What is the difference in short action and long action....

Will a different rifle stock fit for another rifle of the same namebrand.......Example, (stock like a 300 rifle stock fit a .270 and vise-versa?)

Savage maybe . No if the 300 has the magnum barrel . If they both have a sporter profile , they should fit (Savage's and Stevens are the same) Don't know about others.

Savage with accu-trigger can be made to fit old style stocks with a little work . Newer CF magazine models will not fit the older stagger feed stock , some have made them work with inletting . Short action will not fit long action stocks . Long action will not fit short action stocks . They also made a intermediate action that is called a J series .
The newer Savage Magnums have a step in the barrel just in front of the barrel nut
the actions are the same size as the .270/30-06 . Unless you are talking about the WSM calibers . If you rifle has a 3 digit #110 to116 long action , 2 digit #10 to 16 short action .
The J series rifles were also 3 digit numbers .
Every body totally confused as I am now ?

All Long Actions = 5.062" (1958 to present)
1st. Gen Actions - 4.522" (1959 to 1987)
2nd Gen Short -4.275" (1998 to 2006)
3rd Gen Short Actions = 4.400"-2006 and up

First Generation Short Actions:

"Series J" actions. 0.540" shorter than the standard long action

Post by: high country on January 13, 2008, 08:23:49 AM: after rereading your example guns I have to change my answer to yes. the 270win and 300win are the same action length,different bolt face, but same action length. if you are refering to 270wsm and 300win the answer is still no.

It is an older stock(post 64 rifle and stock) with a blind floor breach and all i know is that unlewss i have all the floor and internal housing metal shroude piece then i cant make it anything else.

Well i just found a synthetic stock for my everyday hunting rifle and am wanting to know if my winchester model 70 is a long action or short?

I am a tiny bit confused by "old post 64"......if it is a push feed, ie; nothing but the bolt exposed in the action feed window, then it is in fact a post 64. if it has the claw extracor like a ruger m77 than you could have one of two winchester.... a pre 64 or a post 64 classic. both are different stocks.

sage, what are you planning for your build? a mountain gun? a varmint gun? budget? there is a bunch of quality difference between manners, mc millan and hs. toss out what you hope the gun is gonna be and I will tell you what has worked or not worked for me and why.....might save you some $$$, might cost you some $$$

As we have talked about eariler Im leaning towards a 6.5 cal for the BC. Ive read inyour past posts of you DRTing deer a long long ways off with your 6.5 /06 and am impressed by the reputation of this cal. My thoughts are for a gun that is lively but very much at home in a prone position, able to utilize all that a give cal has to offer as well as be easy on the shoulder. My current budget is right at 2500 without optics(thats a whole nother relm..........lol) . My action is a donor remmy m700 and I want the barrel to finish at 26 - 28''. I know that this gun will be heavy an am planning for that, but i think 12lbs will be right about what I want it it. Almost like the Savage BVSS. Only thin g is I dont like Stainless. What do you think of this buildup? Any feedback or advice will be most appreciated.

I don't like to pack it near as much as my light guns, but what it lacks in portability it more than makes up for in accuracy. I don't think you will be impressed with the round for quick long range shots, but if you have time to range it and do the math it is VERY impressive.

I was thinking custom? maybe composite? i will probably just keep it because money is tight and there are other things i want more first.....

If I was in your situation I would go for the snythetic, but be careful that its handlaid and NOT injection molded because these tend to flex . Have you looked at any of the Boyd stock? I have one on a 7/08 that I found on EBAY a while ago. A little bedding and shes a shooter. BTW this one is a laminate, which is very stable but a bit haevier that just wood.

Highcountry, your post sums up what Im looking for. Down where I hunt the shots can/are long, but the deer arent in any kind of rush(public ground btw) . I have a 308 set up for these kinds of oppurtiites, but want a better BC than the 308 offers and IMO i know I dont need a super magnum to do it. My deer this you was shot in one of the situations and never moved from his bed. I practice very regularly and am wanting to punch some steel or paper( and coyotes ) at extreme ranges.That is my plan anyhow. Ive also thought of the new Savage F class 6.5/284 but they seem to be in short supply. Sounds like you have the experiance to understand what Im looking at doing, so Ill be picking your brain alot if you dont mind. You have given me alot of sound advice. What is your rifle consist of and howd your build/ ideas start.

if your 308 will stabilize the bergers you could stretch that gun a long ways out. put it through the lights and figure what range it goes subsonic, back up a few hundred yards and start mapping.

the 6.5/284 will impress the heck out of you.....especially with the savage accuracy.

My 308 is a Howa 1500 supreme varminit, i belive is what they call it, laminated stock,1 in 10 twist, bone stock except for the trigger, I put a rifle basix in it seems decent enough for the money. I got a smokin deal on it from a guy at work and couldnt pass it up. It loves the 168 Fed golds, but I want to try some of the Black Hills stuff, just cant find any around.You ever shoot out at Mica? Ive been told they have gongs out to 600yds but havent been out there yet.

Post by: high country on February 03, 2008, 07:05:55 AM: mica has gongs and sillouttes at 440 and 660 as well as a steel buffalo at 1k. those 168's are ok in the 308 to at least 600, I would want BIG bergers to shoot farther, but I think you are too light on the twist to stabilize them.

The Howa website says that this is a 1 in 12 twist. Do you think that will stabilize the heavier Bergers?. BTW I may be ordering the barrel for my build this week end im looking at getting a Rock barrel but am looking at early summer before I reciev it, any feedback on this?
