Title: Getting ready!! 2010
Post by: Bofire on December 27, 2009, 10:19:27 AM
Hey,
I want to try a "slate" type call actually, I want one of the calls that are a round plate and use use a stick striker to make noise???
LOL :chuckle: :chuckle:
So what i wanna know is, slate best?  Glass? some sort of stone or chalk? I use a box call well but I would like to learn one of these. So is one easy to use?
Thanks
Carl

Get one of each. Not a joke :chuckle: One might work when the other won't. I carry 3 different slate calls. Along with box and boat paddle calls. ;)

PA BEN is right slate calls are good but not water proof. Glass calls are water proof with a carbon striker. You will get different sounds with different pot styles. They are easy to use with some pratice. Get a how to tape on running a pot style call. Also different strikers will back your call water proof and give you different sounds. Glass calls are higher pitched and louder great on windy days. Slate calls in my opinion are the best finishing call in the turkey woods.

Thanks guys, I just ordered two calls from Cabelas, Primos Jackpot, Slate and a Glass one, with strikers.
Probably not the best but they will do until I am ready for a "custom"!!

You don't need anything custom. The frictionite/slatex surface is a great one too. Louder/more crisp than slate, not quite as much as crystal or glass. And its super easy. But original slate is hard to beat. Experiment and figure out what works for you. I can't use glass or crystal. And lots of guys use slates a lot. Personally, I don't as much. I favor a box and a diaphram, but I for sure have a slate in my vest at all times.

I carry about 6 mouth diaphragms, at least 1 box, 2 pot calls with 4 different strikers, and a tube call minimum.  Sometimes I carry a couple of push-pulls, a wingbone, scratch boxes, or other calls they normally won't hear too much.

I will be doing a 2 hour turkey hunting and calling clinic again this year at Cabelas on Sat. Feb. 27th from 10am to noon with non-sanctioned calling contests for youth at 2pm and adults at 3pm (with prizes). We will have a table there from 8am to around 6pm too, and if you'ld like to come down at anytime we'll be glad to give you some one-on-one time and ensure you know how to use your calls. More to follow ...

I have to agree with turkeydancer, I also carry every turkey call in my vest,  but the 2 I use the most is the slate and my reeds.

Slayer,

What call(s) were you using a couple of years ago when you called the tom down the ridge from over a 1/2 mile or so during the youth season in Central Washington?

amen to that i carry five, 2 slates 2 diaphrams and a box call. the box call cuts threw the wind like no other. i like the mouth calls because its hard to work a box or slate at full draw lol

I have been using some nice box calls I have for a few years with good result, wanted to try a Pot call. I carry an open reed predator call24/7!LOL
I cannot work a diaphram call at all. I am a clutz!
Thanks for the advice, I cant wait to get them and get practicing.
I might go to your Turkey deal, Turkey dancer,
Carl

Keep practicing with a diaphragm call. It took me a long time too but they sure are nice when you have a gobbler 50 yds out and you already have the gun up.

Slayer, I was watching the video last night and I can't tell which calls you were using.  But your calling sounded sweet and the Tom was tearing it up that morning answering your calls!

Now that most big game hunting has end and only the lies remain, the count down has begun! About 104 days and a wake up until the spring opener. That is if you can sleep when the season opener is just a day or two away and the birds are already talking.  :mgun2:

I carry 2 box calls, 3 slate/glass calls, 5 strikers, and about 6 reed calls. My hunting partner has about the same.

Bofire - Come on down, but do so early  ... last year on Feb 28th, we had 106 people show up and stay for 2 hours even though Cabelas had only set up 28 chairs ... we were grabbibg tent cots, camp chairs, or anything else not tied down but only got 46 people seated ... the other 60 people stood two & three deep peeking over the display counters (see attached pictures).

I agree about keep trying the mouth diaphragms ... it took me hours to even make a sound, but it came quicker and quicker with the more I practiced .... if you can say the letter "S" you can make them work and I can teach you a few simple tricks that will make it easier to master.  I'm probably not the best caller in the state, but I'm good enough to get birds in as close as their heads at my pants pockets and landing onto my boots ... good enough for me ... besides a live hen would never win a calling contest, but it sure seems good enough for all the toms !
