Post by: kenzmad on December 05, 2009, 08:09:50 PM
went to our road into stella this morning and the gates are locked. the area we wanted to hunt is too far to walk in so we have moved to the coweeman 550 area. anybody have any info on this area? we are looking at hunting the north and northeast side of the unit. are we on the right track? trying to get away from the crowd but it is hard to do with all the roads in here. any tips and we would be happy.

Don't know the area, but WDFW and Google maps is how I start my research on new areas.

I have looked at every site I can and I know that this is the site for helpful info. have hunted coweeman before with no success but I am sitting in a motel room in castle rock with my elk plans shattered and am now searching for a backup

Well, this is what I would do then.

1. Go to Wal-mart/Target and buy a $100 mountain bike
2. Lighten up your backpack to bare essentials
3. Go to that gate and park
4. Put on your backpack and ride in 15 minutes before shooting time
5. Good Luck

the locked gate may be a blessing in disguise. I would not let the locked gate shatter my elk hunting dreams. good luck and let us know how it works out for you

Yep. You want to get away from all the roadhunters, right? Locked gates are the best places for that. Just walk.

walking the 4 - 5 miles is not an option as my hunting partner and his son are unable to walk that far. did not mention that we are hunting with a front stuffer. thanks for you help

Looks like it started to snow in Castle Rock just now, so I would forget the bike.  Dress warm, carry a nice lunch and walk.  Should find elk sooner than you think.

I live on the Tower Road, just off the Spirit Lake highway on the Toutle River and it's small dry flakes so it should be great hunting in the morning.

I used to muzzy hunt the coweeman. I cant remember the road# but i went in rose valley or head qtrs rd and went as far back close to the boundry of the toutle you can get.I think i was about 2 miles from the toutle and i was on the leftside of the main rd going in.  Hope that helps

Bummer that the gates are locked.  I called Sierra Pacific to see why the gates are locked and they explained it was due to vandalism.  It isn't keeping out the 4-wheelers though.  My wife and I walked in 5 miles into the Ryderwood for late archery and there were 4-wheelers everywhere.  The Coweeman is a good unit, you don't have to go way back into the unit to find elk, just go where other hunters won't, like steep, nasty holes that elk like to hide.  Good luck.

I hunted 3 or so miles into the stella unit this year for early muzzleloader, which gets you pretty close to the middle.  The gates were closed, and it worked out great.  I took my bike and mainly pushed it in up hill.  Made for an easy ride out since it is down hill to the gates from pretty much anywhere.

As for coweeman, there are elk everywhere.

Does not help this year, but someone mentioned mountain bikes.  I always strongly suggest good mountain bikes in the hunting arsenal.  We hunt elk down out of cathalamet and those MT bikes are great!  We usually hunt 14 miles of road system a day with em (unless we get into a herd sooner) with our bows.  You would be supprised how good the elk hunting can be behind locked gates.

For this year, good luck I hope your able to adjust your hunting trip to bring success.  but for next year get that MT bike.

The 4 wheeler thing is frustrating, I talked to the sierra guys about that.  If you can get the ORV # off of the 4 wheeler they can track down the owner and ticket them.  I know it is hard to get this number if they are moving but if you see one parked just jot down the number and let Sierra's security guy know or call the office in Centralia and they will definitely act on it and be very appreciative for the info.

Good luck with that, I doubt 95% of the lazy *censored*s ever get off their quads to do much more then take a piss. :twocents:
Sure wish I could find 1 parked (behind locked gate)  :chuckle:

Good luck finding an area away from people in the coweeman. You would be better off behind that gate in stella. I wish they would close the gates in the coweeman.

Just got home from a day in the Coweeman.  Came in from the south.  Found one gated road, which we hiked out.  Was trying to find access to a clearcut we spotted elk in more than a mile off.  Finally figured out they were 1/4 mile in on a posted private road.  We did find some areas worth hiking but nothing turned up.

They have to catch them. I could write down someones # and say they were riding on their property. Do you really think it would hold up in court

Nice try though, Sierra wants everyone to be scared....I do agree the 4 wheelers need to go though. But use my KLR 650 for hunting mostly. Being a multi purpose bike they dont tear things up. And will ride behind any gate I can get around. I dont think they are willing to do 75mph down them roads trying to catch me

Either way is trespassing when these areas are closed to motor vehicles. If I see you, I will take a picture of you and make sure that you can be identified along with the background to prove where you are. I will also do my best to make sure that you are convicted of criminal trespass.

OK, we are back in the motel from our coweeman hunt. 8am 1 cow and 2 legal bulls showed up on the road we were walking. 159 yards away with no shot available. could not close the distance to my comfort zone of 100 yards. will be back in the morn to try again. thanks to all who have given their advice.

Wont happen, I carry everthing I need to fix anything on the bike. And with a 250 mile range on the gas tank. I dont use the bike all the time. and try to stay out of Seirra property. I have been caught. but show them my muffler stamp saying US forest service aproved muffler. Show them my shovel and fire extinguisher. My bike is Camoclad and has a gunrack on the back. Not #'s. Plain to see im hunting and not there to rip up the roads. They just say I cant be riding in to hunt and have to leave

Dirtbag, when you pull up to the gate and see the sign, what part of "NO MOTOR VEHICLES" confuses you? don't you feel even a little bad when you motor past the guys on bikes and horses that are doing it the right way?

Dirtbag, I am guessing that you are on sierra land on their Hamilton tree farm near Mt. Vernon.  Not sure what their policies are there but I am talking about their Ryderwood tree farm in SW Washington and they definitely will not just ask you to leave if you are caught riding behind a gate in an area closed to motorized vehicles.  I like others on this thread will do whatever I can to ensure those riding in walk in only areas are caught and convicted of criminal trespass.

Opening day 1997, after busting my arse for an hour before dawn to get hiked in past the gate and getting to the draw I wanted to glass when daylight just broke, I hear this mosquito sound.  Louder, louder, when finally he comes around the ridge on an old-school Honda 50, followed by a second.  I was pissed, man.  PISSED.  I was set up to glass, they went right below me, never knew I was there.  Hit the trail at the bottom of the draw and dissappeared up the hill, blowing every damn deer out of that draw.
Found their camp that night, and after stewing all day about that, I let them have it.  Lots of jawing going on, ended with one guy motioned like he was gonna grab his gun, and my buddy saying it ain't worth it and I left saying that "Karma is a BITCH!"
I won't say what "Karma" did, but if one of you dumb suns-a-bitches that were on those Hondas are reading this, you know who you are, and you know what "Karma" did, and you got what you deserved.  Boundary Mountain, 1997.  And "Karma" would do it again, too.  In fact, "Karma" is a downright nasty *censored* about that kind of stuff, and "Karma" is sure going to be looking for a camo'd out 2008-and-up Kawasaki KLR.

These guys have no respect, are just out for #1, to hell with everybody else.  I say, to hell with them.  I would be all about SSS here, but the bike is too big... but, hey, *censored*Bag is bringing his own shovel, so...
