Title: Cats out of the Bag - Longtats Western WA Cat
Post by: LongTatLaw on October 28, 2009, 11:15:56 PM
Well,

This year I took what most people would say is the trophy of a life time...  Im afraid the hunt was fairly uneventful and the after story has been absolutely F***ing frustrating!  None the less...its not that often a WA hunter gets a decent cat,  especially on his 2nd season hunting the PNW...so Ill try to be positive and share the story.

I had been frustrated with the constant shots fired off in the near distance, the trucks parked at every freakin gate, and people in every corner of "my" hunting areas so I didnt have much faith that I would see anything on this particular mornings hunt...

So..I decided NOT to wear camo...

and not hit the woods an hour before sun up...

and not to worry about scent control...

and not worry that the wild apple I just picked screams with every bite...

and not to worry that the whispered conversation me and my hunting buddy were having as we walked around was more like a dull roar than a whisper

...guns comfortably slung over our shoulders

barely paying attention.

when I came around a corner...and saw what immediately struck me as a brown wild boar...  I instinctively shouldered my rifle while trying to figure out what I was looking at...

my second thought was it was a rather homely looking color phase bear.....???

well, once I had the animal at 40 yards and closing on me at a holly chit dead run I threw up and aimed for the chest of the cat which was charging me...

the shot touched off and in less than half a second I realized what had happened!

The cougar was at 12 yards when I shot her in the face :bash: :bash:

If I would have missed there would have been no next shot...she would have been on me and I doubt I would have even had time to have made a dumb face before she was on me...thats when Im guessing my hunting buddy might have shot the cat and me with her :bash:

I did not weigh the cat...
Im not sure how much she weighs...

I dont know what the skull will measure...and the score may be impossible since the skull was damaged by a huge damn slug going partially through it (entrance wound under her right eye).

The photos arent great...sorry about the B&W...  I also went home to get my gear, packboards, and changed into camo for the photos (blue jeans were accurate but just felt wrong for photos :chuckle:)

Thats the good...

I wont go into the bad because its still going on and I dont wanna make it worse by someone on here being with the WA Fish and Game but Ill give ya a hint...

Just because the reg's say you have to call them within 72 hrs of killing a cat...and ya have 5 days to get it sealed...that doesnt mean the F&G guys actually know what the F*** to do when you call...or how to get the sealing done, or how...or anything :bash: :bash: :bash:

nothing worse than trying to follow the rules and do the right thing and finding it nearly impossible...

any way

Ill stop bitching

its a pretty good cat I guess :dunno:

Biggest one Ive ever killed :P

PS- Im already in a bad mood so keep this thread positive or Ill delete it!

Thanks for reading

you can clearly see the entry hole under her right eye....  hint....  that aint no 30 cal ;)

I forgot to say thank you to several members of this site who helped me with this cat between the pack out...the pics....and the help with this headache of a process of the sealing! You know who u are...thanks!! ;)

eventually this cat will be done as a full body wall pedestal mount by Michelle Nelson if the F&G dont destroy the cape in the process of sealing it!

Me a TV show...hahahahahahha

thanks for the sweet suggestion but when I think about my hunting success...only one saying comes to mind...

the sun shines on a dogs ass every once in a while! :chuckle:

followed by a broken watch is right twice a day!

I bet I have the worst ratio on this site for hours spent hunting compared to hunting success.... :chuckle:

I spend about 200,000 hours hunting for every single animal I kill....    :bash: :bash: :bash:

but thanks...

I guess she's a pretty decent sized cat...  big enough for my wall ;)

well...I gave away some of the meat to a site member for helping with the pack out...

he has eaten more of this cat than i have so far but we both love it!

Im a little suprised to be honest!

Awesome story and pics!! how was the pucker factor?

My buddy always laughs at me because I always carry my .44mag whenever I'm in the woods, even if I'm just checking my cams or scouting, after getting a cat on one of my cam's I decide never again will I go into these woods not packing!.

Cool Cat, what caliber did you shoot her with? I helped a frind trck a wounded bocat one time and my only shot to finish off was between the eyes, so that is what I took with a 9mm, the skull was fine so I am thinking yours will be too. Man I wish I could get lucky like that. I was reading the story and at the end the first thought that came to mind was thank god he has combat training!!

