boots. It was a dream hiking in these. Keep in mind also that I hike with a J107 full of gear. Lots of good boots out there to buy. I just prefer now more than ever to make sure they have a MADE IN USA stamp of approval on them.
-
Danner Elk Hunters..... Or Schnees for the snow.
-
wife wears 1000 gram Womens Danner Pronghorns. I generally wear Gore tex GI Bellvilles.
-
Meindl Denali's from Cabelas
-
I've wore Danners for years. Most have been top of the line models except a pair of pronghorns. ALL lost their waterproof ability after 6 months. ALL 10+ pair. Used hard and usually got no more than a year out of each pair. Went Kenetrek, and now still have waterproof boots after 3 years. They need to be resoled is it. Easy decision for me on which boots.
-
Danners all the way, Pronghorns to be exact.
This past general in the high country solidified that they are the best boot for my foot. I rarely had slips and was on some steep, wet, terrain. My feet never got wet once.
Danners for me
-
Not sold on Danners every pair I've had has squeeked,
My brother has some squeeky Danners. You can hear him squeeking from 50' away. Makes it really tough to sneak through the woods.
I tried a couple pairs of Danners and took both back. They just don't fit me worth a damn.
I ended up with the Trophy Series from Cabelas. They fit like a glove and have lasted almost 7 seasons. Don't leak a drop either. I went to order another pair a few weeks back and they're discontinued. :'(
The Cabeleas boots are the most comfortable, durable boot I've owned.
-
Having said I use Danners in an earlier post and seeing these other posts, I believe I would buy that Kenetrek for about $360. I don't see Danner listing the Trophy on their site anymore anyway. I kind of think Danner was the Big Show in the past, and is kind of going the way of GM. That Kenetrek has 2.8mm leather, while the Trophy had 3mm, but the wrap-around sole eliminates the access route for water around the stitch down sole. The Kenetrek has 400 grams insulation which is a versatile amount. Kenetrek calls their semi-permeable membrane "flexible", which should hold up longer than a standard Goretex membrane. I guess I changed my mind. Got an E-Mail from Danner just now, and they are discontinuing the Trophy Model.
-
That's weird that people on here complain about Danners. During my second deployment to Iraq I wore this exact type of
Danners
[/]http://www.danner.com/product/boots/danner+marine+temperate+mens-womens+military+boots.do][/ (http://www.danner.com/product/boots/danner+marine+temperate+mens-womens+military+boots.do)
and I never had a problem. They were by far the most comfortable boot I'd ever worn. The soles lasted and so did the water proofing. I did foot patrols every day with 70lbs of gear on and I guarantee I walked farther in 7 months than anyone here does during a hunting season. They worked great. I even wore them for two more hunting seasons after I got out. They kept my feet warm during the winter and my feet sweated very little (comparatively) during the hot summer in Iraq.
For the last two years I have worn this pair of boots ]http://www.danner.com/product/boots/elk+ridge+gtx+600g+insulated+hunting+boot+-+8.do] (http://www.danner.com/product/boots/elk+ridge+gtx+600g+insulated+hunting+boot+-+8.do)
For the last two hunting seasons and they have held up great. My feet stay dry and cool during early archery season and bear season and they keep my feet warm and dry during the wet late season. They are still very very comrfortable. I highly recommend Danners.
-
how can ANYONE wear danners?
:yeah:
IMHO, Danners suck! Meindl, Lowa, Kenetrek, La Sportiva, Hanwag, Vasque, Asolo, and Scarpa all make great boots. I agree that you shouldn't ever buy a pair of boots that you haven't tried on, so if you're doing mail order, I'd order two or three pair right around your size, and do it early so that you can return them as needed, until you get the right boot.
I got tired of trying to find a good boot for myself, so having read a glowing recommendation from Craig Boddington, I ordered a pair of custom made, High Country Hunters, from http://www.russellmoccasin.com/index.html . These boots are great so far. I've walked 16 miles in the last two days, my feet feel great, it was pouring rain on Monday, and my feet were dry as a bone. I expect that with proper care and some minor repairs, that these boots will last me about seven years.
