Title: Spring turkey hunt..
Post by: vanhornhunter on January 07, 2008, 04:46:15 PM
I've never been before and I really want to go get one or two this spring.I going to look at a area sunday near davenport. If everything works out I may have great little place to hunt.
So if theres anybody out there who wants to show a new guy how to do it I sure it'll be a good time.Oh and I'm playing on buying some of those new gobbler guillotine broadheads for my bow!

I thought the "Guillotine Broadheads" were illegal in the state of Washington?

never heard that before michelle...maybe... :dunno:
i talked to a fed gamey over in the little p.o. refuge who's son was using them.
the question i have is how do you plan on practicing with them? i've been curious how this works.
i'd love to shoot one with my bow, but it'll be a body shot with a broadhead, at least for starters.

i assume at this point that until i go elk hunting in the rut, this will be one of my favorite kinds of hunting. do whatever you can do to get out there and try it. if no one wants to go with you, go by yourself. watch videos, listen to tapes, surf the numerous turkey hunting forums. this is pretty much what i did the first year we hunted.  you're bound to learn enough to do some damage. it's a great time and the people that don't think so haven't had a biglongbeard gobbling their head off at 15 yards in full strut. best advice is to be safe...turkey hunting can be dangerous if not taken seriously.
an elk hunt in the rut is a turkey hunt on steroids.

It is a fixed broadhead so I would think they would be legal.

Legal or not, I have had many people tell me they are not what the TV makes them out to be. Tough to practice with, easily affected by the wind, have to shoot a longer arrow so you don't whack your sight, and much more I guess. A regular broadhead through the boiler should do the trick just fine.

The comercial is pretty sweet though, i'll give them that. Heads were rolling.

Does anyone have a picture of one?  I saw them being used when I was in georgia but have never seen them up close.  I know I heard somewhere that they were illegal to hunt with in washington.  Just can't remember where I heard it.

I rthink there's huge odds for a total miss or wounding. how long does a turkey hold it's head still enough for a shot? i guess it works, but not for me.
the video, whichever one you watch is cool as hell though.

Personaly I think it kinda looks retarded.  Than again I have never shot one.  Just doesn't look like it would be fun to try and shoot.

Funny why they would make that illegal.  If it thwacked you int he head, it would obviously kill you, and also, you'd think it would be more sporting thana shotgun  I've put an arrow through the boiler room, that works.  I would love to try to pheasant hunt with one of those sometime.  Think buying shotgun shelss is expensive though.....

Heres a tip. Contact Double Bull Blinds by their website and request a catalog. They will send you one for free, plus a 3 DVD set of hunting out of their blinds. They have a ton of different critters killed and many turkeys lose their heads to the guillotine.

Ya miss one time, I can almost guarantee your gonna be out the ten bucks each one of those things cost. They seem durable, but I cant see one staying very true after a miss and hitting the ground. I dont know, maybe they are super durable, I was all hot to get some last year, but getting one with a bow is challenging enough let alone trying to saw ones head off. BTW, I cant wait til this spring to go slay a couple fired up Toms!! Wastickslinger, sharpen up your broadheads, were gonna put Butterball out of business this year ;) :chuckle:

Why the hell do i need to sharpen by broad heads? They will just get dull when they go flying into the dirt when I miss again. I'm putting that stupid Matthews away and taking the Martin, it never failed me.  :chuckle:

Stupid turkeys. Good think I had the trusty 12 guage.

Sniper-I am not letting you get two easy ones this year. Better starting practicing your calling now.

Also- I hope we run into one of those 150 pound yoters this year within range.  ;)

No kidding. Had a yote try to snack on my box call last year. I have been looking for a 223/12 or similar ever since... Dont think they make that in a camo/youth version do they?

No time. He busted me in close, and ran out maybe 50 yards, stopped and barked his ass off at me. I kept him at 50yds by yelping like crazy each time he turned to go. Barky the song dog...

Slinger, the Washington History Museum isnt going to appreciate it if you ask them for your Martin back after you already donated it. Especially after they put it in that awesome display of those guys hunting Mastadons.