Thanks everyone..

there may be a light at the end of the tunnel on F&G...I guess the issue is its hunting season and they are swamped.

They finally gave me what I wanted...written (email) documentation that I have attempted to comply with the sealing process and they were unable to meet their own requirements.

I leave for two weeks (during prime time..what a freakin amatuer move :bash:) and will get the cat sealed then!

as for all the great hunter comments...  please dont!

Next year will start my 5 years of not one dead animal streak and you will all seem very foolish! ;)

Its a lot of luck and a LOT of time in the woods!!!  hell...  with enough time in the woods ya gotta bump into something here and there!

My elk this year....skill
My oregon bow buck this year...skill

my cougar...idiots luck...no skill at all!

Id rather be lucky than good...thanks for the comments!

Dave, you should be good with freezing your hide then removing it prior to having it sealed.  To bad Washington isnt like Idaho and has places you can take the hide to get the molar pulled and flesh sample taken and sealed.  Can you imagine being a out of state hunter and having to wait around for the WDFG to seal the hide before taking it home.

Funny.
No the cougar skull would not go in the shed with the antlers. It would go on the kitchen table with my 20 inch bear skull. To be honest I would have rather killed a cougar then a bull.

Dave, when I had mine sealed, I froze it whole in a chest freezer, called the state, made a appointment, and took it to them frozen. It was at the F&G office by the capital. A guy came out, took some info, put the seal in the hide along side of the gut incision. After that the taxi skun it out, and I took the carcass home and cut it up. Pretty good eatin. If at all possible, do a lifesize. I did a rug because of money, but I wish I had a lifesize. Awesome cat!! Later

Wow, how did I miss this thread?

LTL, fantastic job on a great cat. Nice shot in a high stress environment, lol. I would have hated to see the outcome of that wrestling match had you missed. Mechelle would have had a heck of a time putting that cat back together, lol.
Love your stories and picks.

BTW, the pic of your wife carrying your elk rack with the baby in the front carry position, lol, is probably the coolest pic I have ever seen from this site or any other.

I did not weigh the cat...
Im not sure how much she weighs...

I dont know what the skull will measure...and the score may be impossible since the skull was damaged by a huge damn slug going partially through it (entrance wound under her right eye).

Similar situation happend to me in 2000. The DFW will send you a post card with statistics taken during "sealing". Age, weight, sex, etc...

338 Win Mag to the face at 20 feet !!! It took months for the taxidermist to fix her head...

Psychotic, I think Ray is right you might want to cool your jets... I am all about having difference in opinions and getting in heated conversations but keep it on the subject. You are obviously in the military if your at Fort Stewart and if I didn't know any better you might even know LTL. Keep it on the topic of hunting and leave the military out of it. This may be a forum but if you want to attack a Commissioned Officers military career like this in an open forum it might just get ugly for you. With technology these days I am sure it is not too difficult to find out who you are. In the military Slander and defilation of character are punishable under UCMJ and carry heavy consequences. KEEP IT ON SUBJECT!!! If you don't have proof, keep your mouth shut!

I'll bite.
Why are they black & white? Do you have some in color?
Title: Re: Cats out of the Bag - Longtats Western WA Cat
Post by: LongTatLaw on April 07, 2010, 07:59:12 PM
nope...the cat looked bigger in blk white but your pretty tech BTKR..maybe since they were coverted you know how to convert back...  Michelle asked for some color of the close up of the face for taxi purposes and i couldnt even get her that...

none the less, you could see beautiful trees in bloom and it wouldnt change the date it was killed...or the fact that I contacted the DNR with it unfrozen attempting to get it sealed to have Donnie C (the head cougar guy for the state of WA) tell me he couldnt get anyone to me that day and just go ahead and freeze it...  nor would it change the dozen or so people who saw it fresh killed and unfrozen including several that packed in to take field photos with me and pack it out...

Im not sure what Psychotic's issue is...

I dont think I know him...  hard to tell since he doesnt provide any actual information on his profile. Im guessing he's a wanna be soldier...  his IP address is Washington but maybe his heart is in 3rd ID...which Id understand given all the years I was stationed there...

