Title: Opinions on Compound Choices... Long Versus Short!!
Post by: Hornseeker on December 03, 2009, 05:30:00 PM
OK, I have been offered a "screaming" deal on a Hoyt Alphamx 35....like new... setup ready to hunt...

I have also been offered a screaming deal on a Hoyt Protec 3000... this is a 42 or 43ish length target bow that folks generally shoot fingers with.

I'm well versed at shooting fingers, shot compound fingers for 5 years and have now shot trad with fingers for about 5 years... I have NOT any experience with shorter bows and releases...

What are the pros and cons!!!??? Remember...even the 44 inch wheel bows are short for me cause I am shooting a 64" longbow!!! ;)

If your going to shoot release go with the AM35...beter bow it aims as good if not beter than the Protec does.
faster to smother on the shot to....just a beter bow
if you shot fingers go with the Protec....just for the ATA

I know its possible to be extremely accurate shooting fingers, but I htink its "easier" to be accurate with a release...

So... expanding this topic a  bit...

What kind of trajectory would something like the AM35 have? I know there are many variables... but I draw about 27 1/2, 70# bow... say I was shooting 450 grains... How many pins does a guy need to shoot to 60 yards?

Back when I shot my PSE Mach 6, I had a sight with 3 pins... just adjusted my hold, but I guess with more pins and a range finder, I wouldn't have to make many mental adjustments???

Thanks,
Ernie

I would say you will shoot about 275-280 fps with that set up
as for pins its up to you
you can do 20-30-40-50-60
or 20-40-60

xXx...

Are you set up to build trad strings? I am actually not familiar with compound strings, but I assume they are endless...served at each loop?

I need to get a source of strings for my LB's and I'm tired of building them!!!
62-66" AMO...

my am32 at 70# and 30" shoots 282fps with a +/- a little bit 450 grain arrow. my top 3 pins are stacked as tight as i can get them 20-30-40. my top pin is close enough to spot on at 10 yards for hunting scenarios.
