Title: crossbow advice
Post by: littlebuf on December 20, 2009, 04:39:00 PM: my dad is looking to get a crossbow for elk next year (disabled hunter) and i know zero about them or where i could go looking for one around here with him. his budget isn't huge and he's looking to keep a set up under 450 or 500. any advice is appreciated. thanks

Post by: fishcrazy on December 20, 2009, 07:36:15 PM: I know a guy who has the disabled permit and he ended up going with the Bowtech. Can't remember the model but I think it was called the Stryker, it was well over 1k. He's really happy with it.

I think he got it from Wolesale Sports in Lacey.

Post by: Snapshot on January 02, 2010, 07:24:22 PM: Best advice I can offer is to do a search for a crossbow forum, because in this state crossbows are not archery with the exception of those special use permits for the permanently disabled; so there isn't much by way of direct experience with them.

Also, you might try the PCBA; I don't know if they have a forum or not, but they will have direct experience with helping to get folks set up.

Post by: sako223 on January 02, 2010, 07:43:00 PM: Saw a few models at Cabelas in the little shooting booth. The weren't cheap though. There are so many models for speed and width. Some have the option for a hand crank. Like a gun I think it would be beneficial to handle a couple so you have something to measure by.

Post by: Old Dog on January 02, 2010, 09:13:14 PM: you should be able to pick up a Horton 175 kit for about 500. The Bowtech Stryker sells for $1500, but I didn't know they made a legal sight for it. I've got a pretty good handle on crossbows, but my counterpart, Rod, in Lacey is more of an expert than I am.

Post by: littlebuf on January 02, 2010, 09:36:03 PM: yeah you were one of the "leads" i was going to count on when the time came for dad to go shopping. oh and my buddy came over and saw how good my bow is shooting and he's wanting to bring his bow in for a tune up so you'll be seeing us soon
