Looked out the window this forenoon and there was a bunch of wolves going across the hill, grabbed the binos and the spotting scope. They were just having a meeting, 7 of them, playing around, at least one female coming in heat. After about ½ hour Boneaddict showed up with his family so my 3 granddaughters, Bone, Rose and my wife got to watch them. Bone grabbed his camera and took a couple shots then jumped in his rig trying to get closer. About that time the pack split going off in opposite directions, by the time he got to his advantage point they had drifted away.
Bone and his family left to find some bucks to photo, 5 minuets after he left a wolf showed back up, then another and another. I was able to keep at least one in the spotter for the next one and half hours as they wondered around some times single some times in groups. One made a big circle up around the hill marking bushes and come back to meet another which had just caught a gofer and kept it away from a raven which harassed him for ten minuets. Eventually all 7 were back together 200 yards from the neighbors house just plying around, they got into a big draw and I never seen them after that. I know this is long but who gets to watch a wolf pack for two hours.

very cool
-
Very cool. Cant wait to see the pictures. As long as they are going to be here it would be cool to watch them. Be even cooloer when we can hunt them. Dibs on the first tag. :P

Better hope that at some point in time Washington has a hunting season, because they will be about all there is left to hunt. >:(

;) Look like those pack are getting comfortable hanging out. I have lousy Camera couldn't get good pictures several time. :'(
Hopefully Bone carry 400c Camera!
Great story Idabonner. Next time feed them with Elk Steak on ur front door mat.

Bone had the big camera but it's a long ways and spitting snow so the light was bad, but we hope you can see them, Bone will be back in a couple days.
-
Idabooner were the wolves on your side of the river?
-
;) Hope Bone bagged a wrong Cougar on his Boothunter tag.
:chuckle:
Glad to hear u had good day after u saw them. Wish I am up there.
Mulehunter :)
-
Idabooner were the wolves on your side of the river?
No. But they could be any time, the river won't stop them. Once up in BC I seen 3 wolves run a moose into the lake, 2 leaped on its back, one fell off in a little ways but one stayed on 200 feet before he quit and swam back, the moose made it out the other side.
-
Yep, they have been on your side for some time, last spring there were some deer found up in Cow cr. with just their @ss ate out, does and fawns. Trail cam pictures of wolves in Benson Cr. Wolves were seen in the East Chewuch during and after hunting season, next year fitkin will need a new bs story, perhaps he can use global warming. :bash:
-
Sounds like a great spot for some traps.
-
That must of been really something to see glad you could get bone in on it and to top it off you got to be with your grandaughters thanks for the report it was exciting to read.
-
It sounds like a great place for a cow carcass with 220 vac wired to it!
-
I here through the drums that wolves have been sited in Texas Crk. and near the old Vintin Ranch, sound like they are already on the other side of the river. :)
-
Could be why I didn't see a buck there today......
Here they are folks. These are about 3 miles away and crappy air. I tried to get close but they weren't there when I got there. I guess they went on the hunt and the pack split. Then I guess after I left they showed back up. GO FIGURE.
I got six in one picture. I swear there were 8 at one time. Rose swears she saw 8 one time in the spotter while I was chasing them and Idabooner thought he might have seen 8. After they returned, Idabooner watched them for nearly 2 hours it sounds like. They came a lot closer. He Confirmed 7 of them. Interesting enough, I never saw a COLLAR, red or blue, and there were no BLACK wolves. You'll note that the male was straddle another wolf the whole time. Basically the female is coming into heat and one of the younger males (probably last years crop) was getting a little frisky. Alpha male took him down and straddled him for quite a long time. Now I suppose sometime in the future that male will get the boot and he can meet up with a female from twisp River pack and we can have anoterh confirmed pack. I hope this one goes to the Entiat. It might get the attention of some of these govenor tag fellows. :chuckle:

Nice Picture you got! I knew Female is on Heat right now like I said last few days ago on other thread. I knew this is gonna happen! :bash:
No Collar? Interesting...... Thank you Bone.. Cant do with out 400C Camera!
Mulehunter ;)
-
Very cool. I cant wait to see your close-ups one day.
-
Bone - I hope you forwarded the pics to WDFW so they can call them coyotes.
-
If my family hadn't been with me Kain, I would have got them. They showed back up right after I left. Always ina hurry when the family is involved
-
good job Doug.
good ones

