I see this Spokane hunt on e-bay. I talk to the guy, call his references. Everything seems great over the phone, so I buy the hunt.
First:
He tells me that he leased 3000 acres north of Spokane.
He tells me that he only does a handful of hunts a year.
He tells me that he is going to send me a bunch of trail camera pictures.
Then:
He tells me that he doesn't have any pictures of bucks because it is to warm and they are nocturnal.
I tell him that I have a broken leg and I am on a knee scooter.
He tells me that it's ok because he is going to drop me off at the blind.
He tells me that he has stopped baiting 3 weeks before I get there so as not to spook the deer. I offer to pay for the corn if he will just continue to bait. He agrees.
He sends me 2 pictures of bucks taken with his cell phone off of his computer moniter.
I get there, then:
I go to Walmart and purchase 2 bags of shelled corn for bait.
He tells me that he has changed the plans and we are going to stop at the road and cut through the woods a hundred yards. Ended up being about a half a mile through brush, over fallen branches, and over a fence. He didn't have a flash light so he borrows mine.
He tells me that no sense hunting after 8:30 because all of the deer have bedded down until dusk. We saw 3 does.
I ask him to put out the bait at the original hunting spot and he does.
He tells me that he is going to pick me up at 12:30 to start hunting by 1. He is late. We get there after 2pm.
There are 5 guys 200 yards from my blind, and they are going to do a deer drive right now.
At dusk I see a buck, I shoot, I have maybe a 100 inch 8 point. He guts the deer leaves the heart, lung, genitals, bladder, and a handful of feces in it.
He marks my tag for me by notching out the 7 and 11. I point out to him that the month is on the bottom of the tag, and only the 7 and Nov. should be notched out.
I agree to meet him in the morning to skin and quarter my deer so I can take it back to Renton. I get there and he has cut the cape in front of the shoulder on one side, and has made 5 cuts, inches deep into the hind quarters. I am shocked and pissed. He tells me that he has never skinned a deer before.
I take over broken leg and all, skin, quarter, and de-bone the deer myself.
He doesn't have 1 mount in his whole house???
I don't think he ever shot a deer in his life.
What do you think???
-
Wow what a lame guide. People who make excuses and can't keep their word piss me off.
Can you link to the auction or the seller's current auctions so the rest of us are aware of him?
-
I think if this is real you got taken.....and I would make it know the guy is a fruad.
-
I cant stop laughing! Sounds like an awesome hunt! LOL
-
Where's the pic of the buck? Major bummer, sounds like you got taken, at least you shot a buck though. Name the outfit so we are all aware of the joker.
-
How does that saying go, "Fool me once and you'll never fool anybody else" !!
-
wow. thats pretty bad for a guide service. i hope you didnt have to pay too much for that.
-
Let's see some pics of the buck...
Good thing you weren't holding out for a monster...
Sounds like this guy took the online ebay/hunting guide course :chuckle:
-
He didn't have a name for his guide service. His initials are S.S. from Spokane. He is a Fireman/Paramedic/Plastic Surgeons Assistant.
I have had 4 people guess tell me his name since posting this.
-
Nice buck. BTW - SS is not me. :chuckle:
-
WOW....I don't even know what to say. Is he a licensed guide. I would name him so others on here won't have to go through that.
-
I don't know what the legal ramifications are, so I won't name him. I have given enough information here to identify him.
No he isn't licensed. He said that it wasn't a requirement.
If I had know how inept he was, I could have just told him what to do, or did it myself. I went into this trusting he knew what he was doing.
Live and learn.
-
Live and learn.
I geuss that says it best.
-
I'm pretty sure you have to have a business license to sell guiding services in WA, so he is in the wrong. I'm pretty sure by naming him you aren't doing anything illegal. Just like saying you had a back experience with a certain fastfood chain or something a long those lines. Too bad.
Michael
-
No license requirement in WA to be a hunting guide. Anyone can do it. Sounds like you paid someone to guide you to a deer, and you shot a deer where he put you. In a way we completed his end of the bargain. That being said he sounds like a serious loser who took advantage of you. You should post his name up if you feel it will protect another hunter from paying for these services. There is nothing that he can do about that, and if he does not want bad press then provide a quality hunt. Also please post up what you paid for the hunt.
-
dbllinger is correct. If you paid for bad service you are allowed to say you felt you got bad service and state the name of the company. He did sell you a service and you feel you got the short end of the stick.
Please advise your hunting family for we do not do this. It is not slander. I went to mickydees the other day and I didn't like the service, the cashier barely spook any english. See it is legal to tell others of bad service.

Thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression if you made money from providing guiding services, you had to have a license so the gov can take their cut... good info to know!
Michael
-
not to state the obvious(maybe) but you should post negative feedback on his ebay site at a minimum.
-
Wow, you got a bad deal all around. I myself like already said would post his name. Like said he provided a service and you were unhappy with it, nothing wrong in that.
And he screwed up your deer cape, you got it bad all the way around.

Is this the one that is also trying to get people to buy his elk hunts??

And there I did not even say his name :)
-
Head-butt him and barry him alive in the 3000 acres he leased. Sounds a lot like somebody I know, who unfortunately is a member of this site, and actually posted a response on this thread. Congrats on the buck though, I would shoot him for sure. By the way sir, you are a trooper for doing all that with a busted leg!
-
something about that pic leads me on to believe it was a cut and paste deal. if it was from his computer you would think it would be bigger. i clicked on it and it was pretty small. i thik this is just a guy who has seen some elk and wants to make money off of people. i personally think he is a bit of a scam
-
That's the one BLKBEARKLR!
The deal with the elk hunt is that there are 28 cows, a 6x6, and a 5x5. I don't know much more that he had 2 guys out there already who quit and went home after 2 days. I was pissed and didn't ask why?
Here is the hunt I bought. It says muzzle loader, but I talked to him before I bought it and worked the same price for Modern Firearm.
If he was upfront and honest about not knowing anything about hunting, I could of helped him out.
The bottom line is that he has access to some property where deer live. Ok, put up a blind next to some heavily used deer trails in August. Throw some corn out there when it is legal, set a trail camera pointed at the bait pile, and tell me what is out there.
I have 2 Bushnell mini's set out. Me and a coworker of mine have all the Blacktail deer named. We have an Excell spreadsheet showing when the bucks as well as does come by. We also have a Black Bear and a Bobcat on video.
I booked the hut in Spokane before we had permission to hunt this piece close to home.
I am from Michigan. We get to hunt 2 bucks, and sometimes 1 doe a day for 90+ days. Rifle season is only 2 weeks but archery is from October 1st until January 3rd. I wish I could archery hunt here for 3 months even if I only get to shoot 1 deer.
-
I think the price would have tipped me off. But I've seen people pay a lot more than that and come home with nothing. There's a saying " you get what you pay for".
-
My friends dad booked an Eastern Washington elk hunt off of ebay earlier this fall, I don't know if it was the same guy, but who he was with, he hunted all day, it got dark, the guide said camp was just over the next ridge, well, it wasn't, they ended up going 6 miles in the dark, the guide didn't have a flash light, eventually they hit the highway, and hitchhiked back to town. Could be the same..

That guide would not have made it to the fricken highway with me, he would still be out there trying to figure out what happened to him.
300MAGNUM, sorry you got a bum deal out of this, at least people are aware of him now. And what kind of shady crap he is doing. Hopefully it does not happen to another member.
-
Yeah I am thinking you got taken. Why would anyone try and cape a deer that had never even skinned on befor. Depending on the damage it can more than likely be repaired. I never say "can" til I see the damage. Don't like getting peoples hopes up.
Here is a Bear Rug I did several months ago that required something like 137" of sewing. That did not include the wedges in the arm pits that every bear rug gets.

Price is often an indicator of what you will get, unfortunately. At least you got a buck though, it could have been much worse. I wonder how many adds off of Craigslist are similiar jokers?
-
google his phone # 509-385-1561
it looks like the guy is selling whitetail, turkey and elk hunts on more than just ebay and is also maybe a brittany spaniel breeder selling dogs.
:dunno:
-
First off, I'm in no way sticking up for the guy, but for just the private land access you can pay TWICE that amount. Now I understand some things were agreed upon, but I don't see how this was a big rip off, myself. $500 for private land access in the rifle season is actually better then the going rate. Plus you got a respectable buck, I wouldn't feel TOO bad. Just my 2 cents.
-
Yeah he may not be your ideal hunting partner, but you got a whitetail buck, a 4x4 no less, and were guided to the spot for a whopping $500. Sounds like you got a pretty damn good deal. You also got to explore a new area, and for a very cheap price, learned some things about what to ask your next guide.
-
another thing i noticed when i looked at one of his elk hunts on ebay was he said he was a consultant not a guide.
WE OFFER A CONSULTING SERVICE FOR ELK HUNTERS, WE SET YOU UP IN A MOTEL AND PROVIDE MAPS OF OUR AREAS THAT ARE BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE WE HAVE OVER 3000 ACRES OF PRIVATE AND OVER 12 SQUARE MILES OF PUBLIC LAND AJACENT TO PRIVATE FARMS, WE HAVE NICE HERDS ON BOTH PROPERTIES. its still a bum deal no the less. sorry to hear it

something to consider:
a. you are wiser now on picking guides, and you have questions you'll ask in the future.
b. he is not wiser, unless you tell him about the things that bothered you. If you communicate to him certain things, he may be able to improve. remember, he has 3k acres available to hunt and he will probably continue to do this for a while. This is an opportunity to help mold him into a great service provider.

Dustin, I like your approach to this. I agree that we as the purchasers should take steps a thru c to ensure we protect others out there.

I went on a guided snow goose trip to Missouri last winter. $135/day for pit blinds (cheap). the guide would meet you at the gas station and guide you out to the 1000 decoy spread with his ecaller, then afterwards you could clean the geese at his farm location and take back just the wing and meat to your hotel, he recommended a particular hotel.
When we get there, you can't clean birds at his location anymore, "feds came down on him".
which doesn't matter too much because the hotel he recommended was so disgusting, we gutted the birds in the room. The windows were broken and taped up with cardboard and duct tape. when you ran a tub the water backfilled and it was gross and grimey. The heater didnt' work so she wheeled in a free standing oil heater. The knobs on the tub were broken off and there was a bolt shoved through so you could still use it.
The TV didnt' work in the first room, so she moved us to this 'better' room, where the tv also did not work (or the heater, tub, window, etc).
Area gets hit by a unexpected blizzard, its -16F out, snow and ice, the hotel he recommended is 30 minutes away in good weather, so when we arrive to the gas station 5 minutes late at most, he is not there because "he doesnt' wait" (there was only 1 other guy in the guided hunt, would he have minded a 10 minute wait????)
the pit blinds are not being used all the sudden, so we are hunting layout blinds, with my 60yr old father in law, who was expecting pits, up on the peak of a hillside in -16F windchilled snow.
we break for lunch. on the way back, our "SUV" rental get stuck less than 1/2 mile from the blind in a new snow drift on the road that wasn't there before. I called the guide over and over and over on his cell. his truck could have easily pulled us out. he ignores his cell while hunting, they get more birds during the 2nd half of that day, then the full 3 days we were there combined.
I hike back, in the snow and wind, almost a mile, to the nearest farm house. the farmer has to charge his turbo diesel to get it running, but gladly pulls us from the miserable snow pile we've become. not wanting to risk getting stuck again, we call it a day and head back to the only open restaurant, a truckstop. I leave the guide one more voicemail telling him our rig is not going to make it back, we need an alternative hunt (the promised pitblind) or a ride or something for the following day.
He gives away the geese i had shot in the morning, including a mature blue i wanted to get mounted.
calls me back that evening and finally says we can hunt the pitblind we paid for.
we get to the pit blind, the guide is a different guide. an awesome dude, I really like him, but he is a sub contractor using the first guides gear... wontcha know it... the pits are filled with snow, and the electronic caller is broken. we spend the last day in the pits, finally, with broken gear. I did get another mature blue snow though, and should have it back from the taxidermist in a week or two.
All in all it was a great trip and I can't wait to go back. I'm trying to get someone else to go with me in Feb or March of 2010, but whenever I tell this story, nobody will go :bash:
-
The $500 was a deposit. The total price was supposed to be $850. After I got there he informed me that I would also have to pay another $50 bucks for tax. So now we are up to $900. I had to pay for my own room at the Apple Tree Inn ($150 for 2 days).
I have "friends" who helped me to learn how to hunt, gut, and process deer. I love passing this information on to other "friends" including the people on here who I probably will never meet. This was a business deal. If I have to pay him to hunt, then he should pay me to show him how to do it. This guy even wanted me to show him how to operate HIS trail camera.
I almost feel sorry for him. I just wish that he was upfront and honest about his abilities and the situation. If he had not done what I told him to do after I got there and assessed the situation, I would not have shot the buck that I did.
I feel lucky to have gotten a buck. The prayers to our Patron Saint Hubert paid off well!
I wish to thank everyone here for their opinions.
Dennis

Seems like you left Ebay feedback too soon. He has 100% feedback. :yike:
-
$900 is starting to get up there. Can you show me a guided deer hunt in washington with a 100% success ratio that cost less?
-
Just because 300Magnum had success doesn't mean that this "guide" has 100% success ratio......... :dunno:
-

I guess I misunderstood what you were saying........ :P
-
I guess I misunderstood what you were saying........ :P
yeah i'm just giving you grief :P I saw that he had 100% feedback (listed above) and perhaps made an inappropriate assumption.
even so. if someone can show me a guide that's less than $900 with 100% of the KNOWN customers showing success (haha) I'd like to see it. Big game guided hunts are pricey.
-
Some salt in 300Magnum's wound, the seller has a listing right now on ebay for a 2010 whitetail hunt and the pictures on the listing look like 300Magnum and his deer.
Looks like He's the poster child for this guy now..
-
Hey Guys,
Just to clear some things up. He told me that I had to give him positive feedback in order for him to get the deposit from paypal. I gave him the feedback the day I paid for the hunt. I am no expert when it comes to ebay, or paypal. He has the system figured out for getting 1 time customers.
My main problem was he didn't know what he was doing, and the fact that he misled, and lied to me.
I am now wiser in this area.
Warmest Regards,
Dennis J. Ortenburg
-
You know there are ways to dispute your feedback on ebay, contact them and see if you can if you want to.
-
He told me that I had to give him positive feedback in order for him to get the deposit from paypal.
Wow, that guy is a big liar....... :o
-
BTW- This guy operates in a similiar fashion to the one magnum300 hunted with. Maybe I can spare someone a crappy time.

Hell, If you don't need a guide license I'll take anyone out for $900.00. I'd even do it for gas and a couple hundred. Sounds like a dream job
-
Never book a guided fishing trip on eBay either. FYI the good fishing guides don't sell trips on EBay. And from the looks of it Good hunting guides don't either.
A particular fishing guide who has been around several years has a rap sheet a mile long of cheating customers out of trips that were paid for through eBay.

i got hosed by the same guy this year. showed up and was a joke so i left didnt see one buck. was supposed to hunt late buck and he changed my dates the raised the price. he guide is fall ruttin spring struttin guide service. he is a crock of poop. didnt give me any trail camera pics either
-
What do I think, it's called hunting, spend your money scouting, do your homework, network with other hunters, and get your own game, fill your own tag. Sometimes you win, sometimes you eat tag soup. It will taste better than what you just ate. Not trying to sound harsh but I would drag myself across the ground and take a stand before I paid out money to hunt deer in WA. Heck PM me next year I will point you in the direction to hunt WT over there. I will say this much kudos for not road hunting
-
well not to be cocky to your reply but i do kill my animals and fill my own tag. killed many animals in this state. a couple that are boone and crockett , got a bull this year that scored 340. do my homework find my own animals. fortunate enough to have the extra money to go on a guided hunt. thought it would better my odds. the only animal i wanted left in washington to kill was a whitetail. i dont have any use for whitetail besides to have one decent buck for the wall.

Here is what I think I am the guy who took him hunting and he has exagerrated the truth a bit he paid to hunt on private property which he did I never guarenteed him a buck because you cant do that unless its a high fence. he left out the part that I picked him up and took him and his scooter hunting in the morning and the afternoon on private property we hunted a farm in the morning and a 2 square mile piece of private land in the afternoon. yes there were other hunters on there and there was some miscommunication with the land owner and myself but they were on the otherside of the property and did not affect his hunt at all HE GOT A BUCK I told him from the start it was a hot dry year over here and even offered to send him back his deposit he wanted to come anyways but again he forgot to post that! I gutted his deer and let him hang it in my garage and when I was skinning it I cut a little high my faul completely I never said I didnt know what I was doing nor did I put the heart and liver in a pile of crap I bagged this for him in a zip lock bag and put his deer in his car for him again forgot to put this in ! he even paid me a additional $100 for skinning and helping him that doesnt sound like a guy who got scammed if you ask me I provide a service for guys who work for a living and like to hunt there are no guarentees in hunting and they all sign a release form and this is included in it. we hunt private land and its cheap so why is he complaining I dont know he shot a decent buck the first day of his hunt and I did most of the work he even tipped me at the end we drank a beer afterwards. I did change the dates due to the 55 degree and windy weather we were having because a good hunter watches the weather and it was suppose top get cold around the time he was to come I was only trying to help increase his odds but HE forgot to tell you all this so think what you guys want I have hunted with quite a bit of diffrent people and thay have been sucessfull it's hunting not killing and all I guarentee is that the hunter will be in on land that has the game he is hunting and that it is private no hunting trip goes perfect but guys like this give the west side hunters a bad name too many expectations if you want to hunt with high expectations then go pay 2000 or 3000 grand to hunt a high fence area were they guarentee you a kill. This is no scam I offer a oppurtunity to harvest a animial no GUARENTEES

Anyone else have a hard time reading that last post? :chuckle:
:yeah:
I tried to read it out loud.
I had to go get some aspirin for the headache.

Sean Siegel,
I did not lie about 1 thing in my post here. You don't know how to gut a deer. You don't know how to skin a deer. You don't know how to fill out a license. You don't even know how to use your own trailcam. You did not hang my deer in your garage. You didn/t have a way to hang it. My girlfriend bought a tarp and it layed on that all night. I shot the first buck I saw because I didn't know if there was any others out there, and neither did you. That's what scouting or trailcams are for. I gave you a $100 tip because I thought that gutting, skinning, and quartering my deer was something I should have done all by myself if I didn't have a broken leg. You 80% gutted my deer. 40% skinned it (some stitching required), cut through the elbows, knees, spine, and held it, while I quartered it. That is why I gave you a tip. I am a more than fair man. I posted this because I wanted to hear others opinions. I just wished that you would have been honest and upfront from the beginning. Did you want to comment about telling me to give you a positive feedback so you could get paid from Paypal? I have gotten e-mails from others who have bought hunts from you and experienced the same BS. I'm not the first.
-
dang what a tough read.... I thought it was just because of the mass amounts of alcohol consumed last night that I had problems. Guess not! :P  :bash:

Holy Smokes! Maybe I should be a consultant. I have my own flashlight byt he way. :chuckle:
Well 300, I think you lucked out. You're also lucky a Gamie didn't check you. WOW
-
"You're also lucky a Gamie didn't check you. WOW"
Why???
-
Improperly notched tag, they don't have a lot of sympathy when it comes to those things.
-
What, what a read. 300, thanks for letting us all know about this guy. I noticed this was Sean's first post. Wonder who let him know he was being talked about on here??? Way to stand your ground 300 and be honest.
As for the other "guide" you guys discussed named Dan, I called him up after seeing his ad on Craiglist. Did not sound like a bad deal. He was even willing to work with me on price. I decided not to go on the hunt, but Dan sounded helpful and like he knew what he was doing.
-

>:( >:( >:( :bash: That was me bamalefty who told him he was being talked about. I was one of the other very dissatisfied customers of Sean's this year. And every detail 300 is saying is the truth. Let me tell you a Little bit of my experience with Sean and his operation he runs. He advertises over 3000 acres of huntable land. Wow what a joke from what he showed me I could hunt when I was there it was more like 200 acres of huntable land unless you are a rabbit that hops around under the brush so thick you would need a a chain saw and clearing crew to get through. I was suppose to hunt late season, then I get a call you better get over hear weather has changed dear will be moving. So me and my buddy take off rush over to the biggest disappointment of my life. Saw one doe on the property Sean claimed we could hunt, I do understand hunting and do understand that hunting is more about the memories than the actual kill. My being upset is at the total missrepresentation of the whole operation by Sean and not that I did not see any deer on his property. At one point Sean took us up pointed at this hill and told us if you walk up there good hunting on the back side and blah blah blah. So up the hill we went walked are rears off which i don't mind either. Get to the top and there was a house on the other side of the hill that was private property that we did not have permission to access so we turned around and hiked all the was back down to sit in a stand for a while that the only way in to the stand was to walk through the middle of the small open area to get to it. You know leaving are sent right where you are hoping the only dear in the county might walk threw. After a couple of days of this excitement Sean advised us that he would call us prior to the late hunt so we could come back and hopefully a few deer may have moved on to the property. Well Knowing that was this week I started placing phone calls to Sean, yep you guessed it never got a call back till Friday night went I sent an email to him requesting my money back. That's when I advised him if he thought I was the only one that had a problem with him and his false advertisement of the operation he was running then he needed to go to this web cite and see what people are saying about him. Yes I too got the run around about the trail cams and the promised pictures that never showed up. I could go on forever but I guess what does it really matter. The point is anybody who would book a hunt or even let this guy pick ticks off his dog for lunch money would be a fool. I love too hunt, I have killed alot of animals in my short life so far that most hunters would drool over. Take at look at my bull on this web cite under 340 peaches ridge bull I got this year. I know how to hunt!!! sometimes I do by landowner tags in other states, sometimes I buy an occasional guided hunt, most the time self hunt on public land. My point is this, when I do pay foe something I expect to get what I paid for. And that does not always mean the kill, it means what I paid for. You no for starters like being able to hunt 3000 acres not something the size of my back yard. I urge no one to ever book a hunt with this bozo and trust me I will be taking legal action to get some, part, or all of my money refunded. You see I used to handle situations like this differently but those anger management classes really worked. :bdid: :bdid: :bash: :bash: Just makes me mad cause I really have very little use for a whitetail just was one animal I have not put on the wall yet. This will more than likely be my last post on this topic as I will need to move on and stop dwelling on it and get ready for next year. In the end it was just a bad experience remember hunting is about the memories you make bad and good this was just a bad one I will chalk up in the memory bank.