My son wears a pair of Lowa Uplander boots, and he loves them. He has never had a blister, they are reasonably lightweight, and they are waterproof. Here's a link http://www.lowaboots.com/home/ .
Here is a link to a site that will give you a ton of info on all sorts of hunting/outdoor related equipment, from boots to binos.

I wear a pair of Raichle backpacking type boots i got from REI...they work great for me, but are 6-8 years old and pushing the limits of their life. when i buy up, i will be getting a pair of kennetrek mountain extremes after hearing nothing but good about them and checking out a pair that belong to a friend.
-
Danners allways! :)
-
I wear Asolo GTXs, watch out for the newer Vasques as well. As of 2006 Vasques are made in China and their quality of a once great boot went to crap.
I also had two sets of Danners fail in one year.

really? ive had the same pair now for 5 years. always keep them clean, use the danner products to clean them and keep the leather conditioned good. and i have never had one problem with them. and this season alone i have hiked over 30 miles.
-
I like the higher end, full leather, stitched down, airbob sole Danners. Cabela's Elk Hunter and similar Danner label style. I work them hard and no complaints. These are boots you have to break in, not the sneaker style glued together Pronghorns, real boots. I grease them regularly and get about 5 years out of them before the Gore-Tex gives out. The airbob sole is very quiet and cushy.
-
Switched this season from the Danners to the Meindls. I liked my Danners they were comfortable, but I blew them up. Two deer, elk, and turkey seasons and the toe caps cracked, and I pulled the arch of the sole off the body. They leaked horibky before that too. Also took a good season to break in before I didn't get blisters on my heels, still gave me hotspots. My new Meindl Ibex are comfortable, and have seen many miles already this year. No blisters, even when I scouted a 4 mile round trip with cotton gym socks. The leather did soak through on my during the general opener and I was more than a bit peeved. But it was VERY wet where we were, and after some bees wax they were rock solid last weekend. If they leak again they will go back for another pair, I love them that much. The soles are a little heavy, but grip in the wet stuff better than my Danners did...
-
All I know is if a boot is awsome during a combat deployment to Iraq and can last two more hunting seasons than it is an awsome boot. I have some friends that took Danners to A-Stan which is as rugged and remote as you can get and they both loved their Danners. Both held up very well. Climbing steep mountains. Rain, Snow, super high temps all with 70lbs of gear on and they held up like a champ. I can GUARANTEE you if you buy a good pair of Danners you can not go wrong. Like I said I guarantee you in 7 months I put more miles on in mine than anyone on this site did in two years of hunting. ANd my frined in A-Stan during his year tour there put more miles on than anyone here did in 4 years of hunting. They held up. Just take care of them.
-
Got an E-Mail from Danner just now, and they are discontinuing the Trophy Model.
I have two pairs of them, one uninsulated and one with 1000gr. thinsulate, I can't believe they are discontinuing them, they are awesome.
-
I wondered the same thing because in less than 3 days the boot is no longer on their web site. I have only had mine a couple days but I sure like them.
-
Not sure what to say I have probobly owned 50 pairs of boots ,an old cabelas pair was the most comfy, all gortex boots leaked withing months, a danner pair held for the longest , I HATE GORTEX because my expectations are never upheld, and that includes $300 gortex rainwear
-
Wow in 2 years and 4 years of hunting thats pretty impressive!!
-
I wear hanwag's and my feet feel better and better as the day goes on were as a couple of my pards (Rockys and Danners) could barely walk after a day on a steep ridge with lots of rocks and slides :dunno:
For just dinking around I wear Merrils and a pair of Filson highlanders.
-
On my second pair of Irish Setters in 5 years (just bought the new pair this summer). I love them, but everyone I know who owns a pair of Kenetreks swears by them. Fanatically.
I amy have to sack up and buy a pair in a couple of years.
-
Wow in 2 years and 4 years of hunting thats pretty impressive!!
