I was wondering if anyone has ever hunted around Jordan, MT for Muleys? I and 3 other friends are heading there over Thanksgiving and are mainly planning on hunting the CMR (Charles M. Russell Wildlife Area). Anybody have any tips or suggestions on where to find good bucks? Not looking for any secret honey holes, just maybe a smaller general area to concentrate on since there is so much country over there. Thanks.

Make sure the CMR is open for the days you will be there. I remember that it used to close prior to the rest of the state. Been a few years since I checked into it though.

Thanks, I'll re-check.

never went - i had back surgery instead and returned my tags that year. i have some buddies that try and go there every year. Best of luck

We drove into Jordan last week to get gas....Warning!!!! Take your anti-depessants before entering town!!! I am not kidding you, what a pile of dirt that town is!!! I felt like shooting myself or jumping off a bridge or something! No wonder everything is for sale, nobody in their right mind wants to stay there!!!
By the way, we did not hunt near Jordan.......I don't plan on going back either. :o

BigFoot you have mail.

Is;nt that where the montana freemen or militia was holden off the fbi a few years ago.

Yah, the malitia thing was about 15 miles west of town. No money in that town, poor people. Locals get pissed when you tip the waitresses. I guess it's not a common practice in nowhereville to tip . You will see lots of deer but the 30 incher isnt hiding behind every bush. Lots of 20-24 inch 4points.

Lots of bucks in the cmr . Just have to hike for em . By the way - dont pick up any sheds in there :bash: ;)

I am heading over there next week and will be home on the 20th and will let you know how we do if you haven't left by then. We are going to hunt the north side of the res. for starters i believe. First time for us too. We will have a small boat and plan to try to get away from the people and hike from there. nwhunter

Make sure you check the REG's, I am almost positive that the CMR is closed that late in the season. Good luck!!

make sure that the weather is not gonna be windy at all going across that reservoir even in a light wind can get nasty, my dad and i hunted around jordan back in 2002, i took a decent 4 point my dad missed a very nice buck and ended up with a decent 3 point, we did spend one day out on the cmr, all we did was go out across the bay and the wind was blowing, since the bay was small and protected we figured no big deal, ive never been so scared on a boat in my life as i was coming back across, the rest of the week we spent hunting on some family friends ranch

Your damn right there depressed! Wouldn't you be if the feds came in and labeled your small town the Anti Governemnt capitol of the US! Now you know why everything is for sale. Trust me it won't sell.
I have hunted Montana on and off for 17 years and some of the biggest bucks I have seen is near Jordan. I have hunted every corner of the state including the southeast. If it rain or snows, don't travel any non maintained roads. You will be walking out. That red dirt turns to grease.

I've hunted there several years ago, check with the local taxidermist, he can often provide names and #'s of local ranchers that will allow access, expect to pay a set fee if an animal is harvested. We met Nick Murnion (County Prosecutor) while back there and hunted on his uncles ranch aprx. 10 miles east of town. You can also contact local state game office for referrals of ranches that are enrolled in there hunter access program. "The Big Dry" is a large ranch with Muleys and Whitetails. The deer usually start rutting around mid November, so your timing is good.

Thanks to everyone for your input.
-
Yeah I think it closes before thanksgiving
-
I just got back from the CMR and it closes for mulies on 11-15. There are good areas just outside the CMR and the rut will be going strong.
-
Yep...LOTS of BLM land that is out of the CMR and is between CMR and ag land... in many cases, that is where the deer are hanging! Does will be using that ag, bucks will be coiming out the CMR, through the BLM to get to the does...
Good Luck!! Let us know how you do!

I'll definitely throw some pics up when we get back......if we get anything. I'm going to have to start researching some BLM and Block Management land.

good luck man!
