Title: Remington 552 Speedmaster - Anyone have an opinion on these?
Post by: ADAMS on December 05, 2009, 11:47:34 PM
Time for a new .22 auto.  I have narrowed it down to the Marlin 60 and the Remington 552.  I know the Remington is quite a bit more expensive.  Is it worth it?

I'm interested in hearing about accuracy and reliability (the ability to keep on keeping on with less than first rate ammo and without periodic cleaning).

I had a Ruger 10/22 and I'm just not interested in getting another.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

i had one that my grandfather bought me for my 13th birthday used, it was a great gun very accurate, and reliable, unfortunately it was stolen from me 4 yrs ago, killed a lot of small critters with it in the time i had it though

For the cost of the 552 look at the Thompson R55. One of the nicest built semi autos made. http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/rimfireRifles.php For about $650 you can get a magnum research, they are suhweeet.

No experience whatsoever with the 552 but I really like the 597, very good guns for the money, accurate too. I have a 60 and the only issue I have with it is the stock is made for children. I do have that funny feeling in my gut that the 552 is a lot better built than the 60, I said built, I did not say anything about accuracy or reliability.

The 60, with the 10/22 being second, is probably the best low cost 22 semi auto ever built. Cheap, reliable, accurate. They have made over 11,000,000 of them, mine has never failed me. Remington 552 also has a good following with a lot of happy customers, according to the searches I just did at RFC.

I have not ever owned one but years ago did have the opportunity to shoot 2 diffrent ones extensively. They are very accurate and very well built, I don't recall either one I shot having any reliability issue's. I would defiantly buy one if interested in a tube fed semi.

Thanks all.  I have generally heard very good things about them.

NWHydroprint, I actually just sold (yesterday) a nib Colt / Umarex M4 OPS ... at a big loss.  :'(

I just love the Marlin microgroove barrels for accuracy, and cost.  My Marlin semiauto (model 60?) get dirty quite quickly is the only problem I have had.  I have several Remington 513T's that are topnotch (as accurate as non-tricked out Anschutz's), surplused out from High School Rifle Team.
