Spring black bear hunt applications due March 13
OLYMPIA - Hunters may now submit applications for spring black bear hunting permits, applicable to specific areas of western and eastern Washington.
To be eligible for a permit, hunters must purchase and submit an application to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) by midnight March 13.
A drawing will be held in mid-March for 295 permits in western Washington and 235 permits on the east side of the state. Successful applicants will be notified by March 31.
To apply for a permit, hunters must purchase a special permit application and a 2008 hunting license that includes bear as a species option. Hunting licenses, bear transport tags and bear permit applications may be purchased online (https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ ), by phone (866-246-9453) or at any license vendor in the state.
Applications, which require a correct hunt choice number, may be submitted online at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ or by calling (877) 945-3492. Hunt options, including hunt numbers, in western Washington are:
Hunt #7014 (Copalis): 100 permits will be issued for a season running April 15 through June 15 in the portion of game management unit (GMU) 642 that is designated as the hunt area by Rayonier timber company.
Hunt #7015 (Kapowsin): 100 permits will be issued for a season running April 15 through June 15 in the portion of GMUs 653 and/or 654 that is designated as the hunt area by Hancock Forest Management.
Hunt #7016 (Capitol Forest): 50 permits will be issued for a season running April 15 through June 15 in the portion of Capitol Forest within GMU 663.
Hunt #7017 (North Skagit): 20 permits will be issued for a season running April 15 through May 31 in the portion of GMU 418 designated as the hunt area by DNR, Sierra Pacific, and Grandy Lake Timber Company.
Hunt #7018 (Monroe): 25 permits will be issued for a season running April 15 through May 31 in the portion of GMU 448 that is designated as the hunt area by the Washington Department of Natural Resources and Longview Timber Lands.
Hunters selected for the Kapowsin Tree Farm hunt must purchase an access permit from Hancock Forest Management by calling (800) 782-1493. Hunters should also contact Kapowsin Tree Farm prior to submitting an application to find out what areas within the tree farm are open to hunters.
Hunters selected for the Copalis hunt must obtain a Recreational Use Permit and should contact Rayonier timber company at (360) 533-7000 during regular business hours.
Spring black bear hunts are also scheduled in 13 game management units in eastern Washington from April 15 to May 31. More information on hunts scheduled on both sides of the state is available on page 56 in the 2007 Big Game Hunting Rules pamphlet (http://wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/game/hunter/hunter.htm ).
Any legal weapon used during the modern firearm, archery or muzzleloader seasons can be used for spring black bear hunts. Bait or hounds are not allowed for bear hunting.

Thanks for posting this Jackalope.
So who will be putting in for what?
I'm probably only going to put in for Hunt #7016 (Capitol Forest):
-
Copalis is supposed to thick with bears, I'll be putting in for that.
Thanks for the reminder,
Coon
-
Hey...Im putting in and Cap City is probably closest but for those you you all...not me because I know everything...but for some of those dumb people who cant seem to learn the geography...(again...not referring to myself... :P)
where are the following areas?
Copalis
Kapowsin
North Skagit
Monroe
-
I think my only app will be for Monroe.
I assume its near the town.
-
I wonder why they only printed descriptions of the units on the westside and not the open units on the eastside?
3 of us in my group were drawn for Copalis last year and we only saw one small bear. The bummer was we had to take off work to get the access permit as they closed at like 4 every day. After talking with the foresters and other timber workers in the area we soon realized that they do not have a damage problem. The was confirmed by employees of Rayonier. The state F&G asked to place the hunt there more for opportunity rather then damage control. We never saw anyone that killed a bear and only heard a couple rumors. We know there are bears there in the fall, but we did not see many in the spring.
I am really thinking hard about Monroe as my number one and Skagit as my number two. First year permits can be golden.
-
I agree on the first year tags. That's why Im down to one choice. They slaughtered em in Kapowsin and Capitol forest the first year and the second year they were not that good. I suspect Monroe Closest to my house and Skagit will be good for one year also.
-
dont u ignore me.....lol

