Title: weasel boxes and colony traps (home made)
Post by: Kain on October 28, 2009, 05:36:05 PM
Made some weasel boxes today.  Pretty simple design off the internet.  Im going to make a bigger pan out of some plastic from a  bucket.  Cant wait to try some trapping this winter.

Nice looking weasel box.  I'll bet you do real well with it.  In my opinion, weasels are one of the smelliest animals to skin.

Great looking traps!  I'm building some too.  I'll post pics tomorrow when I bring them home.

I hunt in a lot of areas that are gated and was looking for some light weight alternatives for boxes.  Was at the store and found some storage bins for about $2 each.  Cedar fence board was $3 and had to be built.  Thought I would experiment and see what you guys think.

Super light weight and stackable.  The trap barely clears and the lids on the bottom.  I wanted to find some opaque ones but I dont know if that will help or hurt.  Nothing that a bunch of leaves and twigs cant fix.  :chuckle: Anyways what you think?

Two sets of boxes side by side.

Great idea for an economical, easy to build weasel box. You could always spray paint with some camo colored , flat paint to make it a little less conspicuous. I like the fact that it takes up very little space.

I like them, I would spray paint a couple and leave a couple like that and see if there is any difference in your take numbers.

Im wondering if you spray glued the out side and put some dirt or sand on it...Also can you use the rat traps on weasel, cant use a scissors on mole? :dunno:

I will try the glue and paint ideas.  With the glue Im worried about them stacking afterwards.  That Krylon Fusion should stick to the plastic with a little scuffing.

Just going by what I was taught in class.  Law says no body gripping traps EXCEPT for mouse and rat traps.  Does not specify that you have to use them on rats.   :dunno:

Everyone says bloody meat.  Chicken livers seem to be the most recommended.   :dunno:

Rat traps are legal.  Fresh bloody meat works great and they are a real nice little furbearer to harvest and have tanned.

You can sell them, they look great on the end of muzzleloaders rifle cases, edges of the Indian Dream catchers, beaver hoops, lots of fun things you can do with them.  When they are white they are a very nice little fur.

Bloody feathers and lure. Bloody baits get the fur bloody.
