Just was wondering the weirdest thing anyone has ever found in a salmon/steelheads stomach. Ive caught lots of fish with the usual needle fish, herring, crab larva, shrimp/prawns, stone flies in summer runs, curred roe, died prawns, and once I caught a bass with a 3inch long water beetle in it. I didnt think they got that big around here.
Anyway I caught a coho off the beach this last july on a mini buzz bomb. It was a decent 9-10lb fin cliped fish so it came home. While I was cleaning it I noticed it stomach was looking pretty full. When I cut it open I was expecting to see some needle fish and herring, but all it had in it gut was balled up alder leaves. Not just one but 3 of them. Kinda weird for a fish running around in the salt. Anyone else ever seen this? :dunno:

Alder leaves? That is strange.
I knew a guy who caught a big sucker with a "rubber" in it's stomach. :dunno:

I caught a bass a couple summers ago with bird feathers sticking out of its throat.
-
Not in the stomache, but I once caught an 18" rainbow with my uncle's fly in its lip. I released the fish, gave him back his fly, then proceeded to irritate him the rest of the day telling him how fun it was to catch that fish. All was forgiven though when i pitched the cap off the bottle of Ols Sheepdip.

That is weird. maybe it was trying the new green diet or something. My dad caught a trout with a mouse in its stomach years ago.

There are mouse flies tied for that reason. Usually tied with deer hair. I have never seen anything weird in the fishes stomachs, Just the things they eat (naturally).

I caught the same in the delta in ca,the bass still hitting the lure with a fish to big to swallow in its mouth

My wife caught a 10 lb lingcod. When it puked up its guts on the deck out popped 4 eight inch herring and a chunk of octopus arm about seven inches by an inch and a half. The funny thing was, two of the herring had double hook rigs on them, both were tied with the same funky knot indicating someone else lost this fish twice. :chuckle:
I shot a common merganser drake with a 10" spiny ray digesting in its belly....
-
I caught a smallie that coughed up a rubber worm. That's not really uncommon. What made it strange was it was the same type of worm we were using. Probably picked it up off the bottom or could have been one of the fish we missed while dropshotting the slough that was nearby earlier that day.
-
got a 2 lb largemouth with a baby muskrat!
-
Caught a 18" brookie in a creek up near East Glacier with a full size mouse, unharmed in it's stomach. It was dead but looked like it hadn't even touched a tooth going down the gullet.
-
Ive never found anything unusual in the fish itself but ive caught one silver with a hootchie flasher and deepsix dragging behind it and a king with just a flasher and bait rig hooked in it... i like free tackle :)
-
ive caught many largemouth with whole crawdads in them and more than 1. and then a king salmon with 4 herring in it. then trout with my own lure in its mouth that snapped off a week or so before.

Nothing real strange in a salmon or steelhead, did catch a big northern in minnesota with about a 2lb sucker in its gut that was in one piece, mostly un- digested

When I was about ten, my Dad and I went out on a charter out of Ocean Shores. We spent the morning salmon fishing and listening to this whiny kid a year or two older then I was just annoy everyone on the boat because he caught the first salmon and won the the "first" part of the First and biggest boat derby with a silver about 2.5 lbs. After a few hours and only hooking three salmon total we started bottome fishing. My Dad hooked a 36 lb lingcod, and we caught a few smaller lings and rock fish. I swear by the time we got back to the dock we all wanted to push the kid overboard because of the continuous whining. When the baitboy started unloading the fish we came up one silver short. The captain knew right away what had happened, they cut open the gut of my Dad's ling and there was the whiny snot's silver bit in two pieces, lol. You should have heard the kid cry when the baitboy gave him his slimy fish in two pieces, I was on the ground rolling with laughter.

