I'm headed out for the weekend with friends who will be elk hunting (modern firearm westside) with the primary goal of scouting the area for next year's early archery season. I'd like to bring my rifle plus shotgun along in the event I come across a bear or a grouse, but don't know if this presents a problem. I won't be hunting elk and don't have a tag to do so during the modern season. Will I run afoul of the law if I carrry my rifle or shotgun in the field?

You shouldnt to my knowledge. But wear flame orange as required.
I hunt for bear during modern firearm elk sometimes and have never had trouble. My tag is for archery elk.

Thanks man. My tag is for archery elk as well. It just makes sense to scout when the roads are open and you can cover a lot of ground in your truck. Every year I plan on doing it, but this is the first year when I'll actually make it out.

Good luck. I would just carry your tag with you IF you still have it. I cant see it being a problem...but who knows.
Cheers~

we had a post like this just the other day as long as you wear orange and have a bear tag should be no problem

and you know what, that day you go scouting for elk without a gun is the day you will see a bear.

You will be legal, but be prepared for some "inquisitive" questioning if you run into a gamie.
