Title: Extra full turkey choke and non-toxic loads
Post by: ADAMS on December 16, 2009, 11:01:09 PM
I'm going to go out to Shillapoo for some cotton tails.   My shotgun, an 870, has an extra full turkey choke.  I need to use non-toxic shot out there and got a box of Remington HD.  I don't think there will be a problem running harder, non-toxic loads out of that choke but want to get some opinions / thoughts from the brain trust here.

Better shoot those rabbits at 105 yards or they will be burger with that combo.

I've hunted rabbit (jackrabbits) before with this set up and there is something to being able to reliably take that 40-45yard shots.

Is it the extended choke?  Not sure if that's what its called but shoot a turkey extra full choke that extends past the end of the barrel.  I have been shooting it that way for years out of my 870 up to including T shot steel.  No problems so far.

Yeah.  It extends about 1-1/2".

Yeah.  It extends about 1-1/2".

Should be good then.  The way it was explained to be is that the choke is beyond the barrel and so it has room to expand.  Not causing excessive stress to the barrel of the gun.  I was told to keep an eye on the choke after extended use as it could start showing signs of wear.  I probably have 1500-2000 rounds through this one with no signs of stress so far.  I figure if it does show signs of stress someday I will just go buy a new one.  As a new choke tube is cheaper than a new barrel.

I just have to make sure I don't shoot any birds to close in with it.  But I have to admit after using it for a couple years on ducks and geese, when I switched to a modified for upland my aim was greatly improved.

It's not a factory Remington choke.  It's a Briley.

What size shot are You hitting the bunny's with.
On My Carlson tubes (Extended) They are good to go with nothing bigger than B.B.
I have a full set of Brileys and a set of Carlson's Both of these tubes will handle any Non-toxic shot. They will be fine with small game loads forsure.

Actually it's a Kicks choke tube.  "Gobblin' Thunder"  I went on some of the aftermarket choke tube manufacturer's sites and found it.

I have #4 Remington HD which is too big but I couldn't find #6.

I regularly kill pheasants, quail, and rabbits out to 50 yards + with a modified choke, as do all the guys I know. I know what my gun does with a turkey choke and #6's at 45 yards on a patterning board...that would devestate and ruin a rabbit. The kicks choke should demolish a rabbit at that distance.

Kicks e-mailed me back to say that they did not recommend use of Remington HD ot Hevi-Shot out of a choke with greater than modified constriction.
