I cant hunt very well but I will Rip some Lips....Wet side! Just wanting to see the Monster Steelie Pics!! The next State Record Steelhead is going to be Caught this year...is it going to be you? I seen a 4' steelhead at the Tailout of a certain Rif on a Certain River yesterday, could'nt get it to take anything!!~!! I am not joking The Steelhead was 4' Long (MAYBE 5') I think it was a 40+lb fish!! I dont do Drugs and I did'nt even have a Drink.....been fishing my hole life and I am telling you it was That BIG!!! I have caught many, many, many Steelhead in my time (41yrs) Hands Down the Biggest Steelhead I'v Ever Ever Seen!! :dunno: I will tell you guys because this Hunting Washington.com Is the BEST!! AND You guys are Awsome!! N.F. Lewis River!! If I'm lying I'm Dieing!!! The Record is in there AND HE IS A HOGGGGGGGG!!! 40lbs maybe 50lbs GO hang that fish for the books. I swear I could not sleep last night over seeing this fish
-
In the last few days I've heard of a 250 pound cougar and now a 40-50 pound steelhead on here. That would beat the state record by like 10 pounds. If you catch it take some measurements and release it. Good luck with that.
-
-It was probably a winter king on that river, wrong time of the year for the monster metelheads right now on that system. :twocents: or even a tiger muskie if it was that long, there in there!
-
That's a very big fish. They all ways look larger in the water.
Are you sure it was a steelhead. The largest winter fish are normally later returning fish, March or so. The largest summers are the B run in the snake. They do stray of course. There are still some salmon in the rivers.
A 40 pound steelhead would be about a 10% increase over the current record for either winter or summer run.
-
You down south? Nates already showing up? Im thinking winter king also. :dunno: That would be a big metalhead. I have a pic of an oinker that an Indian had netted from an un named river from last year. True to God 37 pounds. It is a beast of a fish.
MS
-
I agree with Hangfire... more than likely a salmon. But that would be an impressive steelhead.
-
After hearing what was said! Does anyone know what the State Record is? I know what the State record is....i seen the time before the last state record fish with my own EYES!! It was in the Trunk of a 1976 Datsun It was Caught from a very good friend of mine Mr. Gooidwin; You really dont have to belive me. Last year I hooked 2 Steelhead in the Lewis River that pushed 30lbs....Lost them! There was a Sled that one of the Hogs Slammed the side of his Boat and he Yeld!!! OMG!! That thing was HUGE~!! This is No fish Story!! I Know what I saw!! This is going into the PEET PEEV Tread.....I'm telling you guys that it at the least was 4' long. Thats on the short side. I Know the Dif. From Salmon/Steelhead/Carp....I KNOW MY FISH!! It reallly sucks not to have any proof or a pic...I had a feeling this was going to be the case....I am going in the Morning and bring that DAMN FISH to Hunt-Washington Just so I dont look Stupid!! P.S. There are No DAMN SALMON IN THE N.F. LEWIS that are any other color then BLK!!!!! Man you guys
-
P.S. Muskys in the N.F. LMAO!!! Ya RIGHT Never in a million years
-
That would suck if you hook that thing and a Muskie takes it :chuckle: I'm sure you saw something big, but when you talk about a steelhead pushing 48 inches I get a little skeptical. Go get it and prove me wrong. At least your fishing, something I need to do! I think the Winter record was caught on the Hoh last year by a fly fisherman. He bonked it :bash:
I may be wrong but it was 33 plus. The Summer record is still 35. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
-
There are right chinook in the NFL right now... BElieve me... And the biggest steel head i have ever seen was in the kalama... I do not believe there is a 40 pound steelhead out there. If that fish was 40 inches long i would guess early winter chinook...
-
I saw a 6-foot steelhead in the skookumchuck last night.... :chuckle:
-
i heard there was a marlin caught in dog lake last week, same guy caught a halibut in the I-82 ponds :chuckle:
-
Remember the Barracuda caught in the Green?
-
Lol
-
the biggest steelie i ever saw was trying to take the boat down so i threw a propane bottle in his mouth and shot it with a gun, :fishin:
-
The world record is 42 lbs. Go catch him. Would be pretty cool to bring the World Recod to WA. Good luck and tie good knots
KLICKMAN
-
Seen a coupla of fish that would be written in this states book as "records"........
Aint one of em from no Colombia Trib, and sure as hell aint in December.
You saw a late, bright, winter nooker.
Believing there are toad steelies the size you speak of in this state.........most definitely
Pushin 40#?............know it. Catchin one?.......fat chance. Perhaps if you sew four 10#ers together.
-
The State Record For WA. State is 38.9lbs Caught on the N.F. Lewis River!! FYI! I have pics of a 29lb "Winter Stealhead" I caught on the N.F. Lewis River I lost 2 that where well into 30lbs....dont have to belive me....IDK! I will be posting pics later today with the next State Record....go'n fish'n you should try then you will know the Diff. between Steelhead/Salmon! There are no Bright Salmon in the N.F. Prove me wrong on that one......thanks guys this is interesting....Tight lines
-
It would be pretty awesome if you caught one. I've seen a couple in the 30's but never anything approaching 40. I'd have a stroke too. Next time throw something small at him, deaddrift right above his nose. FISH ON!
-
Be pretty cool if the guy brought back the fish and proved all the unbelievers wrong. SOunds like whatever he saw was a helluva fish. Hope he catches it.
-
Back in my younger days when steelhead fishing the saying was 1# per inch over 20". Now I guess there in a formula to go by. I have caught a fish at 36', guess what 16#,I have caught a fish at 38", guess what 18#. I personaly saw a 42" hatchery fish caught on the Sky at Lewis St. (86) Stopped by Triangle Bev. in Snohomish on the way home, Picture that day of 42" fish, Guess what 22#. So a 48" Steellhead would not be out of the question. :dunno:
-
"State record" steelhead on the Lewis was 35 and change...........record only on paper.
Original post said 4-5 footer.........huge range there. Do you realize how much weight gain steelhead get not only for every inch longer, but every half inch in diameter?
What year did the Lewis knock out that "state record"? Betcha there aint one chromosome left in gene pool from fish like that.........because if was prolly thirty years ago.
Everyone sees pictures of huge steelies from time to time............they come from places like Clearwater, ID, British Colombia, and the Washington Coast.
There is an exponentially better chance of a chrome nooker in the Lewis than a 4-5 foot steelhead.
Either way............somebody go catch that sumbitch. I wanna see a fish of this maganatude.
-
When talking about trophy Steelhead and Salmon it's the girth measurement that makes the difference. There's a big difference between a 40 inch fish with an 18 inch girth compared to the same fish that has a 20 inch girth. It's real easy to overestimate fish weights. Go catch it :)
-
P.S. Muskys in the N.F. LMAO!!! Ya RIGHT Never in a million years
Im not joking, Ive never seen one and I wouldnt believe it either But a guy back trolling plugs I believe it was last year caught a monster tiger muskie in the lewis, no *censored*! I would Believe that over your 5 ft Steelhead! It may have been the only one in the river and im sure somebody through it in there from merwin lake or somthing but that guy caught it!
-
First off!! Thanks Bone!! Your the only beliver...Well no state Record caught today!! But did get 2 keepers! If I add the weight of each fish the Total would be some where in the 10lb+ :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: But we are having Steelhead for Din-Din! I took Cell phone pics Dont know how to Get them on here....dont worry not missing much on these WOOPERS!! I dont know if I will catch the Big State! But when it happens someone will be saying I'M SORRY!! :chuckle: This was a cool thread about Steelhead....Interesting to me :dunno:
-
You guys are All Wrong! The "Official Record" is
steelhead, winter-run Oncorhynchus mykiss 32.75 lbs Gene Maygra EF Lewis River, Clark Co. April 14, 1980
steelhead, summer-run Oncorhynchus mykiss 35.06 lbs Gilbert Pierson Snake River, Whitman Co. November 23, 1973

