Title: fixing a mount
Post by: littlebuf on December 06, 2009, 05:47:31 PM: here's a question for you taxi's. i have a deer mount that Ive never been happy with, it just doesn't look good, and its to bad cuz it was a beautiful deer. can it be redone? and by that i mean with the same cape. could be a dumb question but I'm not a taxi so i don't know.

Probably not... I have taken mounts where the customer wants a different set of antlers on it and changed them out and I have also done a repair in a broken skull plate when a cat jumped on a mount and it fell off the wall. On each of those occasions it took a significant amount of time to rehydrate the cape in order to effect the repairs without damageing the cape significantly.
I doubt you would be able to salvage anything other than the eyes especially if it's been mounted for a while and it sounds like that's the case.
My suggestion is to remount after you have shot a deer of comparable size and quality of cape your looking for. Capes can be expensive if you need to buy one so if you can provide your taxidermist with a good cape your not going to break the bank on it.

Post by: bucklucky on December 06, 2009, 06:25:00 PM: Thats a negatory Trevor, unless you would rather me use the cape off your buck this year and re-mount that other buck you want fixed :chuckle: I have gotten full capes off of already mounted heads before just dinking around and re-hyydrated them up. One big problem is that the cape will have alot of memmory that will not come out of the cape, so re-mounting is about impossible.

Post by: bucklucky on December 06, 2009, 06:51:13 PM: Ya , there are so many variables that go into that kind of stuff. Tanning is a big one. Hell , a blacktail cape is only around 125.00 ;)