You will get them. Only going to be more and more and more.... opportunities. :chuckle:

Wasn't a member building a 1000 yard rifle?? :chuckle:
MS
-
They were last seen a 100 yards from someones house at dark....and closing. I wonder if he has/had/ will have, any ankle biters.
-
Good job Bone
-
bone, could you tell if they were the red legged wolves or not? Did any of them limp just a little bit? :chuckle: Great pictures, wish they were taken draped over the hood of someones truck hood. :yike:
-
awesome that you got the photos bone..... ;)
-
i would hate for one of those coyotes come into my calls roflol :IBCOOL:
We do have some real big coyotes in the Methow, just wish we could tell which was which before the shootin starts instead of when we roll em over :chuckle:
-
Good pics Bone, if anyone deserved to get some pics of the pack together like that it was you. Great work. I know what it takes to get good pics. Its not easy.

You guys are all wrong, all I see are yotes.

Yes a few times I thought one had a slight limp, would that identify which pack it was?

Yep, its the slow pack! :chuckle: :chuckle:

I was trying to decide how stupid I was. Trying to get in the middle of a wolf pack WHILE they were hunting. A .357 tucked in my coat pocket. I guess its a 6 shooter. The 7th or 8th I'd have to beat with the camera I guess. :)
-
Take the lens off before you beat them with the Camera. :chuckle:
Maybe you should have used the bobcat as bait for the wolves?
-
:chuckle:
Allen W might come help Scott fitkin Shut down Deer hunting.
Just like Concrete Elk.

Yeah that's because coyotes like to hunt house cats, small dogs, and even lure out larger dogs and gang up on them as a pack. Coyotes get close to houses.......,wolves don't, if they did we would actually see some valid pics. Until then (better pics), this has all just been a bunch or crap flying around. I don't really like the idea of wolves killing the hell out of our big game animals either, but c'mon man, don't post pics like that and be so quick to call em wolves........have fun with this one dumbos.
-
It's cool you got to see them, but not very cool there haning around so close to the houses. Nice shots Bone.
-

Yeah....nice hazy long distant shots of coyotes. :chuckle:
-
Yeah.... you should have tried out that new Huskemaw scope on those long range yotes :)
-
You obviosuly haven't spent much time in the woods Eastside if you can't tell the difference between the two. I guess those cute little posters along the trailhead are for people like you. Feel free to go dump all six or 8 of them and bring in the pelts. :chuckle: I'd sure feel better. LOL Might even chip in to your legal defense fund.

So your saying that you can without a doubt....100%....say those are wolves with pics like that????? Its not 100%.....its not even 80%. That just the facts...plain and simple. I'm not going to bow down to you and say your right like some folks do on here just because you take a butt load of pics and have thousands of posts. On the last pick....look at the short bodied, pointy nosed little fart standing broadside and tell me that is 100% a wolf. And guys just because someone on this site is a moderator and has been on here for ever doesn't mean you have to agree with everything they do and say.
-
Hey Eastside lets go coyote huntin ;) I won't tell if you won't. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: I have to admit I probably would have shot a few. Maybe next time Bone will get pictures like he did of the big bob.