A 48" steelhead might not be a state record. If a 20# fish is 40" then figure at best it might have been in the low 30ish range. Not going to say you didn't see a big one. Might have been but I tend to say it was one of them winter nooks that my buddy has been catching the last few weeks.
Regardless of what you seen I hope you have fun getting after him. It must be a rush fishing knowing you have one like that lurking around. Every time the line bumps and you feel that fish tug yer heart skips and you think "is it him" Must make for a fun day.
Good luck I hope you do catch the next state record!!! And if it was a metalmouth who says it was wild? :yike:

landing the damn thing is the prob
-
large steelies can be brutal to land, my 20+ native took 15+ minutes. on 8lb ande. great fight
-
Ya yesterday....setting the Hook like I was trolling of the Florida Keys!! :chuckle: :chuckle: It was funny stuff! I get on here and talk about the Moby Dick I seen...and catch may of been the Smallest Steelhead I have ever Hooked! The scannes of Eggs weighed more then the Damn Fish!! :chuckle: :chuckle: I have pics on my Cell Phone that I dont know how to get on here.....I have caught Bigger Trout in a Lake... :IBCOOL:
-
thats funny, better then gettin skunked though
-
Here is just a cell pic of that big one I mentioned earlier the Indian had in his gill net. It was from this year (I'm talking feb/march when the biggy's are actually in the rivers) :chuckle:

I've been lucky enough to catch a couple in the 20lb class, quite the battle. Both were hooked on the Cowlitz while side drifting in my boat. I think it would have been a whole different ballgame if I had been standing on shore. In the boat we can drift down with the fish or follow it back up or across without over stressing the line, from shore you don't have that luxury unless you can run over uneven terrain like a mt goat. The 30# class is something we all dream of but seldom see, let alone achive. I will be trying the day after Christmas again, maybe Santa will bring me the lucky lure.
-
A twenty plus, in a cantankerous disposition can do many a bad thing..............
However, not all of dem git that way. Buddy of mine landed a 31 inside of 5 minutes. Fat, lazy steelhead.
Lot of personality in steelhead........Cowlitz fish seem to be among the laziest, along with Snoqualamie fish.
The hottest fish I have ever seen were in the Mattole River of N. California. Small fish, but meaner than a snake.
Are there big steelhead comin through here in Feb. and March? A guy should be switchin to springers on the Colombia or its tribs by then.
-
I have pics on my Cell Phone that I dont know how to get on here
text them to your email address. just enter your email address just like you would a phone #.
Are there big steelhead comin through here in Feb. and March
native winter fish, big boys... most of the rivers are usually closed, at least the "s" rivers up this way.
-
Fishing the Snake back in the 80s and 90s between Lewiston and Asotin during U of I homecoming weekend every year we saw some huge Steelies! Though the biggest I ever caught there was a 24 lb tagged hatchery fish. I sent the tag in and they sent back a fish history that showed the fish was tagged on the clearwater in ID. Three years later it went up the Lewis and was recorder at that hatchery before going back down and up the Snake to where I caught it. I always thought they went straight up the river they grew up on. The WDFW said that was rarely the case they may go up a few different rivers before going home. The older gentleman we use to fish with had many old photos of Steelies caught on the Snake back in the 30s and 40s that "appeared to be" way over 35 lbs.
-
Alchase i'v heard that Steelhead are the only Fish that will go to other rivers then Home! I use to fish the Kalama Tide water alot and we would catch a Snake River Bound "Humpy" I have caught only 1 but my friend got 2 in one day. They say that Snake River Salmon will Come in the mouths with the Tides and Then head Home! :dunno: There is Still a Big Steelie in them there WATERS!! I Seen'em! Might of been one of those, Tarpin!! Thats what it was a Freak'n Tarpin....i'm calling that Guy, whats his name? Big Fish Hunter, or what ever... :chuckle:
-
P.S. I cant figure out how the H$$! to Text the Damn Pic off my Phone its not WORKING!!! That was anouther funny part of my Big Fish hunt day, leave the freak'n Camera at home!! It was a Wash before I even left the Drive way! Could you just see it now, catch the Freak'n State Record Fish and its Freak'n Wild and all you have is a Stupid Cell phone :bash: :bash: :bash: I would just release my self into the water....leave the fish laying on the Bank. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
go to the pics section of your phone...click the pic you want then click options or something like that. there should be a "forward" in the list. click that, then enter your email address where you would normally enter a phone #. you might have to change the text or something to get it to type letters instead of #'s.
what kind of phone do you have?
-
Alchase i'v heard that Steelhead are the only Fish that will go to other rivers then Home!
Not true 1Bow, I was talking with one of the Columbia bio's last year about this, he told me there were some sturgeon caught in Russia a couple years that were tagged and released in the Columbia :yike:
-
Thats interesting Huntnphool! I did hear that as well. Its pretty amazing the Distance fish Swim. I have been trying to get ahold of a Friend of mine that Caught and Landed a 30+ Steelie....he has Pics trying to get him to send them but Of Course cant find him! Just trying to Show some Non-Believers that there are Steelhead In the N.F. Lewis that are That Big! Some people dont think they are in the just because there not seeing them Hang from a Meat Hook! Many, Many Steelhead Swim in and Out of that River and Never see a Bait in front of them....There hole life! Just my :twocents:
-
You know how fish story's are but there's a roomer around town a 30 lber was caught on the Bogachiel this year.

