Alright, we saw the longest shots. How bout the shortest shots. DEER RIFLE.
The bow guys pride themselves on getting close but lets see how close the rifle guys have gotten before pulling the trigger.
Mine was about 20 yards with a .223 topped with a 6-24 power scope :chuckle:

.
Let me break it down for you native westerners.... 8pt = 4 x 4,,,,,or 3 x 3 with browtines/eyeguards.
so thats how it works. i just thought the east coaster's couldnt count lol.
-
Shot a blackie spike at about 12 feet once. Scared the both of us, before the shot that is...
-
I assume a finish shot doesn't count? The last buck I shot was almost point blank, but he was wounded and charged, he also wasn't where I was looking for him :chuckle:
-
I shot my biggest "true" blacktail at less than 15 feet. I tracked it through some nasty brush and found him bedded down with his head to the ground. It all happened in an instance, he stood up and I shot him from the hip with my old 30-30. He went straight back down in his bed. He was well over 200 pounds and only a 2x3 but really wide and heavy. I also shot a blacktail at around 10 yards with my 12 gauge side by side. I belly crawled up to him and from over 100 yards away.
-
I shot my opening day sage brush muley last year at about 15yds with my .270. I've also shot a blacktail with a slug from a shotgun at under 10yds.
-
A few years ago I bought a .300 win mag and topped it with a 3-9x50 LR vari X-III scope. I practiced shots out to 400 yards and was comfertable with shots at that distance and was ready for a shot at that distance(open country snake river country). That year I shot a whitetail buck at 30 yards. I was kinda bummed actually. I wanted to see how well I could operate my new toy. But its always nice to get shots at close range. It takes a lot to screw up a close distance shot compared to a long range shot.
-
I shot a nice, big 4x4 whitetail at about 18 yards......thats what he gets for sneaking up on me from behind. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
shot a spike blacktail at 10ft. didn't realize he was there until i saw his face looking at me and scared the sh*t out of me.
-
Both with pistol and rifle, I've taken Blacktail 2 & 3pts at less than five yds.

I was on a ridge and heard a shot from farther down the ridge. It was open grass hay fields all around. I waited on the ridge to see if anything would come running up since I was in the getaway path. Sure enough, here comes this three point buck running as fast as he could. I just stood there and waited. As he ran past me at about 3 or 4 feet, I let him have it with a shot from the hip. He had one missing front leg from the knee down. That must have been from the shots I had just heard. He didn't even run like he was missing anything.
-
My first blacktail was a little fork horn at about 4-5 yds with a 7mm mag. :yike: He was supposed to come out on the OTHER side of the clearing. LOT of damage to the front shoulders.
-
:)shortest, 7 feet. Many under 15 yards. Black tails. creepin thru the woods in rain storms and wind, I like within 100 yards of the edge of cuts.

less than 20

My best buck at 20 yards with a 30-30

I shot a small blacktail buck with a .270 at about 10 or 15 feet. I had jumped it with a couple of does on this steep hillside and it ran straight away from me in this doghair timber. Instead of trying to follow it, I ran straight up the hill and the deer hooked around and tried to circle around me. I timed it perfectly and it was walking right at me about 15 - 20 minutes later (I have no idea why it didn't see me) and I just put the scope on the bottom of the white throat patch and pulled the trigger, almost like shooting a shotgun. It did this huge backflip and I stood there in kinda shock and then had the weird thought that "that looked like something out of the movies. Huh. It really does happen." The big flip was kind of funny looking - with the recoil of the gun I just saw feet flying up in the air. It landed on it's back and didn't even twitch.

