This was a one chance in a million shot and I almost have it in focus. I sat and watched this pair of woodducks for a long time. It started out as the female only as I scared the male away by accident. She kept calling and calling and then he came in. They then swam awhile in front of my while I hunkered in the cattails. All of a sudden there was a ruckuss and the male came up with a critter from the swamp. I don't know what it is......At first I thought it was a sculpin, then it had legs. Well, after about 20 minutes Momma caught one and immediately flew to the bank to eat it. I think it could be a Toad tadpole maybe.....here is the picture...............

I thought sculpin until I saw legs, then I am like HANFORD sized pollywogs. Talk about a meal. I wonder if there were a bunch of them there. I'd have never thought it in icewater. COOL!
-
Great photo's however not what I was expecting from the Title of the post.

Incredible pics Bone, those really are beautiful. I would love to have a pair of mounted wood ducks on my mantle, absolutely the prettiest of Ducks.

This is the photo I blew up for my brother for Christmas. I framed it in a black wood frame with a creme type matting with black next to the duck. I hope he is not a member.....

Dude you're the master. Absolutely in credable pics!!!!! Yes those are bullfrog tadpoles. I can't believe there are some around at this time of the year. I take my son to a local pond in June where we catch them with dip nets. We put them in a bucket to check them out for a while then let them go. Great fun with the kids, and educational.
Man those are aw some pictures.
-
Doug you are the man, what an awesome set of photos. I would have never thought that there would be tadpoles or polliwogs this time of year. Perhaps they are so large they need the winter to mature? Just great pics and as always thank you for posting them :).
-
Lots of correct answers here. They are definitely bullfrog tadpoles, and yes, they do take 2 years to mature. Those guys are sleeping through the winter in the mud, and will finish their transformation next year - if they don't get eaten!
-
I agree, bullfrog tadpoles. I saw some in CA that looked like baseballs with tails and little legs. The bullfrogs were enormous, though.
By the way, if you ever get a chance to gig giant bullfrogs, go do it. Take a 12 pack of beer, a spear and a headlamp - SUPER fun. They eat good, too.
Great pictures of that woody - really, really cool.

I love wood ducks! I missed one a couple days ago.

I concur. Gigging bullfrogs at night is quality fun. Fry the legs hot enough and they don't taste fishy.
-
Outstanding pictures Bone!
-
Great shots. I haven't scene them grab those before.
-
That's a bullfrog tagpole - they go down like raw oysters :EAT:
And that photo is incredible!!!
-
Thanks! It was funny watching the male endo it and take it whole. He did damn near choke to death. :chuckle:
-
Funny! When I was a kid, I watched a seagull nearly kill himself trying to wolf down a whole flounder on the dock one morning. They aren't exactly the best shape for eating whole.
-
Awesome shots, Bone!!!
-
GREAT PICS BONE!!!!! Wood Ducks are my favorite... And those are Bullfrog tadpoles... I use to use them for bait catfishing....
