Title: Wanting to buy new shotgun
Post by: jordano on November 05, 2009, 01:51:05 PM
I would like to get a new waterfowl gun but where is a good place to go around here or is the internet better? I want to buy a quality gun that wont break the bank. Very good quality and durability. Any one have any ideas where to look or anything about any?

pump or semi auto?  I have been looking at the new remington 887 nitro mag.. what are you shooting now?

I would try to get a good one and spend a little extra.  The total price tag can be a little rough, but if your never going to get rid of it.  Then it's a small price to pay.  Get one that is comfortable and throws to the shoulder nice.  Esentially get the one that fits you best.  Good semi-autos are the Benelli, Beretta, Winchesters.  Good pumps are the Benelli Nova, Remington 870 Express & Wing Master and possibly the new Remington.  Check them all out.  Good luck.

Browning  :chuckle:,  or then like h2o said in semi the novas are pretty good for the money and them dang 870's just go forever for very little $, in semi's bennelli or beretta, and Browning..

Jordano has an 870.. But I would stay away from the 887. It feels like a toy.

I have a Nova, nice gun but the forend rattles a lot when it is on a sling, quite annoying in the turkey woods...  Has a feature to be able to eject only the shell in the chamber and not the rest, nice if you want to quick swap in a goose round.

The most important thing is fit.  You can buy the most expensive, cream of the crop scattergun but if it doesn't fit you right, it will be nothing but headaches for you.  I am a Rem guy, but I have shot one of those Beretta Xtrema 2 semis, and I was highly impressed.  Good luck and let us know what you get and how you like it!

If you dont want to break the bank you cant go wrong with an 870, the nova and bps both cost significantly more, if youre goin semiauto most can be had for around the same price when it comes to reputable brands

Agree and Disagree, very, very good deals can be had second hand if your not set on just one, i bought a BPS stalker used for 250.00 not long ago from a pawn shop.. and i have seen alot of novas and 870's out there..

wow! thank you all for all the input! I have an 870 express right now and it has not held up well at all.. yet my dad has a wingmaster he has had for 25 years and it looks better than my 5 year old gun.. I am looking at the Rem 887 nitro mag in advantage max-4 or the stoeger pump in advantage max-4. I am looking for a pump not a semi though.

If you're in East Wenatchee Hooked on Toys, High Mountain Hunting, One shot, and Bi-mart all have good guns.

I just got a Benelli SBE II from High Mountain.  I ordered a 12/26 and they got me a 12/28.  A little pissed about that, but I kept it.  I only went with a 26" barrel to reduce front end weight, but the benelli 28" is lighter up front than my 26" SX2 so its a win for me in the end.

A SBE is the only way to go! ;)

A SBE is the only way to go! ;)

but for those who dont have the money, there are great values out there..plus not everyone needs a gun that nice for how much they hunt.. like I hunt with a  mossberg maverick model 88, probably the cheapest pump shotgun you can buy!

The way I figure it, if your gonna buy a gun.... why not save a little longer and buy the best. I personally own 2 SBE's and 2 SBE II's. I also own remingtons, Mossbergs, Brownings, and a Beretta. But I only hunt with my SBE's. Yes, you can say I believe they are bar none, the best! Thats just my  :twocents:

Don't forget to keep in mind the amount shooting you may do with gun you choose. If you plan on shooting it for more than hunting, ie: trap, skeet, or sporting clays, save a little more money and get a gun that can handle the numbers you may plan to put through it.

Went to Cabela's in Lacey and they had the 887 Nitro Mag in the camo. I shouldered it and talked with the guy and it felt awesome! it is lighter than my 870 express with a 26" barrel and the 887 has a 28" barrel. it felt amazing. Think I am going with this one when the price was $449. Dont think you can really beat that.

ya I am very fortuneate! I think part of the payment on it will be a Christmas Present from mom and dad, since a poor college kid doesnt have a whole lot of mulah haha but I am thinking this gun will last me a long, long time compared to my 870 express that looks like it is 25 years old and really worn instead of 5 years old... very dissappointed in it.

I hunt a ton every year. I shoot probably close to 50 ducks a year and as many geese as possible so a little bit more money and a better investment is something I could really use.

well that would be very nice of him! That is where I am from. I am just over at college at UW right now. But there are a ton of places to go around on the river and out to the basin and everything is less than an hour and a half drive which isnt too bad. you take what ya get.

I am looking at a new 870 youth for my daughter, I have always shot Mossberg though, not cause of preference but affordability at the time of purchase. Been good guns so far, but collected a lot of dust the last 5 or 10 years.

Yeah, they are 359. White Elephant doesn't have the pink camo model I want to get her. Northwest Collector Arms on Pines is where I saw it first, he is the same price, I will probably give him the sale, he is a great guy to deal with.

Same here.  Going to the Community college getting my AA currently.  Working full time on top of it and scraping pennies.  Thank god my parents chipped in and bought me the gun.  I shoot well into 100 ducks a year and as many geese as I can get into.  That coupled with pheasants, quail, grouse, and chukars I shoot well into 500 rounds easy a year.  A good reliable gun is what I needed and they came through.  Waterfowl hunting is my absolute passion 8)

If you're ever back in town and wanna hunt lemme know, we could hookup and go slay some ducks :hello:  Sounds like yo ugot a good gun that fits and was right for the price!
