Title: first time at fir island
Post by: wrangler on November 18, 2009, 07:59:16 PM
so i'll be headin up there tomorrow for first time. i normally do all my waterfowling on the eastside, being as i family and friends and tons of areas to hunt, alone... anyhow, i got tomorrow off on short notice so im gonna head up north. maybe i wont end up at fir but thats the plan for now i guess... any general info i should know about? other than don't get shot and bring some patience? i REALLY hate this (what im expecting) type of hunting but im flat outa ideas for the west side and i need to kill some birds and don't have time tomorrow to drive to the basin. if anyones gonna be up there or has a better idea pm me! thanks!

I'd head up to Welts instead since its during the week and you won't need a boat.  Look at it on google map and get some ideas of where the ponds are and pick one close to the west edge by the water.  I can give you a few ideas of which holes to hit.... Pm coming at ya   If I was off work I'd meet up with you and do some hunting.

Depends on what Island you are talking about Fir Island itself or the hunting unit Island on the South Fork of Fir Island.  Water is high and moving fast.  When the stumps slam into the boat at O'dark thirty everyone holds on for dear life.

Anywhere on the Skagit river is not a good place to be... not only the the stumps logs and other fiberous materials you can see. There are many waterlogged ones you dont see to hit also :bash:

I used to hunt the skagit all the time. I did really good there. It is a challenge to deal with the dead heads and the tide change though. I love going over there and hunting every now and again it just reminds me how easy i have it over here.