Oh this is getting good and its only one-sided so far, haha.
-
Oh this is getting good and its only one-sided so far, haha.
Well.......what do you think the odds are that they are actually Wolves, anything less than 100% is B.S. And that goes for some of the other crappy pictures people post on this site claiming wolf......it's just a bunch of crap because you really can't tell for certain.....Yeah there are wolves up there for sure, but the so called pics are just stupid......I actually wouldn't mind seeing a valid quality pic of at least one member of that pack. Maybe I should just go up there myself, I used to live in the valley...so I know my way around.....Maybe if I'm lucky I can take some pics of "Bone" takin a dump and then post them on this site. :chuckle:
-
So if you were out in an area where you thought there was just coyotes you wouldn't take the shot?
-
eastsideBoy and killermiller, Hmmm, how can anyone comment on anything you have said so far? Except to say, you two were really showing your smarts last night. Too much Miller?
-
Trolls are trolls, kind of like wolves are wolves. Feel free to insult my pictures or what I see, I don't have to prove anything to you two. I saw more bulls, bucks, bobcats coyotes and wolves in two half days than you probably have all year. :chuckle: There is more than crappy pics of them, I am sure you are familiar with spotting scopes and watching animals. As I stated before, feel free to shoot as many of them as you'd like. Thos elong legged ones make great pelts. As for the nerve, no, I went to bed. I bet I am feeling better right now than you are.LOL I spent most of my evening posting poor pictures on this website for you to look at. If you are an expert on the valley you should go try to take a few. I'd love to see them.
-
Some people have jobs other than a free online hunting forum. So we dont get all the pics of wolves or uh i mean coyotes.
-
Entiat wolf very mean.
-
On reply #17 look at the animals ears on the far left. Not a wolf!
-
^ yeah that. dodgy. i know for a fact that a 17hmr takes care of those big methow yotes though. lol have any of you locals noticed any "big yotes" up on randevous pass.
-
I agree dwashington, I questioned the profile myself. Problem is, I assume the cute little coyote on the left wouldn't be hanging with the long legged wolves in the middle and the alpha male on the right which obviously is not a coyote. I therefore figured it was one of this years young.
and fishnate, I hope that remark wasn't made for me.
-
First of all in this picture people, Remember 4 of pups are only 8-9 months old. Same size as Coyotes but Long leg. And one with darker color must look like Alpa Male BIG FACE!
I dont understand Scott Fitkin's project. He recollared TWO and Bone said NO COLLARED! Let me correct with you Bone, Did you really look harder? Because Collared is about 4"by 4" Black solid. Hairly could cover it when its winter.
Maybe Mother of this pack arent in Pic. She one of SMARTEST Wolf than ANY you know of. She know when your looking at her pack. She gone! Male should have collared should be able to have Bone to see it but Hairly fuffly might hard to show.
People might not see this pic before TrailCamera Caught up Elbow Canyon in Okanagon County Recently Fall. Pup look smaller A LOT same Coyote but u gotta to see yourself people.
Mulehunter ;)
-
eastsideBoy and killermiller, Hmmm, how can anyone comment on anything you have said so far? Except to say, you two were really showing your smarts last night. Too much Miller?
Wolfbait, why is it that when I say nothing you have to "Attack" like the wolf that you are? Is it "killing for fun"? It is interesting though. As far as the pictures go, I was only interested in seeing if "Bone" had better quality photos, like the Bobcat pics. :) As far as the miller goes, much rather have Busch and Wisers. :P
-
I didn't see any. I tried to pick it out in the pics but couldn't. I spent most of my time trying to get to them though. Idabooner spent a couple hours watching them hunt, frolick and play wolf games and he didn't note a collar. I am not sure if he was looking or not for one. You might be right aboutthe female. Hers is more visible I'd believe. Again, I would have gotten better shots if my family wasn't sitting there waiting for me. I got into ground zero but they were gone. I'd have waited on them and they would have shown back up. Then I could have gotten some better pics.
-
I saw 13 wolves this summer and not a one of them had a collar :dunno: Could be wdfw don't want to many running around with collars that way they can claim that the wolves all migrated here via the red legged wolf trail. ;)
-
No KM, you got what I had. I tried. Family was more pressing as it should be. If I had all winter off, I am sure you'd have gotten better shots by now. Still might. Antlers interest me way more than predators. Even with a cougar tag in my pocket, I'd rather search out and watch huge muledeer. Basically since the wolves have absolutely trimmed the deer population in that area, I don't :waste" much of my time there looking for bucks. It used to be where I would go. I do have a job, I do have family, so my time is limited. You guys see what I see. I don't ration out pics throughout the year, I try to post them as fast as I can. THat being said, I still have a bunch to process and post for you, not of the wolves though. In the meantime, basketball with my girls, and when I do get to the valley visiting with my Father, does have more priority than wildlife. Then when I am home I'll negotiate with the Mrs. for time to post pics for you.
-
Curious about that female Mule. Idabooner thought he saw 8 at one time and my wife swears it. I know Idabooner watched the young male try to get frisky with a female and thats when he put him down and stood over him. I'm not sure how that works out in pack hierarchy inregards to breeding etc. If he would be frisky with a younger female and the alpha would pay that attention, or if the alpha female was there.
The head and shoulders on that alpha male are amazing.
-
Bone, I am glad you arent stupid to shoot. Maybe getting smarter next time if you got to learn where USFWS sitting around in this area. :yike: Jim B (SEGT) WHO LOVES WOLVES PACKS WORKING WITH USFWS to watch this pack HARDER in okanagon County and USFWS get paid FULL TIME watcher all fall and winter to make sure 3rd litter made it! I have passed him three times this winter. I would hate to see you in Court for $600,000.00 FINE for 6 Wolves if you shoot and you might end up 6 years JAIL time depend on JURY! Because Each WOLF you got CAUGHT would be one year jail for one WOLF.
Jim B will WRITE EVERYTHING ON CLOUD ALL OVER IN WASHINGTON ON WHAT YOU DID if you got Caught. I am glad you didnt. :'(
If I was you I wouldnt want to deal with this. Let WDFW deal with this problem! and I have family to be responsible for.
I wouldnt want to scare you people off and stop shoot them but just be careful! Do what you think and THINK TWICE Before you pull TRIGGER! Make sure this area is safe to pull trigger on coyotes. If you shoot Female Collared, USFWS WILL HUNT YOU DOWN! Because they will keep tracking on his collar daily to make sure she is alive. And its only ONE they are following harder and easy to be in right local. If there is 150 Wolves I wouldnt worry. But only one pack. USFWS are sitting at one spot and you might walk by him one day.
Mulehunter :)

