I was one of the 100 people drawn for the late archery antlerless or 3pt or better hunt. In 388. Im going with family that hunted that area years ago. Im not looking for a honey hole but am I going to see deer? Just curious if anyone has hunted late archery there in the past.

I might be able to help you out a little. I hunt the early season every year down there i have'nt hunted the late season since they changed that to a eastern unit and there is no late elk anymore. but i know the area pretty well and will share some info.

You will definetly see deer. In the last couple weeks scouting Elk I'v seen 7 or 8 shooter bucks and countless does. Not any Elk but plenty of deer. Been getting light dustings of snow and each trip out have seen fresh sign. If you have anterless permit it should be no problem taging out. Good Luck

Thanks for the feed back. I shoot traditional gear so a doe would be just fine. Looking forward to seeing alot of deer.
-
you should be fine with a doe tag the deer are a bit crazy due to the cat population have been seein lots of does and a few bucks you sould not have to eat tag soup, and big j must be talking about rifle elk because there is still a late archery elk hunt i plan on doing it every year if i don't get a elk early but i did so no late hunt for me.

If you are talking about a late archery elk hunt in GMU 388, you must have a different game pamphlet then the rest of us in this state. Nope I'm wrong keep forgetting that 388 went to east side elk, I geuss you just get used to the way things used to be especially when you only pay attention to westside archery elk, because that's where you normally hunt.
-
when it was 588 there was a late hunt but now it is 388 and eastern so my western tag is no good over there. i primarily hunt elk down there and the land that i hunt is on the western side of the road 578 with no late archery. I talked to my buddy down there on monday he said he has been seeing quite a few deer around and some decent bucks.

arguments are so much easyier when you put all the facts on the tables :) I think this one has a proven winner

Original post asks about seeing deer, carpsniperg2 is quoting elk seasons. :jacked:

It's funny how some one can make a mistake go back and admit the mistake, but some people still feel the need to be a :sas:, 388(588 of old) was a westside elk unit of old, and the season was removed from the late archery available hunt status before it became an eastside mule deer classification, that's why most of us are used to it being closed, which in return now it also became an eastside elk now I see, and a little further review shows that yes it is open for late elk, which when you hunt westside elk and are sucessful, no need to worry about late seasons, and yes we are :beatdeadhorse: now! :twocents:

glad you guys know now it helps when i live right there also. and jphelps the only reason i was talking elk because in bigj's early post he said there was no longer a late season so i just wanted to help people out and let them know there is still a late season and i know what i am talking about most of the time
-
I was just ment no late season for me because I buy western tag and hunt 578 primarily and used to hunt 588 when i did'nt tag out in the early season. sorry for the confusion

We used to hunt there alot for late deer. Its a high migration unit where we hunt. Not much snow = not much deer.We used to camp next to a old timer that has hunted it for 26 years. Back when it was open till dec.31 he said it was nothing to see a 1000 deer migrate thru after a good snow. I was going to go this weekend, but with no snow forcasted im sticking closer to home.

Yeah thats true not very many deer left around here and no snow coming for the migration, yeah you better stay around home. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Big cat problem over there. Deer are skiddish and few compared to a few years back. Snow really livens things up a bit.

Thank you all for the info. It was a fun hunt we saw 50 plus deer a day a few nice bucks but i was not able to take a deer. I had a few close calls but with traditional gear I have a 30 yard max shot. Next year I will have a tree stand thats the only way to go. Those deer are very hard to stalk. Over all great area I will be back.