I believe!!! I know of a 29 taken from the Lewis just a few years ago by a guide. It was even on the front cover of STS. I fished with him and got the story first hand he even showed us wehre he got it. Talk about a pig!!!
That river has had some huge fish taken from it. Wasn't it a few years back that some fish Bios found a coho carcass that they figured over 30# :yike:
Kris
-
i believe most every steelhead river on the west side has the potential for a 30lb fish. they all kick out 20+ lb'ers every year.
-
I don't think anyone said they didn't believe in 30 lb steelhead, the first post said 40-50 lb. in the NFL. Me personally I think that may be a stretch since the world record is 42.
-
Well steelies in the water are kinda like bears on the hoof. Terrible ground shrinkage once there harvested.
Could there be a 40+ sure could, just like there are probably 500 pound B. Bears out there.
Shootmoore
-
Lets not forget that everything appears 1/3 larger submerged too.
-
Does anyone have the book "Steelhead Fly Fishing and Flies" by Trey Combs. In it he recouts a story of a 30# and 40# fish that returned to the Cowlitz. Both were trucked back down to the mouth of the Cowlitz after they arrived at the hatchery. One of them had a clown colored okie and line that they had broke off on some poor soul. I lent the book to my neighbor so I don't have the exact quote.
That book was published in the late 70's but I don't remember if they said what year that happened.
-
That's a Fish that got away. :'( :'( If you hook one of those Pigs from the Bank You are in Trouble!! Hope you have a Runway. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
This jibber jabber would be several times more believable if it was not December, on a SW WA river..........
Wanna do some crazy talk? Consider the Coast.................in April.
I have a friend, who knows a guy, and while gutting his last 50# native steely........
pulled a 5# springer jack out of the gizzard parts.
Bout the same odds of some 5' steely in the Lewis.
Anyways, much more entertaining readin about real fish. Nough of the rotten salmon talk.
-
whats ur guys guess on the weight of this old native?