Your Pic with a Large Male possible MATCH one of our TrailCamera. Not sure...
Mulehunter
-
I'll have to admit I agree with eastside boy in that I can't look at those pics and say I'm 100% positive those are wolves. My first thought when I saw the pics was it looked like coyotes to me.
-
No worries Mule, you'd lose everything if you shot one of those buggers. In this particular spot there are probably a half a dozen spotters on the hill at any given time. Some of those folks would applaud you, but some would hang you. I'll let Eastside shoot them. If some of these guys are that confident in what they are killing, I say go for it. The Methow could use a few less "coyotes" as well.
I agree Lowe, if I saw the one to the left and he was by himself, I'd probably be in prison now. Kinda spooky really.

Well "*censored*" you apparently have seen more wolves than I have...I'll give ya that for guessing I suppose. The other critters.....I wouldn't be so sure....how would you know what I have or haven't seen anyway? See......just a bunch more useless guess work. :pee: As for your PICS....I didn't say they were all poor, just suprising you posted those inplace of the high quality pics you usually post? Also...never said I was an expert in the valley, just that I could find my way around....maybe you should go back and read that post???? :dunno:

I read them several times trying to find your point. Guess I missed it.

:chuckle: Enjoy New Year! I gotta go Hunt in Idaho! :hello:
Mulehunter ;)

Pretty simple to figure out........I'll just assume there is something wrong with you. :chuckle:

Good luck on that big cat. The west side has more wolves than the east side, so I think you are smart. You should find one in the place I gave you. The elk and muledeer filter in there and the cats like the rock. It gets good sun exposre so the snow is pretty good in there.
-
:chuckle: Enjoy New Year! I gotta go Hunt in Idaho! :hello:

Damn....wish I was doing the same thing. Happy New Year :)
-
something wrong with you.
That would be safe to assume. If you do decide to put your "local" knowledge to the test and take a gun along to shoot some yotes, I'd at least advise some discretion. ;)
-
Personally I think they're cool pics, cool story about watching them, and thanks to the two posters (Idabooner, Boneaddict) for posting both. It's really nice to see this stuff since I'm one of the unlucky ones stuck in an office in Seattle. Keep 'em coming.

