I purchased a sporterized mauser in .308 ealier this year and paid about the same price. don't know what kind of barrel it has and it did come with an unknown brand fixed power scope. I thought it was a good deal... but i did talk it down to that price as well... If it were me i'd try offering less just to see but thats just how i am.

Offer 225.00 see if he bites, but the price he is asking is not a bad price at all.

That shur is purty.

good looking rifle...beautiful lumber.

I'd take it. nothing wrong with fenageling for a lower price though. whats the glass.

I would be happy to get that gun for $275! ER Shaw makes a good barrel, and that stock sure is nice. Let us know how it shoots.

Herters was a small version of Cabelas. Some outlet stores mostly mailorder. There are Herters brand rifles too.

In the 70's I had a Herters 2 1/2 x scope with a post in it. It was on a Rem 742 BDL Deluxe 308 Win. My dad used it for many years and after I bought him a new rifle I used it, nice scope never had a problem with it. I've still have a Herters powder measure and a couple of die sets and a bullet swaging dies for a 45 Colt. I don't remember anything that was junk and at the Waseca MN store they had a great selection of beautiful gunstock wood for incredibly low prices even for the day. My X-father in law used to shoot with George L. and his son at the Rochester MN Gun Club
It looks like you have a winner it would cost 10x that to have it built today.

The Mauser action is what all actions since then have been compared to.
Can't go wrong with a Mauser action, strong, smooth and simple. You have to admit that the germans are good at design.

i would see if he will go lower but thats a good price

I may be wrong here, but I would guess that the ER Shaw barrel itself is probably worth close to that price? Maybe I'm wrong, but I know they make great barrels. I've been thinking about getting one for my 06.

I agree. It cost me around $350 to have Shaw rebarrel an FN Mauser with a 24" stainless, bead blasted 338-06. That gun shot great, i only sold it because I wasn't that fond of the Mauser action. But if I had a good looking stock like that I probably would have kept the gun.