220ish and low to mid twenties. What was the tape sayin?
-
Mr Tomy Ur Funny....the nowhere of everything fish.... :chuckle: :chuckle:
Easy brah, better git back to searchin for your leviathan of the deep. Still stick with 5' as a possibility?
I know just enough to get me in enough trouble.......and the upper ends of possibilities.
Just like I saw a unicorn that crapped skittles and pissed a rainbow while I was deer hunting. I did not draw a unicorn tag this year, so the kill will have to wait.
-
ill try to get the measurment., but i do think its over twenty, and my hands are huge and couldnt come close to goin around tail.
-
Big 10-4 on the girth. Solid shoulders on him. Tail circumference is hard to feign.
Try to get the measurement? You got him in a cooler or something?
-
no, my buddy that was with me wrote it down, had to get it.
was 35" and girth was 25
calculator says 26.34lbs
-
By the paintjob on that bad dog, that was not recently, eh?
Which calc you using? The one I got came in @24 and change. Either way, its in there. Not too many steelies crackin 20 without goin 40".......... That is one short heavy fish.
Glad he climbed out of the cooler. Seen too many of em who did not figger out how to git out.
That fish is today's big winner..........unless somebody be comin up with the magical 5'er.
-
Tomy you sure have a way!! Have you ever caught a Steelhead in your life time? And if so When and where was the last one? You are one of those know it alls....Could'nt catch a fish if you worked at it all day.... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
You know, you are right my friend with the magnifying eyeballs. Never seen one.....or salmon for that matter.
The little cartoon punctuations are a nice touch, though.
-
got last winter, maybe late summer fish? never caught one that big or dark. but he def is a heavy fish.
smoked me on 8lb ande.and slammed a tiny salad shrimp with just a split shot. released with no probs, saw him in the same hole a week later. 8)

Who cares how dark they are when they get that big.
10# dark steely? I could care less.
20# dark steely......much more forgiving in judging the quality of the trophy.
Git him mounted.
-
ha, you do have a point.
you know anyone good to do mount? idea on price? thnx
-
Not trying to start anything. Did you catch him in an area that it's legal to keep a native? That fish looks like it has a intact adipose fin. I know you didn't keep him this time but you should be sure he can be kept if your thinking of doing a skin on mount.
-
That guy outta Gig Harbor...........Blackwater Trading if I remember right, is the among the best reproductions I have ever seen. Way better than skin mounts.
Got a waiting list bout a year, last time I checked.
Bet a fish that size will be under $1600. Spensive, but you will have that bad dog on the wall for a LONG time. NEVER go cheap on fish reproductions......seen brohunskies do it...........disgusting.
bowhunter........ I call guys who do fish reproductions just for fun. You know, so I can sound like I have seen a fish or three.
-
couldnt keep him, so cant get skin mount i guess. so what do i do?
-
Do not need to keep..............ever.
Just bring the dimensions and all the pictures you have of the fish.
He takes a mold of a fish the same size and adds fins, scales, eyes, teeth..........on and on.
Final product will outlast a skin mount any day. They look much better to boot.
Seriously.
He will do it all to your specs (background, if you like) with just length x girth, and all the color photos you have. The chap can make the texture of scales and airbrushes the whole gig to perfection.
-
Since you have the measurements and a picture, Blackwater Trading company can do a fiberglass reproduction. Does real nice work. Not the cheapest though. So you need to be willing to drop the coin. He's in Olympia, phone number is 253-851-2551. E-mail address blackwatertrading@earthlink.net. Web address: www.blackwatertrading.com . This info came off a business card he gave me last year.

thanks alot for the info
-
i think bucklucky on here is doing repro mounts now, and maybe michelle nelson too.
-
thanks, ill check em out
-
Yes get it done. I'd love to see a 35 inch steely with a 25 inch girth. That was one fatty!
-
can u tell me a price?
-
The story of super large steelhead being recycled by the hatcheries and coming back again normally with any number of lures hanging from their mouth come up every year.
They are just that stories.
Large fish return to most hatcheries at one time or another but not the size and frequency that these stories would have you believe.
-
Those hatchery stories do have a way of gettin passed around like the clap.
Every guy who has ever had dreams of monsterbeast steelhead has heard that famous Cowlitz story.
Not nearly as much BS being slung, when the subject of toad steelies from tribal nets, though.
You do not even want to know the truth..........same goes for salmon
Stories get legs faster in more densely populated areas. We could not even conceive how many large steelhead breath their last in a net, in the middle of nowhere.
-
ha, you do have a point.
you know anyone good to do mount? idea on price? thnx
Check with bucklucky he's doing fish now.

I'll put my vote in for Luke @ Blackwater. He's a buddy of mine. He's done a few for my dad and I. Phenomenal work and detail. I've mentioned the site to him a few times but I think he is busy enough from doing shows.
On another note...
Still waiting to see this sasquach world record steelie! :chuckle:

No State record to be had this Weekend...i'll keep at it
