So, this year no one was sure what to expect. So scouting we went. Spent a couple of days in that "unknown" location and saw about 100 deer. More fawns then we have seen in years. Seemed like maybe this would be a good year. So when we heard that snow was a distinct possibility, we were very excited. Anyway, as we were scouting, got a brief glimpse of a large rack as it departed over a hill in a place that was unexpected.
When the season started, anticipation was high in our camp. We decided to work our normal areas for the opener, but it was nagging at me about the deer from the scouting trip. So, my buddy and I decided to give it a go there. we got out just before light and found areas to sit. Nothing was happening so I decided to take a quiet walk in the woods..... About 9:30 I began to work across the hill and see if I could kick something out towards my buddy. I was moving cautiously and saw a deer moving across ahead of me... a buck!! It looked like a 2 point on one side so i manuevered to get a better look. Found a tree to lean on and was scoping him when I caught movement behind him and above. All I saw was horns.... yes.... Slid my sights to him and down he went. My buddy was just over the knoll and had him in his sights for a brief time and could not see the horns thru a tree.
After looking at the scouting pictures, we determined it was indeed the same buck and he was literally about 75 yards from where he was spotted then. So if anyone ever doubts the validity of spending some time in the woods prior to hunting......

Great buck. Looks like the scope bit you a little :bash:. Great memories right there

No scope bite...mud and blood for me...

Nice job! I saw that buck hanging and I'm actually not sure that the pictures do it justice - it's really a dandy.
My dad and I saw you up there opening weekend. We stopped and talked to you again the morning after you shot that buck, as well, when you were looking around with your spotting scope.
We found a spot (down the road further than the hillside we looked at) to walk into a canyon that couldn't be seen off of the road and walked in. He ended up shooting a little three point probably two hours after we talked to you.
Did anyone else in your camp end up with a buck?