It is what it is. If I sounded stuck up I appologize. I was just trying to relate that Danners are an excellant boot and trying to give an example of what a guy goes through in a year to show how well Danners are made. Currently our infantrymen in A-Stan are conducting foot patrol 5-6 days a week. Sometimes 7 days a week. During that day he can expect to hike 5-10 miles a day in terrain that is more rugged and harsher than any of us will face in our state, all while carrying 60-70lbs of gear. An infantrymans feet will (not bragging but stating a fact) see more rugged miles in one year in A-stan than any one of our feet will see in 4 years or more. If Danners can hold up to a tour in A-Stan or Iraq then they will hold up to anything any one on here can put them through.
(This statement does not apply to professional guides who regularly guide in the high country of the Rocky Mountains or in Alaska.)
-
I was torn between the Meindles at Cabelas and the Zamberlans.
I was worried about the Meindles being too hot.Because of the memory foam so I went with the Zamberlans.
Wow!!! What a great comfortable boot.I put a ton of hard miles on these within a couple days of buying them.Extremely comfy dry boots!!!
-
Danner pronghorns are the best boots... im a bigger guy and the arch support and comfort is unmatched...
-
Rocky with Gore Tex one pair insulated one uninsulated.
-
I just bought a pair of Meindl Alaskans. I won't ever try Vasque since they completely fell apart on me after a year. I looked at the Lowa's and Kenetreks but I didn't like either enough to pass up $90 worth of cabelas coupons plus cabelas points, so I went with the Meindl. I have only broke them in on some short hikes, but am really impressed with their quality and comfort.
I will second Nick's Boots in Spokane. I have a pair of hikers that have held up great through some rough use. They are going on 5 years old and will go in this winter for a little repair and reconditioning, but they are super comfortable.
I like Whites as a work boot, but not for a hiker. I had a hand me down pair that had been used by a cement finisher for 12 years and it lasted me another 6 doing construction work while I was in high school and college, with one resoling job while I owned them. He resoled them once.
-
Danner Pronghorn 400 thin. 5 year and looking like this is the last season. I am bad at keeping the leather oiled. Great boot, I will for sure get another pair.
-
Danner, air bob sole.
-
Danner, air bob sole.
So that was you I was following up the trail. :chuckle:
-
i think i may have decided to go with the danner pronghorns , im watching a pair on ebay
-
the air bobs rocks, danner elk hunter for me
-
European built boots for me...I currently use the Kenetrek Mountain Extreme's and love them. I'm one of the guys that have tried Danner's and hated every pair. Lots of squeeks and leather that streched out and fell apart in one season? The last pair I owned was the Pronghorn's, they might be ok for some styles of hunting but they fell apart in one season for me?
Any of these boots are top notch:
-Kenetrek
-Lowa
-Hanwag (If you've got the $$$, get these coupled with Lathrop & Sons custom insoles)
-Scarpa
-Meindl
Coon
-
Those insoles look interesting. I'd like to find some for my Kenetreks, something for the ball of my foot...
-
im abig guy with bad arch support it took me 20+ years of hunting before i found the danners prognhorn i will NEVER buy anything else.Im going to eastern montana, second year with this boot. Light comfortable and great arch and ankle support.
-
I cant believe no one has mentioned anything about Asolo's. By far and away the best boot I've ever worn. My hunting buddies wore Danners as well until they saw my pair of Asolos last through 4 sheep hunts. Las hunt I went on all 4 of us were wearing Asolo's. I really like the Asolo Alpinist. Great boot...light, great support, water tight and wear like iron.
-
Danner, and nothing less. :twocents:
-
Hubby has Irish Setters....his brother swears by Rocky...and I bought Lacrosse because they fit reasonably well and were on sale. I hate finding shoes I have really narrow feet and really high arches...I rarely find any shoes that actually have enough support. That said these boots are pretty comfy I need to add another arch support to them the one I put in is just not enough :bash: :bash:.....
-
I use these three boots Meindl, Whites "Smoke Jumper", Danner "canadian"
I'd like to try the Kenetrek and Lowa one day, but I've got no complaints from what I currently use.
-
Just bought these waiting for them to arrive.

Have worn Danner Pronghorns for years and haven't leaked once. Haven't tried many others but have had very good luck with these. Light and comfy for me. Had Rocky Cornstalkers before that. Worked pretty good but began to squeak real bad on every step.