What in the hell is going one here....im not sure...whats up with these post!. Bone...nice pics and thanks for sharing. Christ almighty! If you dont have a zoom and can't meet the standards of your critics...its 100%fake? WFT? Don't know you from Adam brother!, and i don't care if your an admin.... I enjoy your pics, your honesty and your carichtor sepperates you form most in my book.....keep shooting us pics and insight!
-
hopefully they will catch pnemonia from those bighorn sheep in the yakima canyon.
-
:chuckle: No doubt. They should add a little parvo to those dead sheep and deliver a christmas snack pack to the pack.
Thanks broken arrow, I plan too.
-
Damn makes you wish you hadn't shared with them guys. They don't remember I had at least one in the spotting scope for over 2 hours. (first post) I've only seen a few wolves but Lived with coyotes my whole life, killed a load of them through the years. I may not know what a wolf looks like but I damn sure know a coyote, and those weren't coyotes.
-
I would ignore the complainers, have they posted any wolf photos? :dunno:
Keep up the good work.....I enjoy seeing everyone's photos. :)
Anyone with much knowledge of canadian wolves and coyotes know that wolf packs are territorial and they kill coyotes, they do not run together. Look at the tails raised in the photos, wolves carry their tail that way, coyotes do not, also coyotes have trimmer bodies, I had no doubts when I saw these photos. :twocents:

No kidding. What is up East side boys rear end? What a crappy attitude. :dunno:

I think someone left the door to the tool shed open and he got out.
-
You guys are all wrong, all I see are yotes.
:yeah: :mor:
ICEMAN....I guess my bad attitude started when I agreed with you!!! :chuckle:
-
Bad attitude? Why does'nt anybody else have a bad attitude, like when people ask for help on a hunt and everybody jumps there case cause they only have 2 posts. Isnt this a hunting forum? These people dont get pitched crap. :kneel:

I think someone left the door to the tool shed open and he got out.
:chuckle: :chuckle:I love it!!!! seriously....that is pretty funny. :)

Eastside, I was kidding about seeing coyotes. Nothing wrong with joking around a bit, we all do it, it just seemed like you are really head hunting in my opinion. Read your last posts on this topic, all on the attack it seemed to me.
Fishnate, I have been put in my place for a bit of negativism a time or two.

nice pics bone. mustav been cool too see them

Look like my sled dogs!! I lost them a few weeks back!! the door on my van jarred open and they all escaped out there!!

Huh good one!!!! You really got me there :chuckle: :chuckle: Hope you did not injure your brain after you strained it coming up with that. Oh......and I really don't need to be straightened out on the wolf issues......maybe if you would read a little more carefully, then you would see that my posts do not carry a pro wolf stance. Not being able to positively identify those canines with those type of pics was the point that was suppose to be put out there. But, unfortunately what is happening is that there are varying severity's in cases of cranial rectosis among some of you....therefore the point will never get through to some.

Some of that may be partially because of reputation, which you seem to resent that I might have one, or in fact some of the other members like Idabooner. I tend to call a spade a spade, don't tend to exaggerate, and tend to be fairly successful in the outdoors. People actually get to know me. I notice you keep referring to your previous posts that you may not have inferred something or said something, yet everyone seems to interpret what you are saying to be something else. Is that sort of like the boyscout marching backwards in the parade and everyone else is wrong but backwards Johnny is perfect. You can come out and say they aren't wolves. You can come out and say the pictures suck and I wish their were better ones. you don't have to hide behind piss poor wit, smiley faces of monkeys pissing on my name etc. It is fine to disagree even if I am an administrator. it generally isn't fine to call everyone dorks or *censored*es or whatever your term was. Sorry your opinion doesn't mean enough for me to go look again to see what term you used. I knew what Iceman was saying but somehow most have no clue what you are saying. As for the quality of pics, if you understood animal behavior, (such as bearpaw) and looked at the big picture, instead of one animal to the left, and even trust someone that might know something, you'd understand. Instead......you basically made a fool of yourself, and guess what reputation you will have from now on. :dunno:

I was trying to decide how stupid I was. Trying to get in the middle of a wolf pack WHILE they were hunting. A .357 tucked in my coat pocket. I guess its a 6 shooter. The 7th or 8th I'd have to beat with the camera I guess. :)
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

another excuse for you to get a bigger lens. ;)

:chuckle: :chuckle: :yeah:

Yep you right, I don't want to be too close to that pack. I might not want to trade my .44 mag after reading all 8 pages :chuckle: or maybe I do, so I can have more then 6 shots :chuckle: Great Job Bone! I love it!