Not really weird, I thought it was cool though. 35lb King with one of those diving sea birds, Auklets I believe they are called. I can't imagine he thought it was a herring, which would me he thought it looked tasty. Greedy bugger.
-
My son caught a big rainbow trout. I clean it out. Notice there a cigeratte butt.
-
i found a chunk of glass in a steelheads stomach it was about 2"x2"
-
I've caught hatchery plant rainbow with all kinds of wierd crap in em, bellies full of drift wood, cigarette butts etc....was dragging my line around behind my float tube once and spitting sunflower seeds, when I'ld got home with the 5 I'ld kept and started cleaning them they all had bellies full of sunflower shells. I guess that may be considered chumming. I have a friend of a friend that caught a keeper size sturgeon of the east end wall in Astoria, when he cleaned it it had a belly full of dead kittens, somebody apperantly tossed a bag of kittys off the wall and the fish found em.
-
I've pulled many of pounds worth of rocks out of fish from rufus over the years.
-
A rainbow trout with cigarette butts, fir needles, and huckleberries. :yike:
-
I caught a springer a few years back and it had a black wire hanging out of its mouth. When I opened it up it had a transmitter in it's belly.
Also caught a springer that had 6 of the chips they insert into the smolts head in its belly. They found them with the wand that they waive over the adult fishes head.

Several years ago while drifting Ringold....back in the days when we still had a Skamania strain of fish...insted of these Metow dinks...I caught a nice 16lb steelhead that looked like it was caught before with someone fishing with piano wire....i said some thing to my friend after we boated it....i tugged on the wire and out popped a University of Idaho radio tag/plug. It said if found....return for a $25.00 reward. I thought it was to good of a trophy to return so it sits in my gun safe....Looks like it was a Snake fish that took a wrong turn.

I once caught a native brook trout in a small stream in pennsylvania that was 8 inches long and had another brook trout inside it with the tail of the fish sticking out of its' mouth. AND IT STILL BIT!!! I also caught an 18 inch brown trout with a mouse inside it, and once trapped a muskrat with an oil filter rubber ring around it's body. How he ever did that is beond me.
-
I caught a 42 pound king salmon with a nice fishing pole connected to it. :chuckle:some one befor me snagged it in the tail and it must of got loose from ther hands. :IBCOOL:still use the pole today.

Found all the usual, cig butts, hooks, lures, etc., but the most amazing one was a halibut that had six full sets of octopus beaks in it. I know they eat octopus, (that's what we used for bait fishing them commercially), but these were from really, really BIG octopie, and the halibut wasn't very big. It had round pieces of skin just hanging in several places. Apparently from the fight before the feast.
Also caught a couple salmon (commercially in AK) one that had swam through two of the six holes in one of those plastic six pack holders. Then it grew until the plastic rings went through the middle of the fish. One was through the stomach area, the other up towards the gills. The other one was a big coho, that had a huge o-ring that had done the same thing. Just like a tree will grow around a fence wire. Pretty weird looking. Amazing that they could survive.

I know a guy that went on a tuna charter while vacationing on the east coast. He got sea sick and heaved over the side of the boat losing his dentures.
End of the day they found his dentures cleaning a tuna someone else caught.

lots of crawfish. Once we were bass fishing with 5'' top water plugs, my friend caught a 2" bass, that has happened a lot. Trout fishing I snagged something while reeling in, felt like a small branch. when I got it in it was line, that was moving. I pulled the line in and there was a nice rainbow attached to a wedding ring, still alive.

"Re: Weirdest thing you ever found in a fish's stomach?"
Usually, my own lure :chuckle: :chuckle:, on occasion I do get lucky.
The weirdest thing I can think of were other peoples lures, I reeled in a trout at Tanwax one time when I actually snagged a line on the bottom that had snapped off someones line and the fish had swallowed their bait/ hook.

While taking pictures of a 64 lbs. king I noticed something unusual sticking out of its throat, grabbed it and started pulling, ended up being an 18" baby wolf eel.
Saw a 250 lbs. halibut with a tumor/growth in its stomach, it was a calsified mass a little bigger then a softball and weighed about 15 lbs. nasty as hell. I don't keep the big girls to begin with but the thought of eating that would have made me sick. Not the 1st big butt I've seen with tumors but the only 1 I've seen in the stomach.
