I've got a newer(8-10yrs old) Winchester mod. 70 Black Shadow in 30-06. This is the most rust prone gun I think I have ever seen. From day one, the amount of humidity in a fart would make this thing rust up. :bash: It's mostly on the outside of the barrel, and a couple spots in the chamber area. The gun is not being neglected, it's cleaned after every use, given a light coat of gun oil and cleaned before use if it's sat for a while. I've even cleaned it the night before a hunt and after a day walking around in GMU 371 (Very dry) I get back to the truck and I can see rust on my hands and spots starting to show on the barrel. With my pre 64 .308 I slipped crossing a creek and we both went under water, but I just shook it off and no problems. If it's raining at hunting camp it has to damn near be given an oil bath or it looks like I pulled out of the ocean.
Is this common or did I get a POS gun. :dunno:

My now 10 year old walmart version Win Mod 70 300 win mag - blue with blk stock = same damn thing. I love it but she is a rusty lil hooker!
I let it get a light rain the 2nd year had it... cleaned pretty well but mostly an outside wipe and like 2 weeks later I messed up on one of the top 5-6 biggest WT deer Ive ever seen. The barrel inside had surface rust and kinda stuck the shell and the spring in the bolt froze so it wouldnt grab it enough to remove it...hence no follow up shot when was needed.
Now, I make sure to clean the hell out of her every time.
PS- I still love the gun and refuse to replace it!

Sounds like a bad deal, I would talk to the maker...sounds like a POS.

hum i have a model 70 also in .270 about 35 to 40 years old. not quite a pre 64 but close, and it does the same thing. been thinking about painting it to stop it from doing that anymore. I know exactly what your saying when you practically over oil it and it still rusts........ :bash:

Some of the newer base guns are not as well blued on newer versions. Older guns or new with better blueing will do this after the first time. Many newer guns with a matte finish, are not much more then a blued gun that was bead blasted. The military matte finish is Parkerizing, and it is an actual coating that absorbs oil as the protectant. Bottom line is it saves money to cut corners, and all manufacturers do it on their lower cost guns. Manufacturer will not warranty this or do anything to correct it. You could have it re-blued and it would help. I have Browning A-Bold Medallion that has a bore that fouls like nothing else I have ever seen. My guess is that it got some rust going on to cause the problem. The outside blueing is great and it shoots awesome, but nasty wet White T ail hunting I have no doubt caused it. That is why I love SS and won't hunt with anything else if I have an option.

take a look into coating it with cera-kote or dura coat. brownells has some you can apply at home or there are many guys doing cera-kote.

I've been hunting with my Ruger 77 since 1978, rain, snow, sleet or sunshine. I've always dried it off with paper towels and wiped it down carefully with a soft flannel rag rubbed full of Rig Gun Grease at the end of each day. I've had no rusting problems whatsoever, even though there are a few spots where the bluing has worn off from wear.

The baked on coating from Brownells is awesome. The only thing you need to do is remove the scope, bolt, and trigger. Then find an oven large enough. A local club or charity usually has one large enough. Just have to convince then to let you use it.

There are a couple of product you should try. Birchwood-Casey makes a inexpensive rust prevention product. They make it in a aerosol spray can and in a "hand wipe" type individual package. Another great product is Corosion-X. You need to apply every once and awhile but it sure helps with my Model 70.

I have a Super Shadow in .300WSM for a truck/beater/loaner gun. I haven't had any problems with the finish,even during some serious snow/rain storms.

I've got a newer Mod.70 Coyote Lite in a .325 WSM and was having the same problems. I cured mine from rusting by leaning it up in a corner with a can of rem oil sitting next to it. Everytime I walked by it I would coat it, Heavily, then just let it absorb what it could. A few weeks of this seemed to work just fine. I think towards the tail end of Winchester's New Haven existince they were a little cheap or ineffective with their "bluing" process. If you don't want to do that and want a guarenteed rust free rifle I would look into Moly Coating.