seems like good boots , some good reviews on them , i didnt end up winning those proghorns on ebay , i think these rockys is what im gonna buy , anyone else on here have these particular boots
-
WOW, I cannot believe no one said anything about the most comfortable, best USA built boot out there today. Redwings. I have a pair of 606 Redwings and love them. It's there boot with all the commercials that you can where all day and your feet won't feel like they have been in a boot. It's true, great boot, never have leaked. I paid $220 for em and coat em up with Obenhaufs boot grease. Obenhaufs is the best boot grease there is. Built by firefighters to withstand chemicals, heat and water. Get an american boot and an american grease.
Redwings and Obenhaufs. NOTHING BETTER
-
how can ANYONE wear danners? :chuckle:
Thats funny there!!! I guess everyones foot is exactly the same shape as yours :dunno:...
I have been wearing Danners since '91, mainly work boots like the Rainforest or Hood light. Now I am an office puke I have been wearing the Pronghorn series and the Frontier in 600 gram for cold weather, love those boots for what I do. Granted I don't put 20 miles a day like some of you, but they have been comfortable and I have never had a problem with them the first year I use them. After a few years they may start leaking, but that is to be expected. My wife has a pair of the Danner Grouse a womens boot, she has had them for 8 years with no leaks and they are still comfortable. They have the air bob sole and she really likes them.
I do agree that the quality has gone done since they started making some of them in China.....
-
"Squeaky one's" :P.
-
Wow people are passionate about their boots. Kennetrek's no doubt about it, by far the best, most comfortable boot I have worn in the woods, won't look at any other brands anymore.
-
Danners for me
:yeah:

I wear the Schnee's Sheep Hunters by Lowa. They are a Great boot. I have had them now for 4 seasons and they are still going strong.
-
Danners for me. Just bought a pair of Blades for hunting this year and I absolutely love em. Break in time was virtually minutes!
-
I was a Danner boot fan for 25 years or so but I bought a pair of Kenetrek boots
and except for a little discomfort in my left big toe area :dunno:they are the best fitting boots I have worn!
-
10 year old Rocky Bear Claws. I only wear them when I am in the woods hunting and no other time. They still have a few years left in them. After my last 2 pairs of Danner Ft. Lewis boots I swore that I would never buy from that company again. They both lasted less than 6 months of light use before they fell appart. They were never waterproof and squeeked like I had mice in the soles.
-
I just ordered the jackals for early bow for elk and deer season for late elk and late deer season I wear the Canadians all from danner. The Jackals will fit like a glove. My uncle has had the same pair of grouse for the past 15 years and still no leaks. I would definately shop around and try on every pair you can. I will tell you one thing for sure, the stitching is everything when it comes to boots. Danners that are built with molded soles will last if you take extra care of them (Proghorns, jackals) clean them and moisturize them after most outings. The Canadians and hoods danner lights exc. will with stand a lot of neglect. Just make sure you clean and moisturize them after every season.
-
Russell Moccasins for me. Expensive but well worth it. First pair lasted me 10years till my foot grew. Now a buddies kid is wearing them. Got me a new pair this year, first pair they made wrong. They stepped up and made me a new pair and let me keep the original pair until they had me the replacement pair. I am sure lots hunt as hard or harder than I do, but i am also sure I hunt harder than most. These boots took all theabuse I could give them in nasty terrain and stayed in good shape. the leather is silicone tanned so no Gortex and no leaking.
-
Meindls,Wore them in Alaska last year Moose hunting for two weeks and the only time my feet got wet was when I fell in the river and the water went over the top.
Mike
-
Loved my old Rocky Pro Hunters, the best boot I ever owned, but when they finally wore out, the new cheap Rocky boots made today looked and felt terrible. I switched to the Danner Full Curl and the are very comfortable, dry and well made. I've put a lot of mile on them the last two seasons and they still show no sign of wear. Plenty of support and I like them almost as well as the Pro Hunters of 11 years ago.
-
Danner Pronghorns and Rocky Stalkers