8 feet, 30-06 200 grain Nosler. THUMP Picked him up and moved him back farther than he was distance from me. :chuckle:
-
hit a coyote in the nose at 3-4 feet with the same round the day before about 100 feet from there. Didn't have to tube skin him :chuckle:
-
About ten feet for me with scoped 7mm shot right over him first shot :yike: luckely the second dumped him he rolled right to me i was able to reach in my pack for my knife and started gutting! Its true! :IBCOOL:

Killed a whitetail doe from the hip on a riparian deer drive at less than 10 feet, with the Model 94 .30/30 I inherited from my grandfather. If I'd been quicker it would have been point-blank as she ran right at me, I was trying to bring the rifle up as she spazzed and leapt to my right. Hit right behind the shoulder, she was so jazzed up on adrenaline at that point she ran like a paint sprayer for about 70 yards before she was pumped out of blood and fell over.
-
Several between 10 and 20 yards.
-
potted a doe with a 94 Winchester in .32 Winchester Special at about 12 feet...I was in a commune with Ma Nature when the doe trotted around the corner of the trail...it was a tucked-under-the-arm shot that broke the front leg, a rib and blew up the heart...that was my second deer ever...a LOT of years ago.
-
First buck. 4x4 whitetail, scored about 140. I was 13 years old. Almost stepped on him. Shot him behind the ear at less than 5 yards as he was jumping over a log. Let's just pretend that's where I was aiming :chuckle: :hunt2:
Took me 10 minutes to stop shaking. Still the biggest whitetail I have ever killed.
-
.300 Win mag this year at about 20 yards.
.300 Win mag a few years ago at 20 feet.
.270 Win several years ago at 15 yards.
My longest shots on blacktails have been with my muzzleloader... :dunno: I take the .300 for the long, cross clearcut shots, but they never seem to present themselves and then I end up bumping them up close and personal. Gonna switch back to ML next year......probably get some longer shots again. :P
-
285 yards :chuckle: I havent shot many deer.
-
Both of mine were less than 50 yards this year.
-
I was in a tree stand about 18 feet up or so. Deer was 10 feet from my tree. Rifle hit with the 300 Win mag.
-
I killed the buck in my avatar at about 20 yds with my dads 7mm rem mag
-
On my Chiwawa Tag 2 years ago I swear I was being tortured. I kept gettting inside 30 yards on nice bucks I did not want to shoot with a rifle as I was holding out for something special. I would have been excited to take any of them had I been carring my bow. In the end I never found a monster but shot a nice buck,we spotted him from about 300 +. As I worked in on him he hit the brush following a doe and to my suprise showed up at 20 yards eventually ending up head on to me at less than 5 yards. He reconized me as somthing other than a bush and backed up 3 steps and turned sideways......boom! didn't go far!
-
1st branch antlered buck was at 15 ft. Was actually heading home before dark all down and depressed, season was about over. This buck is standing next to the road. I stop, get out, load the rifle. I step into the reprod and he is still standing there looking at me with his head down under the limbs. Almost thought I was gonna miss, as close as he was. Bullet broke his neck.
-
we were walking down a canal and a lil 4x4 was standing in the cattails in the canal we didnt see him tell we were less than 5 yds and he thought he was hiding when my friend shot it left powder marks on his side! :chuckle: jokes but it was close enough we could smell him
-
less than 5 yards on my first deer.
-
20 yards on my second deer ever, dropped her in her tracks with a 257 Weatherby.
-
Muzzy Loading last year..50 yards on a nice buck...another perfect day!
-
Last Seasons buck, 5 yards with the .54 smokepole....

We moved from Kentucky to Oregon when I was 18, I had only hunted with a shotgun / slug. I read about hunting out west & bought a Winchester model 70 in 270 cal. I sighted in my 3x9 scope for dead on 200 yards and could hold good out to 300 yards. Well needless to say I shot a 3x3 blacktail @ 20 yards that first year in Oregon. I was glassing 300 yards away to the other side of the clearcut & he stood up a stones throw away. Mike

