Wow, that was an experience. I really had a great time looking at all the animals around buffalo. Many of you may know I used a guide and I found it absolutely the most boring hunting experience I've ever had. It was quite apparent that all he cared about was the deer hunters coming the day we left. It was not a hunt. It was a shoot. As soon as the animals hit the dirt and were strung up off he went to go look at deer or to work on securing leases. We were supposed to go prairie dog shooting. That never happened except the small dog town by the bunkhouse. I was able to burn a few rounds on them which was fun. We were supposed to go coyote hunting which never happened at all. I'm pissed because I asked before booking if there would be p-dog shooting and / or coyote hunting if we tag out right away. He said "sure, whatever you want to do" That really meant. Whatever you want to do just as long as it's looking at deer. I'm really trying hard not to be bitter but I am!! VERY!!. When I went out for the doe tag I wanted to use my 45/70 with iron sights and put a stalk on a herd. On the way out he said to the guy with us that had tagged out that "we wont shoot any doe more than 10 feet off the road". Thats where I just said F IT to my self, shot an easy doe and just went and watched TV. I was carefull when I booked this, I tried to asked the right questions and it didn't work. So buyer beware. Be VERY thorough when booking a guide. It'd be interesting to hear what bearpaw has to say. :dunno: I wont say this will be the last time I'll use a guide because it probably wont but I was bitterly disappointed.
On a positive note, those Antelope are COOL!!!! I cannot wait to go back. It'll be interesting to actually hunt them next time though. The buck I wanted was one with good curls. It looked like most of the tall thick bucks didn't really have curls. Don't quite get that, but I also wanted ivory tips. Any how I got a 13ish buck with good curl and ivory tips. The cutters are a bit week but It'll work for me. It'll tell you what these animals are gorgeous. My shot was a frontal at 256. I center punched and the game was over.
Also the deer and lope numbers around buffalo are absolutely incredible. Lots of 3/4 and 5 point muleys but only saw one that was really heavy. I don't think any would go 30" Apparently the big ones are the last to come down in the winter from the high country.
Well, here's some pics.
I know I look rediculous but I simply cannot tell you how cold I was. Wow, wyoming can be BRUTAL!!
-
Sorry about your guide experience. That's a nice buck though. What a difference a couple of weeks can make on the weather.
-
I can only assume that maybe a lot of hunters want it that way. Fast and easy and back to the lodge. I don't know. So maybe I expected too much. I think that if his guide who was there took me out then it would have been different. That kid was really neat. A WA resident I might add. I really enjoyed talking with him when he was around. I hunted with the outfitter himself though. He's definately a busy guy with responsibilities but where does that leave me? Oh' well. Maybe next time.

Nice job! That's a pretty cool sign :)

Good job on the Sage Rat..... They are addicting aren't they......
Too bad to hear about the guided part, Reason I guess I like the DYI is so much more-- it is enjoyable..... Atleast now you'll know for your next speed goat trip....
Got some rich in-laws they live that style of hunting, have the guide find the animals, call them when they are on them, line up their shot, send them back to their cozy camp for a glass of brandy.... They miss everything that hunt is about..... The animals, their activities, getting on them without getting busted, the fun and the work involved.
The only guided I'm dying to go on is my Muskoxen trip ---If I ever get drawn....
-
Nice job you SON-A-BIATCH. :chuckle: A very cold one at that. :chuckle:
Nice Antelope and I refrain from ever using a guide for all the reasons you stated and a bunch more. Sorry to hear that.
-
well ya got the goat and learned some Important stuff..I did the self hunt there and it was great..Now ya know some area.Glad ya tagged out..
-
Congrats on your goat. Sorry about the guide experience but now you have a taste and can go DIY next time.

I would definately do a DIY but had nobody to go with and figured I'd hire a guide. I got sick of waiting for my buds to make up there minds and to be able to clear there schedules. Got some guys hooked now, so we'll see what happens next. :dunno: MH? BH2BT? RAS? Anybody else????

Rasbo is in,need the info,,,havent dusted one in a long while..Intel brother
-
I like the pictures sorry about the guide it would have been fun to sneak on one with your iron sights. Now you know the area and if you go with Rasbo you will have fun and he can really cook if you can get bearmanrick in and then you could call in the whole wyoming coyote population.
-
Nice Buck Gutpile, sucks the hunt wasn't what you expected.

Well Bighorns2bushytails wants to go. MHWASH said he'd like to go. A couple of others have PM'd me and may want to go as well. We'll just need to put up a sticky when it's time to apply and figure things out. Some units should be easy to draw unfortunately it's mostly private ground, at least where I was anyways. We'll put our heads together and figure out where there's a lot of public land and the chances of drawing are high. I think in WY up to 6 can apply as a group. There's definately plenty of those things to go around though. Got a couple of months yet to really start worying about it.

I guess the scars are from crawling under fences since they don't like to jump them. Went to some sports shop in Buffalo. Don't know the name. Was just buying a doe tag. Did you happen to see the motel with the big meat pole right next to the kiddy play land? I should have got a pic. That was classic. There were about 5 carcasses hanging right on main street in the middle of the parking lot. Not exactly vegan friendly.

Yep, I know the one you are talking about, I have a picture of that around here somewhere. There are a few of those around Wyoming. Can you imagine ever seeing that in downtown Seattle? :chuckle:

Wyoming is still pure to the ways of hanging game in plain sight, just like parking your car...love that state!

Hell YEAH!
-
Wyoming is what America was.
-
If I was a single guy, I'd likely move there. Centrally located in the US for maximum hunting oppty in neighboring states, and some of the lowest taxes in the nation. So it's a bit windy, I can live with that.
-
you should look into a do it yourself hunt in wyoming. there is so much public land that its rediculous there is pronghorn every were ecspecially around riverton and rawlins if you contact the wy game and fish they will gladly get you the public land maps and harvest reports. Over by Sheridan, Buffalo and Gillette is all privat land with little public start looking torwards the west central side of the state, you will also know that the prong horn have much better horn growth in these areas
-
That looks like a hellofa trip. Some great looking bucks....looks like they are laughin at ya...Grats on the speed goat
-
great pictures

My mom lives in Cody and I have done the Antelope thing a time or two. It is the absolute easiest thing to do in the world. Let me know if you ever need a partner to put in with. I watch the outdoor shows where they put on the mile stalk in cactus and I feel for the poor hunters that think this is the only way to do it. (those cactus will be a pain in your A$$) Hell, all ya gotta do is show em a white shirt if they spook and they will stop running and or come in running to you (usually). We killed 5 bucks in 2hours doing this. Sucks that your guide Juked you. I would call the outfitter and give him a piece of your mind for sure.

Hey Gutpile, Talk to me in the spring if you're still interested, I've been itching to get back to Wyoming for another hunt. We went down in the Red desert area before and had a good DIY hunt.

I took three buds to Buffalo two years ago on a DIY. Hunted Unit 16. Over the counter tags..I hunted all public land..We stayed at the local KOA..they rent cabins if you don't want to haul a trailer....very nice town..We were done in the first two days and went to the Casper area to fill our 6 doe tags..Came home with 10 antelope..I can't wait to go back. They also have a sweet Gun range..for sighting in..Great town.
