This is my very first bull, I have been hunting with my own license since 2004 and now finally I get to fill my Elk tag. I have the deer down to a science and now I am much more confident with these very smart animals. This elk was taken near kelso/longview area. I had scouted this area about a month ago and saw 7 cows. And today, opening day, the first 5 minutes of daylight I walked slowly towards the clear cut we scouted and there I saw 3 elk. Two cow and then there he was, I just saw antlers and knew theere were at least 3. Shot him in the lungs at 6:47, gutted, and had the head packed to the truck by 8:00. By 9:40 we had the elk packed to the truck and ready for breakfast. It was an awesome day, and to top it off I was using my dad, who passed away, win. .308. It was an awesome experience. But now my season is over. :(

when you say weight are you talking field dressed, and quartered with the hide still on? plus the head?
-
Elkaholic- yea live weight, and shoot for the hanging weight while you are at it!!
-
Im not good at guessing weight but I'd guess live weight around 485 lbs and hanging weight around 300 if it is skinned and the head and legs removed?
-
Congrats on your first bull harvest...permanent elk fever from here on out!!

Congrats on your bull. Mark

Elk fever is right, it is so nice when all the hard work that goes in to elk hunting, and years of being patient finally pays off. Not a trophy by any means but young and going to taste great. I cant wait to try some elk steaks on the fire. And thanks for all the congrats guys
