Title: coyote tips?
Post by: bowman on December 31, 2007, 09:29:54 PM: My friend and I have been seeing a lot of coyotes in these cornfields near his house and we are interested in trying to hunt them. We have tried a couple of times and only seem them moving through the cornfields. We never are able to call them in to bow distance.

We have to use a bow because of houses nearby. I was just wondering if you have any pointers on hunting these critters.

Last week we were done and on our way back to his house we crossed 4 cut cornfields and on the last one we had 5 coyote's run right in front of us about 70 yards and when we tried to sneak up they took off. Those animals are smart.

My unkle just ties clear fishing line to a small bush and gives it a jerk from the blind. couple of real nice call makers on this website as well youve probably noticed...

Figure out what it is, and try a distress call. Even a simple mouse sqeeker might bring them in, or an invading 'yote call might bring 'em over in defense of thier teritory.

If you do hit one, use a yote distress call, and you might bring the others in. Had a buddy kill four in a row last year by doing just that.

Why do you have to use a bow? Have access to a cross bow? Not sure if they are illegal for coyotes, I know they are not legal for deer or elk.

you could try to get some 22 cb shorts (quiet 22 shells)

Post by: bowman on January 01, 2008, 02:03:22 PM: Littletoes- I'm not sure what the coyotes are eating in the cornfields. There are a lot of birds that land out in the field so maybe birds. The feces is an oranges color, any ideas on what that might be?

The owner of the field said that we can only use a bow. He doesn't want us using a shotgun or a 22.

Maybe a good goose hunting blind, close to the ground, with a bit of scent to confuse their noses. Sounds like you have a challenge ahead of you!

Post by: bowman on January 01, 2008, 07:29:03 PM: We went out there tonight and saw one coyote. It came in about 60-70 yards until the wind swirled and that was that. We will try again sometime next week. Hopefully better luck.

Post by: high country on January 01, 2008, 10:09:21 PM: you need a decoy to get his attn off of you. the wind must be perfet and you will have to be 100% on top of your game. if you screw it up once you might get a second chance some day, if you screw it up twice you are done for good. they are that smart. we have taken dogs with the bow right out of the den if you can find it. above all else realize they have killer noses and their vision is near 300*. I would do as littletoes said and hit a mouse squeeker or use a remote caller but add a decoy. apiece of rabbit fur hung by fishing line from the nock on an arrow shaft has worked for me. I have just been thinking of using a fishing pole and a furball......just reel it in.

This summer my friend and I were out there and a coyote came out of this ditch about a yard away, it ran right over my feet. I'm not sure if they are still using that as there den but maybe.

Try to spot the coyotes before you try calling them in. Getting them to come into bow range will be extremely difficult with the terrain you are describing. If you spot one, or if you can't spot one but have a good idea on the direction they will be coming from, try this set up. Designate one person to be the caller and one the shooter. Since you have already spooked them they will almost certainly be more cautious and will try to circle downwind of you. Have the shooter about 30 yards to the downwind side of the caller, if you have a very slight breeze. If you have anything stronger than a breeze try to stretch this distance to about 50 yards. When the coyote has commited to coming close to the caller, stop calling. You want the coyote to be searching for you, not barreling in to eat. If they check up, give them some coaxing with a lip squeek or the little coaxer calls you can buy. When the coyote is in bow range, don't try to draw unless their attention is diverted from you. Once at full draw and ready to shoot, the caller can give a bark or whistle to get the coyote to stop for the shooter. If you have access to a decoy set that 20 yards upwind of the shooter.

If you have a decoy and remote caller you can set those 30 yards upwind of you and sit together and wait.

That is how I would approach it. Stick with simple distress calls: bird, rabbit, rodent.

Edit: I think they are eating corn and mice. Don't worry about matching their food source with a certain type of call.

If ya can...and no one will take it... leave the blind up 2-3 days in place without hunting it..so the dogs get used to it.

if ya dont have the gear already..ie electric caller and remote decoy then buy a 20 dollar pred call from bearmanric and tie a white feather to an arrow shaft about 12-18" off the ground. Unlikely ur gonna be able to draw on even one yote at 30-40 yards without a decoy to distract him...