I contacted him through pm asking what his issue was an if he wanted to meet up...  he said no and had bad things to say about my military career  :dunno:

Ive been talked to about him by mods and Ive said I dont necessarily think he needs to be banned...  but its a little annoying...

like Ive said before, if ya see a crime...call a cop...dont harass me here... it accomplishes nothing!

but Ill point out some simple facts:
1. he has no info about himself..no name...no kills...nothing
2. he has made no positive contribution to the site
3. he claims my cat was killed in september when several long timers from this site recieved news of the kill within the hour and were asked to
help me pack it out of the woods...during deer rifle season!
4. He says theres no private land to hunt on the coast of GA which is a ridiculous lie...and then he said the islands off GA are preserves with no
hunting for years...which killbilly linked a rebuttal to in 2 seconds..not that it pertains to where I did hunt...and he says he knows where I was
but wont state where he thinks it is...
5. now he makes comments about how Im afraid to leave the wire when for one I have a CIB and two...I can document a career of the exact
   opposite!

Sooo...  my real name is David Raines and Im an Infantry Captain. Anyone with access to AKO can track me down with that info and my combat experience is well documented...  Ill lay my combat resume next to any mans Ive seen!

As for a no name, no pictures, no threads, non-contributor that wants to talk trash about my kills and my military record...Im not concerned!!
but I will offer my very best Christmas Story style triple dog dare for Psychotic to lay his name, rank, and branch on the table...but I wouldnt hold ur breath boys and girls...it aint gonna happen because just as my military record stands for itself..so would his...and then he'd have to change his signature from "fights the things you fear most" to "attempts to not screw up your pay too often" ...

sooooo, new comer...  contribute your worth to the site...  or go away!

and as always, if ya got a game violation to report...call the DNR

WA poacher turn in # - 1-877-933-9847
GA poacher turn in # - 1-800-241-4113

my cell is linked to both hunting license accounts...Ill wait nervously for their call!

ps- Thanks Ranger for the support... meat eaters stick together!

BTKR, so what exactly does being an Administrator or Moderator make you a “professional” of…human relations? Don’t think so; all it means is you help to keep things civil on the board.  Up until this point I have been civil and enjoyed this board tremendously. I always respect everyone’s opinion and try to keep an open mind about their point of view.
As a soon to be Master Sergeant it’s safe to say that I am a professional on military regulations & authority. I don’t know LTL but he has made it very apparent that he is a Captain. What Psychotic said goes above this board and he knows it. It is against military regulations and authority to berate a Commissioned Officer in uniform, off duty or even in an open forum such as this. If anything I am trying to keep the idiot from saying anything else that could come back to bite him in his brown eye.  I am not sure if you have ever been in or around the military; but if you have any respect for the military you know its not ok. As a military professional it is well within my means to say something to Psychotic, regardless of the fact that I am not an Administrator or Moderator. It would be my suggestion to delete his post and those preceding it. This forum is so that people can speak their mind as I did, but at the same time as a military professional it was not ok what he said and I am not going to just sit back and say nothing. If you or any of the other Moderators feel the need to delete my profile because I voiced my opinion then do what you got to do…either way I will not lose sleep over it…

I don't think Psycotic is going to be able to respond. Here's a thing to understand for future readers. If you're going to make open accusations here regarding illegal taking of game you should pony up some credible evidence. It wouldn't hurt to contact the game wardens FIRST. I cannot lend any credibility to such accusations without evidence and while I have to walk a line to help our forum maintain credibility I have to also take action at times to protect against unwarranted destruction of the community and harassment of members. People are innocent until guilty in a court of law. I am fully aware that there is the court of public opinion as well. Let's get on with this and I have removed the latest post from Psycotic.

I also dont wanna see this thread deleted ect...Im very proud of my cougar and want this thread to stay around... if it was illegally killed Id hope it be deleted as the cops be fast on my tail...thats not the case so lets just leave it to aid the DNR in their efforts to catch the TATER... accusations made without standing are of no concern to me! Yes he has gone past what UCMJ allows but Ive got thick skin...sooo

lets not be deleting any threads...any profiles...anything...hell, even leave lil Psychotic's profile alone...  who knows..we wait long enough he might contribute something positive to the board!  Im dying to see all the beasts he has slain!

the real reason i didnt call bucklucky is because the cougar was actually raised and loved by his daughter...  it was on the way to BL's house for a daily helping of milk when I shot it!!

and his daughter still hasnt forgiven me for killing a elk fawn nearby last year :chuckle:
