Title: 35 Whelen or 358 Winchester?
Post by: ing on December 04, 2009, 06:52:11 AM
What are your opinions between the 35 Whelen or 358 Winchester?  Any of you guys own and or hunt with either of these cartridges?  If so how did they perform?

nearly the same, 100-200fps difference, all depends if you want a long action or short.  i shoot rem 721 in 35 whelen.

I have had both, either is good choice or like addicted posted earlier both. my 35 is ackley improved, like 'em both. when you get yours, shoot 'em at longer ranges for practice/education. they'll shoot farther than old-time gunwriters gave 'em credit for.

Long or short action..? OK, has bearing if you're buying or building a bolt gun.

But, if you're intent on an iron sighted Piggie, Bear or Elk lever gun, then hands down the 358win would be the way to go. Be warned though, that there are older lever guns not up to the pressure possibilities of what a handloader can do with the 358win.

If you're not a hand loader, neither.  Stick with something you can buy off many store shelves.

If you're looking to build a scoped, longer range bolt gun, then the 35 Whelen gives a little better trajectory because of slightly higher velocities.

Thanks guys. Long or short action is'nt a concern of mine. Not even sure if I want a bolt action.  Remington is chambering their 750 semi-auto in 35 Whelen. That sounds like it would be a fun lil brush buster. As for bolt guns Remington currently chambers their CDL in 35 Whelen and Ruger has both in the Hawkeye although I think they dropped the Whelen this year.

as for how they performed, I do handload but so far on game have only used factory fodder, silvertips in the WIN and core-lokts in the Whelen. both dropped every animal I shot right there, varying ranges from 35 yards to the farthest at 175 yards. not always complete penetration but bullets always held together until handled afterwards, core came out of cup while cleaning. no fragmentation even with cup & core bullets, old saying, "you could eat right up to the bullet hole." no excessive bloodshot meat. I now load with premium bullets, either Barnes or Nosler but haven't shot them at game yet.

I think the 358 in a short lite bolt gun like a rem. m 7 would be the cats meow for hunting the dark timber

I've had 2 Whelens, one a 1917 enfield I had done up by Carl Lindholhm out in Oakville when I was 19 or 20. 22'' pac-nor snout, shot good, couldn't stand the action. The other was a 700 bdl, great gun, wish I still had it. Then I've had 3 358's. A mint 99 with the counter, custom 88, and a blr. All 3 shot great. The Whelens were fed 225 Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, the 358's 225 Sierra Game Kings, handloads. Not a big difference in killin power,I've killed bucks, bulls and bear with both, but I prefer the 358. Its a lot of muscle in a short, handy, light killin machine. My next 358 will be a 660, 20'' snout, wearing a twin mcmillan like my 660 243. Later

i'd really like to get my hands on a 358 rifle for hunting around here.  might have to take a look at ruger's offering.  just wish i could get the stainless version with a wood stock.

Yes it will!! And I'll post some pics for ya. Best thing about the 358, it really doesn't fit into the "brush" gun catagory, though it works well, but it'll hammer *censored* out to 300-350 yards easy enough.. It really is underatted. IMO. Later

Oh, I have a SPS LA remmy stock for ya. Shoot me a pm.

I like the '51 case for just about everything.
Efficient and extremely accurate.
Either way=win