Mt first buck and largest 2point ever, Model 94 30-30. Many years ago. Mark

My closest shot with a rifle was in Michigan with a Marlin 336 30-30 my grandfather gave to me on my 14th birthday. I was in college with my brother and we went up to visit the grandparents and stayed with them for a long weekend during deer season. It was a whitetail doe walking down a trail when she finally turned broadside right around 9 or 10 yards. She dropped right there!
That day happened to be a great day because it was my second deer that day and that night I won $400 at the slots. :IBCOOL: My brother was pissed! He got skunked that trip.
-
i shot my third buck at about 15 yards came running by and when i threw up my scope was on 9 power :chuckle: let just say there was hair in my scope made a great shot threw the lungs out the other shoulder and he went about 10 yards before dropping
-
shot my late buck a few years ago at 10 yds with the 300 rum. :bdid:
-
My dad shot one at 20 yards. He was just over this finger ridge from me. I couldnt see him. I heard the shot than looked up to see a 3x2 bounding directly at me. He did a digger into a log about 5 yards from me. His 3 point side buried in the dirt. I hovered over him while he took a few dying breaths. Then pulled his antlers out and was relieved to see that third point!

holy cow. share the luck.
Wish I still had it. The 2009 year I bought my Elk, Deer, Bear, Cougar permit and ended up only getting out once to hunt for bear! Work was busy and things were tight. It was my first year hunting here in WA.
I'll be sure to get out more this year!
-
Mine was this last year, a mule deer in Winthrop came charging up out of the timber and stopped right in front me and about 20 yards, BOOM! done. My dad likes to talk about the blacktails that he used to shoot. He had a tree stand on a buddies property, the only problem was the deer came right under the tree instead out from it so most of his shots were straight down into the top of the deers heads! I think he said he was only about 10 feet up.
-
This one made me think.. I believe mine was about 72 yards. Fork horned blackie.. The buck I'm most proud of. Worked the hardest to find him.
-
Last day of season jumped 2 bucks, over volcanic ridge,no tracks, asked myself if I was a buck where would I bail? One Barrel sage pocket 1/4 mile out, walked up to it,put rifle to shoulder took one step in and intentionally snapped a sage trunk,up he came out of bed,his eyes said Oh SH**!! Click off safety,Goodnight.Nice 4 pt. MULEY. 12-15FT.
-
9 feet with my marlin 44mag lever action. Was about the coolest shot ever. It went straight down. Broke all 4 legs when it collaspe on them. That blacky tail was good eats too. :)
-
It was my second year of deer hunting, opening day of doe season in Pennsylvania. I heard my Dad shoot down in the swamp, and then a few deer came up in the hemlocks where I was at. The lead doe came trotting by at 30 yards and I nailed her with Grandpas 30-06. I filled my Bonus doe tag the next day! Sure are warm memories!

At 1 yard gust knock it over the head with you stock.

14 years old, sitting on a old growth white pine stump on the end of a spruce-cedar swamp & hardwood line during a Yooperland snow storm in Baraga County back in 1965. Young spike heading into the swamp to wait out the storm
-
When I was 13 my dad set me up next to a tree near a game trail. My dad and uncle went back to the truck to drive to the end of the woodlot. As soon as they drove away 3 whitetail does ran down the trail right towards me. Stopping less then 2 yards from me on my left and started feeding. I put the front sight post of my 30-30 right behind the shoulder of the biggest doe and squeezed the trigger. She dropped like a rock. My dad couldn't believe it. I remember him asking me if I could smell her breath. Good memories.

Several years ago, on opening morning, I had some bad food the night before and I had to drop the drawers in a hurry.
I looked uphill from me while in the squatting position and along walked this 3x4 mulie. No idea what the critter was thinking, but
he walked about 20 feet from me. Not unlike those tales of hunters putting their rifles against a tree and walking some paces,
I had my rifle on the ground in front of me. Picked it up, pointed it and pulled the trigger.

First Muzzle loader Deer fork horn mule deer taken at 4 yards, walked up behind me as i was sittin on a stump.