Not sure about Kapowsin, but they nailed the bears the first two years in CF. They also did real well in the 03,04 & 05 general seasons. We are not seeing the sign or critters like we used to. That is why they dropped the permits down to 50 while they continue their study.
I would pick Monroe first as it is closest to me, but I am sure the Skagit unit will have some big bears.
-
I wish they would open the Snoqualmie tree farm for spring that place is full of Big bears. :dunno:
Copalis -Near lake Quinault
Kapowsin -Near Buckley
North Skagit -Highway 20ish I assume
Monroe- near the Town
-
dont u ignore me.....lol
Sorry..you say something? LOL
The ones mentioned are on the westside.
From Oly:
Copalis is West and North.
Kapowsin is North and a little East
North Skagit is North of Seattle and South of Canada
Monroe is North and a little East
-
Thats right billy...glad you knew who I was talking trash to...lol
cool cool.
Ill do some traveling for good hunting but dont wanna put in for something so far off that I wont hunt it right.
-
monroe is probably an hour and a half drive from oly? sound about right?
where is the hunt in monroe? thats right around the corner from my house. i drove up through stossel on dnr land saturday and alls i could think was there's got to be some bears around here that need to be hunted. you guys could camp in my driveway.
-
Hey Jack...
My mortgage is really high...how long is it ok for me to camp in your driveway?? lol :P
-
I might put in for a an east side tag. Anybody need a partner??? Never hunted bear before, would like to give it a try if i could pull a tag.
-
Hey Jack...
My mortgage is really high...how long is it ok for me to camp in your driveway?? lol :P
Now that is funny.
-
May set this year out after pulling tags 3 years running :chuckle: But then again, starting to get the Capitol figured out ;) Might just be our year :dunno:
-

my driveway is a hill...and the last time somebody camped in it, they only lasted a night.

If you get drawn you will want to make a trip up before the season to check out the road closures, slides and washouts. The last storm really put a hurtin' on some of the roads. You will still be able to access most your usual haunts though.
-
Well you have to figure I will be drawing one of those Monroe tags so you guys will be fighting for what's left!! :violent1:

Just from experience I agree with this. I know the peak really well and I drew the tag last spring. I only saw 3 bears and I hunted my butt off (well, part of it :chuckle:)
From hunting in the past regular seasons I have done better.
I gonna put in for east side and make a vacation out of it if I pull tag.
Steve
-
If any of you guys pull an eastside tag get ahold of me. I scored the first spring bear hunt in 111 last year. not my first pick of hunt areas, but we saw bears....hell we shot bears.
-
I think im gonna pull the same story from actionshooter.....go for eastern ...if I get it...vaca a bit. ;) Never been spring bear hunting..could be fun! Good luck to all.
-
I'd like to put in for Capitol Peak but I'm not sure I will, as I don't want to waste my points, and I'm sure it will be a disappointment after having drawn it and hunted it successfully the first year they had the spring hunt in '04. I REALLY would like to put in for a couple of the northeast hunts, but with a newborn baby I'm not sure me going away for a week or two would be real popular with my wife....so I'm thinking that idea is out too. I suppose I will probably just apply for a point, and spend any time I do have in the Spring fishing and/or scouting out some new close-to-home areas for next year's muzzleloader elk hunt
-
The Monroe tag is in unit 448 which is across Hwy 2 from you Jack and is actually where my house is, Stossel is in 460. But there are no bears here anyway so you better put in for one of the good units. ;)
-
there are no bears here anyway
that is so wierd...what the hell were those really big black labs doing running around all by themselves up in the woods that i saw then...hmmmm...somebody needs to take better care of their wierd looking overly large dogs that are very scared of people. :dunno:
thanks for the heads up and clarification.
i am starting to learn my home turf a little bit, but just getting started.
-
Let's just hope the drawing goes right the first time..
Don't want to break out the sign too many times this year.

Thanks for the update! If I don't see any Bar in North Skagit, maybe I'll run into some of you characters. That's half the fun of hunt'in. Monroe-well where? When I did volunteer work at the Arlington trout hatchery they put me on to the land behind the salmon hatchery in Monroe/Sultan area. I hunted it about 6 times over two years. Lots of sign! Both in the berrypatches & trails leading to the backside of the hatchery (fish eaters). No luck but I heard of several big ones taken. I'm a little shaky about eating bear meat from a fish eater. I think I'll try N Skagit as I live in Stanwood-it will take some scouting though as I'm not familiar w/the area. You guys hunting food sources, still hunt'in, or callin? I'm still pretty junior in the bear dept.
-

Stanhood eh?! I grew up there! Class of 94~
-
Yup Saleen, Stanwood. Been here 4 yrs since retiring from teaching auto mech in CA for 35 yrs (whew!-actually fun & I got $ for it). Nice country up here-when does my lawn stop being soggy? Did you do any bear hunt'in in the Arlington/Darrington area? I need help baaaad. Used to popp'in black bear over acorns & wild grape in Crescent City, CA but if this is the same game up here, the bears changed the rules-definately hunt'in & not kill'in!
-
Head out to Concrete area...although my fed ex buddy has seen a few blackies on the road just around stanwood...although...not much place to hunt em nowadays.
I tossed my deer carcass from this year outside my dads place (6 acres, woods, etc) in Stanwood...by Alan Acres Tree Farm...it didnt last long at all. Something drug the whole thing out (torso part). I would think out by Darrington there should be some spots too...but come nowadays, I live in Redmond and hunt around Issaquah...trying to help out the encroaching yuppies from seeing too many bears...dont want to mess up their Saabs... ;)
By the way...the lawn stops being soggy for about 5 days in August..dats it.
-
Just a heads up. Permit aps are due Thursday.
-
Might as well wait for the 2nd deadline :chuckle:

Made me laugh out loud, then my heart sunk as the realization set in.. :chuckle:

So rumor has it that spring hunting bears is easier... their more active during daylight and after grasses and such...
anyone agree or disagree?
dave
-
On the westside I would disagree. We don't seem to have the wide open grassy hill sides in our spring gmu's. I find that they are on the move more in the fall when they are trying to fatten up for winter. I would be interested to hear what others think.
-
I would say Blues might be easier as they are concentrated on a food source, but if you use those tactics in the fall, then they are also concentrated on a food source. Nah...wouldn't say its easier.
-
Curious to your thoughts on Bear near coastal areas in this state? Looks like just one area in that draw anyhow. We always hunted spring bear (if not on the stands over bait) along coastal regions. The bears love those new sprouts to get their digestive tracts in order. When do the bears here come out of hiberantion? Referring to the west side. I suppose their are some that really don't go into too much of a deep hibernation due to having a food source availible during the very mild winters? What are some of the tactics here in the spring? My favorite method to hunt them is out here in this state so thinking of spot and stalk and do some more calling, curious to what some of you that regulary take Washington bears, do extra. Of course when I am drawn that is....
-
curious to what some of you that regulary take Washington bears, do extra
Mostly calling, some glassing with lots of listening and some luck.
-
i notice no real marked difference in bears ive seen in spring as opposed to fall..........i like to find old bogs or small brackish ponds on timberland then look for some sort of natural funnel near a big patch of skunk cabbage, or berries.. then hang a stand..... i also like to watch power line cuts.
-
Well I finally got my spring bear application submitted tonight...and did my uncle's for him as well.
Dang, just mine cost over $120. :bash:
Course that included a fishing license too (which I'll probably never use.)
-
i was unclear in my last post.......i notice no real difference in activity/feeding/sightings/
-
bobcat, why are you buying a fishing license if you are not going? :dunno:
-
Course that included a fishing license too (which I'll probably never use.)
Same here.
-
bobcat, why are you buying a fishing license if you are not going? :dunno:
Just in case I decide to go on the spur of the moment and if that happens I don't want to have to go to a store like wal mart and depend on some dimwit to sell me a license. Besides, honestly I don't mind donating money to the WDFW. I hope they put it to good use.
-
bob...we could always find a use for that fishing license. as long as you don't mind a little drive up to one of the -s- rivers.
-
I might have to take you up on that. With my luck I sure wouldn't expect to actually catch anything, but it would be a great excuse to just get out of the house and see some new scenery.
-
I put in for Kapowsin, wish me luck...
-
My son and I also put in for Kapowsin. Not sure what the price of gas will do to the application process this year.
-
My concern is it will do nothing to the application process, but it will have a huge impact on guys deciding to hunt closer to home. And possible wasted permits, from guys just bagging it...I hate to see someone get a nice permit and stay close to home, instead of utilizing it...
-
I would think that with the high price of gas that many people who would have otherwise put in for eastside spring bear, may have chosen to only apply for the westside permits. So if there is any effect, I would expect to see less applicants for the eastside permits and more applicants for the westside permits. Also possibly less applicants overall.
-
I know my first choices were closer to home....north skagit and monroe areas...we shall see. Not really based on the gas prices, although...man it is getting to be stupid expensive to drive.
-
I put in for the eastside, If I draw I'll go over for a week. If I drew closer to home I would probably spend more in gas in the long run.
Steve
-
I kept it close to home, 49 degrees and Huckleberry, but not because of gas prices. Just easier to skip out of work and make a day trip.
-
If I really wanted a bear I would have applied for different units, but do to lack of interest and high gas prices I put in for the two closest units. If drawn for one I will probably hunt alot, if drawn for the other I will try to put in at least 3 weekends maybe more.
-
When do we find out results?
-
When do we find out results?
Hopefully before the season. :o
I would imagine within a couple weeks.
-
do we know the day they are doing the drawing? are they informing by mail or email or check the site or what???
-
check online maybe..........:chuckle:
-
"A drawing will be held in mid-March for 295 permits in western Washington and 235 permits on the east side of the state. Successful applicants will be notified by March 31."
When you applied, you were given the option of giving the WSDFW your email so they could contact you via email, instead of snail mail.
Best of luck to all.
I would be willing to bet we can check online too....
-
drawing will be held in mid-March for 295 permits
Weren't they due in mid-March? :chuckle:
