Buddy called after work he shot a bear and it was in a deep hole. So called the wife told her i was going to go help him get it out. I ended up gutting it out for him he was going to slow from the smell. O Ya, it smelled like nothing i have smelled before. Both of our first experience with a bear. WHY SO STINKY???
-
i am no expert but i think its because what they eat. :twocents:
-
picture your dog that needs a bath in a bad way and is kinda stinky...
now take that and consider a bear has never had a bath.
:dunno:
-
Because shampoo isn't grown in the forest and big foot won't share his :chuckle:
-
dunno, but i second that. they effin reek like no other...
-
mmmm I love gutted bear in the morning..
-
I haven't really noticed that they smell that bad, maybe it's because I smell worse? :chuckle:
-
Mine didn't but those antelope sure stunk.
-
What stunk?
The hide, the meat or the guts? Don't cut open the gut bag.
I have only smelled one bear that was nasty...and it was puking nasty. That was on POW and it was eating fish. All the WA bears I have been involved with had no smell or only a slight wet dog smell. Nothing nasty like a rutted bull or worse.
-
I've killed a few around Darrington.... :dunno:
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
I KEED I KEED~!
-
the one we took this fall didnt smell any worse than a ruttin buck or maybe even less than a coyote
-
Oh god. Coyotes just stink. :puke:

Gutpile, You might want to take the fur off before you roast them over a fire. :chuckle:

I don't roast them. I usually dice up the backstraps, add a little garlic, a little doe urine, and mix them with this..........
I thought you knew that.

The guts just STINK! Kind of like rabbits, but worse. We had a family friend that was a bear guide in Ontario, he killed or had a part in the demise of hundreds of bears and never gutted a one. Just skin, quarter, and take out the backstraps, leave the stinky rest for the yotes.
-
Most of the bears I have gutted smelled like wine..or at least fermented berries. Sometimes kinda sweet.
-
I wish I could find any bear even a stinky one. :'( :'( :'( :'( :chuckle:
-
I hear ya.. I have not even seen one since July.

I have killed 10 bears myself and been in on the gutting/field butchering of another 10 or so. I have never noticed bears to smell any worse than anything else. In fact they often smell better. I really do not know what the heck folks are talking about. Rufous.
-
The spring bear I got this year made me gag twice....which is really rare. I have a pretty tough stomach.
I would rather work on a bear instead of a coyote/coon anyday.
-
Come to think of it I have never gutted anything that has even come close to making me gag. I have seen and smelled some pretty rank stuff.
-
Only one bear made me gag, it was a Griz with maggots and old chunks of meat all threw it's fur from rolling on an old Moose carcass.... A roll into the river and some dawn dish washing soap, he was fresh and clean...
-
i have been around of lot of dead animals and bears take the cake. i can't think why some would say they don't stink very much, man i have never gaged over any dead animal :dunno: but bears do have a stink to them.

I would agree 100%.
Some deer, elk, and most yotes smell worse. Rabbits guts are the absolute worst.
-
the worst smell from a bear Ive killed wasnt the guts,It was like a strong body odor, nothing to gag about.Rabbits are bad but duck guts are up there..
-
Maybe they all skipped health class when they were young, and do not know the importance of good hygiene. :chuckle:
-
Maybe its dependent on what they eat. I've only killed 2 bears and from what I remember they actually didnt smell bad at all. Thing is, both bear had been goring on cascara berries and thats kinda what they smelled like so that might have had something to do with it. Deer and elk are far worse smelling in my opinion.
-
I find that if I dont brush my teeth or wash my armpits....most animals smell pretty good.... :P