Could these be the same pack of wolves?

No, not at least that I know of. There is no country that looks like that that I know of anywhere near them, just that alone.
-
If you have the original of that you should blow it up or crop it before reducing and we'd be able to see the critters better. You'd get more grain.....cool picture though.

I'll stick with bone here . his work stands alone amoungst all of us hacks . If he said he saw wolves then thats good enough for me . hell I cant get any photos near his quality. If those were yots then they must be some deer eat'n critters with legs like that . I guress if we had more black wolves they would easyier to pick out ( all part of the depts master scem to cover up wolves as yotes ) . I've spent a lot of time in the woods and only seen two wolves . there elusive and to get any photo is a act in its self. good work bone
-
Bone, I am proud to know of you and your dad, they weren't there yesterday, with a fresh snow. There was a big cougar track there on the road below the gate. ;) Happy New Year guys..Good hunting with a gun, bow or camera.
-
Thanks guys. To think I have a boot tag in my pocket. LOL Dang cat is going to have to work for a meal in that country.
-
Bone what kinda of ride do you have? Your $$ for gas must be unbelievable with the 4 corners of the state you cover... Tell me you have an old Subaru that gets 30mpg, or a Toyota Hilux Diesel 4x4 that gets 35mph or something... :bash: BTW Hilux are only available over seas and Canada... Diesel is bad for the environment! :bash:

In NZ and Australia most hunters are driving 4 door crew cab diesel toyota hilux pickups, great mileage (35ish) and you can seat 4 people. I thought about buying one and shipping it over. Can't be that bad on the environment, or NZ would nebver allow them. Over there, half the autos on the road are diesel.
-
I have customers in BC that have imported them in from japan... Unfortunately in the infinite wisdom of some bureaucrat you cant import them into the USA... You could import he motor and put it into a Toyota, but that could be quite the ordeal... Europe and Asia has made great strides in diesel technology and have embraced it. I think there are too many groups that are against it in the US from auto unions, Ethanol crowd, oil producers/refiners etc.. I know in one case where ford currently produces a diesel in Europ for the focus that is kick ass... But the union has it tied up so they can't import it... Everyone playing the CYA game.. the only way to buy a complete diesel rig and import it it has to be 20-25 years old to qualify as a collectible. :bash:

Thanks for the pics Bone!
Good or bad, I like seeing your pictures :hello:

I was on the lookout for long legged coyotes today but only found the short legged version. Coincidentally, everywhere where people have spotted wolves, there aren't any deer. :(

you were suppose to wait till febuary ;), cool pics

I think you should shoot another wolf.

I thought about shooting a 300 pound white one. I have no idea what kind of dog that was but it was big. I knew I had found my first Yeti. The treehugger tagging along behind looked like a hostage though.

Won't be long till the shredded spandex competitions start. Comparing from state to state which bunny humpers got ripped up the worst. :yike: Won't take long when the prey starts running real low, wonder what will then be on defenders of wdfw web site, "Woods Closed due to Wolf Slaying's" or "carry big stick, but do not hurt the wolves"! :bfg:

Pretty sweet find Idabooner/Bone. From reading your post and from our talks during my visit, I can guess where they are at.
I am excited to see them one of these days... ;)
Thanks for posting Idabooner~!

