Title: Whidbey Island BT's-UPDATE 11-20-09
Post by: patton1 on November 06, 2009, 02:28:19 PM
Pulled my cam today and realized what a dumb@$$ I am.  I decided to be cheap  on Sunday and not change my batteries that I figured were getting low.  My camera died Tuesday night.  I still got 315 pics but am pretty disappointed with my self.  I got pics two of the regular bucks and a ton of does.

Those pictures do not have to be high quality to see how nice those bucks are. Congrats on getting them on camera.

Nice!  You've got the right idea - face the camera away from the sun's path across the sky (lower in fall/winter too remember) and position it a bit lower or shim it angling down a tad.  Nice bucks, keep em coming!

Thanks for the replies.  I'm really excited for late archery. I'm hoping to get my first BT.  I'm originally from Michigan, so I'm used to WT hunting.  This is a whole new world for me. I'm gonna put my cam back out Sunday, so hopefully I'll have some better pics next Friday

I think you will find hunting BT alot like hunting WT, they can be patterned and waited out.. Spot a stalk is alot of fun also..

I've hunted Michigan...ONCE.  I tagged a deer but dang, talk about hunting pressure!!  There are more bowhunters per square mile in Michigan than any other state in the US.  That's a fact!

The blacktails are tricky but you're well on your way with those photos!  You have found does with buck in tow.  Hunt those does for the late archery dates.  Peak breeding will occur before the 25th but bucks will still be trolling all day so watch the wind, hunt all day if you can (focus on 11-3 mid-day).  Buck will often travel across trails to scent check them.  This way they can check more trails and key in on does who are leaving the right smells.  Deer lay down scent from their interdigital glands, located between the hooves, and bucks key in on this to determine when and which does traveled on the trail.

There are many folks on this site who regularly take nice bucks.  PM me and we can talk more about your hunting area and how you might approach bowhunting it.

Nice pics Patton!  Good to see you have permission to hunt some place here on Whidbey.  Now you just need to join our archery club!  Good luck and tag that big one.  Tell Phil to get his license and get out there with you.

That's a stout buck!  You must have a good source of apples.  This time of year that is a great food supplement aside from being great for trailcam pics.

Patton,  quit posting pics of our Island deer,  do you want to get over run!  :bash: Just kidding,  nice deer!  Must be nice to be a P3 sailor and have Fridays off!   :twocents: Thanksgiving I expect to see pics posted of that big one on the ground.  Don't let Phil get in the pic and ruin it.   :yike:

EP-3 sailor and yes it is great. :IBCOOL: Hopefully I'll have one of the nice bucks on turkey day. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much. It's like waiting for x-mas to come.
