Hey all, well I went out after Thanksgiving dinner for a couple hours and managed to get a shot on a nice little buck, a 30 yard shot but it hit just a little far back then I would have liked but a definate lung shot. Well I found my arrow covered in blood and a few spots of blood witch led in to some nasty nasty thick black berry and devils clubs that were 6 ft tall, very very thick. I looked as hard as I could until a little after dark and said that I would get back at it at first light tomarrow. I hate sitting here knowing my deer is out there dead. My question is how long can I wait before the meat starts to spoil? I shot it right about 3:00 this afternoon. If I find it at first light that will be 16 hours. This kills me, I hate this part of bow hunting. If I don't find this deer I will still notch my tag on it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks guys.

If you are sure you hit lungs call some friends and grab some lights and go find your deer.

It is near 50 degrees over here, go after it tonight or some of it will probably spoil. If it was dipping around freezing it would be "okay" to leave it but I think that it is a tad too warm if you want the meat. I wouldn't leave an animal overnight unless I absolutely had to. Get some lights and friends and find it.

:yeah: especially if you think there is any possibility of a partial gut shot (you said you hit a little farther back) that could spoil the whole thing. if i was closer id offer to help you look tonight. go get him and get him gutted

That's very nice of you to offer him help. Personally, I would look. Grab some flashlights and something to cut up the bushes. If you gut shot it at all, I have heard they try to get to water..but, not a for sure thing. If you can find an back way and circle around the nasty stuff, you may find him on the edges..??? I wouldn't give up!! Good luck:)

I have found deer after dark using a colman propane lantern, the blood appears as black spots on the ground, I actually prefer to look after dark with a lantern because your focus is much narrower and you can concentrate better at least that is what I have found, works good !!!
Get after it tonight or you'll have chewed (coyotes) up partially spoiled meat and you'll feel even worse if that happens !!!

Lets go find er!!!!!! Should be fine till first light but way funner to track in the dar!!! Plus you dont over look stuff in the dark!!!

It's raining pretty hard here. I'd be worried about the blood trail being washed away with the rain. I'd get some help and get out there as soon as possible. Take a machete or two for that devil's club and blackberries. :o
Looking forward to seeing a picture, so don't forget a camera! And get a pic of where you find him. ;)

Deer hide and fat should preserve some of the animal's core heat. Looks like the overnight temperature at Chehalis will dip below 40F (maximum cold storage temperature) for a few hours Friday morning. Probably should have stayed there. Hope it turns out.

I don't think he'll even be back. Seen lots of these posts and they never seem to re appear. Hope he does find it but I'm skeptical he'll even show back up again for a while.

hear ya gutpile some times i think its enviros :tree1: seeing what we are going to say. i think they expect us to say o well go get another. i hope if that is the case, the panty waste people they are realize that we respect the animals we hunt and arn't just some a hole that don't care. sorry for my rant >:(

He has been a member for longer than a year, he will be back. Looking at his posts he is young and fairly new to hunting so don't get on him too bad.

Hey guys, just want to thank those who offered to help me look, me and 3 others were out till 1:00 this afternoon and had no luck. We think the deer was not hit as well as I thaught and I think it ran down to the creek bottom and who knows were after that. I know this sucks, so you don't need to remind me. I notched my deer tag, and I guess I'll try to fill my elk tag now. This is the first time this has ever happened to me and just really really bumms to know that there's a woonded deer out there suffering, I'm hopeing it's dead. Thanks again guys for your concern and willingness to help. Mike.

your right huntnphool i was not implying what i said to him i was just sayin the people who are enviros that sneak on hear just to stir the pot, i hope he finds it it tough for anyone to lose a animal that they know they mortialy wounded.

Sorry you weren't able to find it..that stinks. As much as we want it all to be perfect and every shot placed to kill, all anyone can do is their best. I was really amazed at all the stories about animals being harvested and then later finding arrows in them for a long time!
Good luck on your Elk hunt and either way you know that deer will go back to nature.

Were you able to find any blood, tracks, or anything? It didn't sound like you pushed it after you shot it. Should have found something.

Ya I found my arrow with blood on it and I found were he layed down and bled out for a few minutes. It was porring rain so any blood was gone in a few minutes.

I think the meat will be spoilede by now. You did notch your tag so if you get free time go up there and look some more. Maybe you will find it and get the antlers at least.
Sorry but hold your head up, you did the honerable thing by going back and looking hard.

Keep at it I had this happen to me before and when the buck hit the creek bottom he backtracked on me. I looked for 5 days and I was walking 20 ft by him all the time. By the 5Th day I saw fur on the trail that wasn't there the day before and he was in the thickest crap wedged under two blow down tree's. I didn't get the meat but I got the horns. I like your style on notching the tag though I have done the same in the past and another time I vowed to do it but ended up finding the buck and didn't have to but it is very Commendable of you. :)