I would bring my lattes over and watch wolves with Idabooner and Bone any day if I could. Instead I just enjoy the pics, lol.
Thank you both

The wolves were back and made a kill this morning, I just missed the take down by a few minuets. I had at least one wolf in the scope for 1 hour and 55 minuets. There were 4 total, no collars, I will number them by peck order so it's easier to keep track of their activity's.
As the sun comes up and hits the open side hill it's very easy to see whats over there from my big window so every morning I check it out, the deer have been gathering a few more every day for a week, the green is just starting to show as the snow melts. I talked to Boneaddict the other day and he told me when he tangled with the wolf a few years ago the deer were in a tight bunch, from prior experience I've been watching for the eagles.
I spotted the deer, 38 of them in a loose bunch up in the rocky part that I never seen them graze in before, there was a lot of hill to the left that they are usually on but not this morning, with the bino's I rechecked my count and was putting them away when I notice an eagle circling straight across, and sitting there was a wolf #2 big as day, I screemed at my wife to set the spotting scope up, 50 ft. around to the right was #1 ripping on a deer carcass, in a while #2 kept edging up until #1 accepted him at the kill, about that time #3 showed up but stayed back. Soon there was 3 bald and one golden eagles, lots of magpies and ravens harassing the wolves, a wolf would make a run at the eagle and some one else would get a few bites before he got back. #1 made a run at the golden which gave him some trouble, #2 got a big chunk of meat and went down hill with it but the eagles gave him so much trouble he carried it around the hill 200 yds. to a thick brushy creek bottom behind a guys house. #3 had managed to get a smaller piece away and eat some of it before one of two eagles got it. #4 had showed up by now, #1 got what looked like a quarter, It was big and had a leg and hoof on it, he carried it into the same brush to get away from the birds. #3 and #4 were ripping on what was left along with fighting with the eagles, #3 got a big chunk and headed for the brush, the golden eagle claimed the carcass, #4 would make a run at him but couldn't win by himself so he just went towards the brush and sit on the hill while the birds got their fill. A wolf, #2? come out of the brush and chased #4 around on the hill awhile, finally went to the kill, the eagles were full by that time and let him claim it, after awhile #4 kept getting closer until he was accepted, the two made short work of what was left and wondered back to the brush, the eagles carried what looked like pieces of guts off and the smaller birds took over. I had to be gone for an hour, when I got back there was nothing I could see with the spotter, not even a magpie. Sure wish Boneaddict could have been here with his camera.
The brush is so thick where the wolves took the carcass to get away from the birds no man would ever go there so nobody would ever find the bones from the kill. That explains to me why, a few years ago I watched 2 wolves work a deer out of the bunch and herd it into the creek bottom before they made the kill, they were very methodical about it and I couldn't figure why.
-
Well, we almost predicted them showing up. If I hadn't been working, I would have been in the valley today. UNREAL! Maybe I'll get lucky one of these days. I have an idea where they were at from your description. *censored*S! NEAT that you got to watch it all unfold. I'd love to get a photo of a big golden flaring at a wolf. PRICELESS.
-
Thats AWESOME Idabooner. I wish I could have seen it. I bet your view was great from that big window there. Thanks for the write up. Take care buddy.
-
i am glad we don't see them like that or somthing bad might happen 8)

eastside boy, if Boneaddict says those are wolves than they are wolves. Considering he has been a member of this site from the beginning and has 2 1/2 years on you. He has formed a reputation on this site.
Well.......what do you think the odds are that they are actually Wolves, anything less than 100% is B.S.
So considering you were not there to see these coyotes through the spotting scope and take the pictures "in person" can you 100% say these are coyotes? If not than anything less than 100% is BS!
You sure are trolling. Makes me wonder what your problem is? You fall off the top bunk and hit your head? Or is it just pure entertainment for you to stir the pot and call people out that you don't even know? Are you trying to prove something with all your smarty pants comments? Hey Idabooner, Thanks for your time share with your story. I WISH I were up THERE! Had a lot thing to do around our home. :'( I notice you said four but supposed to be 7 ??? I hope something happen to those three! :chuckle:

Wow, I missed this thread somehow. Interesting. Hope you can get some good close pics of them sons a you know whats. Look like wolves to me !! I wish I was wrong though.

