Post by: banannaclip on December 23, 2009, 02:50:18 PM
went up to welts today very slow, all the birds sitting on the bay , i lost count after 4001,lots of birds impossible to get two, left at 11:00 stopped off at a couple places, rawlins road bay access, there was a dead greenhead and snow goose in the ditch rotting away, walked up the dike been redone since i was there last, one thing i noticed was all the feces on the ground ,dog ,and human with t.p  very digusting,,all ducks there were on the bay, lots and lots. stopped off at H/Q unit  they sure did that place in,well at least they will save money on planting grain in that area, you can luanch your right from the  parkinglot.seen a ton of snowgeese in a field next to the main road right were you cant hunt, north sound waterfowlers  were out with decoys to no avail, fun to watch those birds drop with cupped wings and feet out.

i walked up the dike on rawlins road the other day too and noticed the trash. There was a breasted out snow goose and a crap duck that was dumped on the other side.

I know there are a few quality hunt fields on rawlins road, do you guys know if they have been producing at all?

Thats what I gathered too, Ive been driving through this week checking on a quality hunt field I got drawn for but havent seen much off of rawlins road either. There isnt much feed in some of those fields compared to the middle of the island

They were in those fields one day last week, but they came and went very quickly.  Doesn't seem like there is enough feed there to hold them or keep them coming back.  Sounds like they've been spending quite a bit of time off of Fir Island too.

Yesterday I was at the end of Rawlings there and saw the mallard, snowgoose, and poop as well. Wonder if I met any of you, I was in the jeep liberty doing some scouting...

I spent 1 day this week on HQ, and 2 days on stanwood, with not much luck. Tuesday saw tons of snows at stanwood. today, saw probably 1/2 as many. Tuesday they flew south of the river, we had a little rain that day. Today, they flew mostly north towards Fir, and it was blue bird skies. Maybe they fly north on nice sunny days, and stay local/south on rainy days.?.

Next weekend is forecasted rain. Not sure where to focus. I still want a mount-worthy pin, so I may focus on HQ, but I'd love to work the snows. man I love them snows.

I think you are right. I remember seeing more birds hanging around Fir in years past but maybe im just imagining things. I see high flyers heading northeast from the island sometiems but im not sure where they are going. Maybe up the skagit into mount vernon somewhere?

I've seen smaller flocks 100 to 200 as far north as Chuckanut and east across 5 in the fields near Conway school.

What are you guys doing tomorrow? rawlings area, or stanwood?

i'm thinking about just launching out in the bay for pass shooting and sea ducks. If the birds are north though (and the weather has been pretty nice) Rawlings may be a good way to go.

I have watched many birds heading back north.  Probably back up to the Fraiser Valley.

I was out there Wed., there were several BIG flocks coming in really high from the northwest(LaConner direction).  Tonight I just talked to someone who saw lots of geese flying northbound high over downtown Mt. Vernon.
