those both will put a whoopin on your shoulder if you do not get a gun that fits you like a glove.  I used to sight my uncles 340 in for him every year.  He was to chicken to put more than 2 rounds through it.

The one 340 I shot was in a Weatherby rifle a mark 5 I think. It didn't kick all that bad, and it shot really well. never touched off a 338 ultra... that one might hurt. I don't think you will find weatherby ammo for much under a 100$ a box

i was figuring price per pull would be up there, even with handloads, but ultra ammo isnt exactly 06 shells

I'd get the 338ultra over the Roy. Brass for the RUM is available at cabelas and a lot cheaper then WBY. brass. I've been thinking of getting another 338RUM to load some 300gr/ SMK's, that should be a great long range rock buster. In the one I played with, the only bullet I tryied was the 210 TSX with RL-25. It shot real well.

with the 338 rum 104.0 gr of 4831 puts your velocity at around 3660 fps with a pretty good grouping  (oh thats with 160 gr Barnes X) ....I really dont know much about the 340...some people say that the 338 might give you a little higher velocity...but I dont know if it maters THAT much ....

Mine was a Rem 700 BDL.  If I come across another, I'll grab it and probable have a brake threaded on.

If you want to do it right have a .338 x 300 RUM custom biult. The 300 RUM case is bigger and will help you push those big heavy slugs a bit better. IMO

Have talked to some guys who have done this and been really happy.

The 338-300 RUM has a cool factor and a few extra FPS but IMHO fireforming is a PITA , enough to keep me away from most any cartridge that requires it.

Instresting. will remember that. How do you think it would stack up against Daves 338-378 Wizbang?

The 338-300 RUM and the 338-378 are almost ballistic twins. We're talking about expensive to shoot, very specialized rifles/cartridges that most folks would never use to half potential. Both will push a 250gr game king at 3000FPS pretty easily.

Either or? Both great. I had a 338 RUM, 700 LSS. Loaded 215 GK's, 225 NP's, shot really good. Had a Vias brake installed, dumped it. Biggest waste of money I've spent on a rifle. Like to get another for serious bull and bear killin.. Let us know what you get. Later

I was having a hard time choosing between those two calibers myself this past year I took the middle ground and bought a 8mm Rem Mag!

If you are gonna reload, look at the .338-.375.  I have heard good things about it.

Since they are pretty much ballistic twins, why don't you just pick the rifle and let that determine  the caliber. If you like Weatherby rifles get the 340, if you like Remingtons get the 338 Ultra. Now if you're going to have one custom built my whole selection process is a waste and you're right back at square one. :chuckle:  For the record, I'd go with the Ultra Mag for the better availablity and price of brass and ammo.