I'd actually love for someone to show me a picture of a coyote with its tail up flapping in the wind. I've yet to see that in my lifetime. LOL I am miserable that I wasn't up there this weekend, but I had to work. Guys are scooping sheds and wolves are killing everything else. MAN
-
mulehunter, when there was 2 wolves on the kill they could pretty much hold the eagles off, but when just one wolf and 1 Golden and 3 Bald the wolf would back down. The wolf made a run at the Golden, they went at it, for a bit it seemed an even match then a bald hit him from behind and the golden would win out. That happened 3 times, each time the wolf backed down quicker and farther from the kill. As the two hours went along it seemed like it depended how much each had had to eat how much they would fight for a spot. Towards the end the eagles were full and just set near by, when all the wolves left the eagles picked up the bigger scraps and flew off. (looked like guts)
-
Thank you for telling the particulars Idabooner.
The brush is so thick where the wolves took the carcass to get away from the birds no man would ever go there so nobody would ever find the bones from the kill.

Hey Idabooner next time you see the wolves across the way give me a call, I have a special camera mounted on the 270, it is designed to make the pictures sharp and clear, with amazing accuracy. February and march is when the wolves are out looking for some love'n, may the eight have split to start new families. At any rate it sounds like you have the ultimate wolf viewing spot.
-
if Boneaddict says those are wolves than they are wolves.
If Idabooner says those are Wolves, I'm gonna buy that too! I believe that it's only a short matter of time before Doug gets good photos himself or sets dad up with a camara/lens capable of the capture.
Do Coyotes kill Deer? You bet, but not normally as a precision hunting team. They are opportunists that will cull out the weak in a herd. The fact that three adult Eagles were present harassing the Wolves is enough to make one feel that the doggies certainly weren't Coyote sized. -As even a large Alpha Coyote is no match for a Golden Eagle. The fact that a hierchy of status was observed when there was one Wolf at the carcas when another Wolf would approach. Coyotes don't hold such status within a pack.
Curious Idabooner, Is this pack hanging out on the southwest side of the highway (153) or north? How many miles between their current kill zone and the Manson Sheep summer grounds?
-Steve
-
Jack I'm sure the ones in the pictures were the Look Out Pack, and the 4 I seen yesterday were part of that pack. A couple months ago when Bone got the pictures, the pack split for over an hour, 4 went off and 3 stayed then the 4 came back and all 7 played around until near dark when they disappeared in the canyon. The alpha male and female went with that 4. Yesterday I didn't think the alpha's were in that 4. However the #1 I described was the boss and a male, he was the only one I seen marking. #4 acted like a male but I'm not sure.
There's others on here that has kept closer track of their range, I believe this pack runs Libby Cr. and over into Buttermilk, Carlton to Twisp. I believe there is a pack in the upper Twist River but don't know the boundaries. There is a pack on Gardner Mt., 9 wolves filed past an outfitter pack string in hunting season about four miles up Wolf Cr.
The wolves we have in the pictures and the ones I watched yesterday were west of 153, near Carlton.
Sorry I'm not familiar with the sheep range.

I have seen this a couple of times. No picture, but occasionally they get them up there. Both times I have seen it is when a single was mousing in an alfalfa field. They were pretty excited and were eating well.

Yeah.. Just like a well grounded family having a good time at board games. :'(
Lets just hope they don't range farther toward the ridges of North and South Navaire. I don't like the fact that we now have to contend with the wolf for deer hunting seasons. But I would hate to see a couple packs of wolves descimate that sheep herd.
I haven't heard of livestock attacks in that area since last fall. I suppose because there's been enough deer in winter range for the wolves to eat, but what happens when the need for food makes the wolves more desparate?
-Steve
-
Thanks for the update Idabooner! Hopefully you won't ever see them again. ;)
-
I am assuming the alphas are denned up along with maybe an extra female. Don't know for sure obviously. I am betting these are subordinates. I'll get them on film one of these days, I promise. I'm working on another group up in the NE corner.
-
Looking forward to the pictures Bone!

Four wolves were back this morning at 7:55. I was watching the deer, they were acting different. There was 12 in a very tight bunch moving up hill together and looking down, I seen movement around and down from them, grabbed the bino's and sure enough four wolves. The wolves were moving in the direction the deer had just come from, the wolves were not on the hunt they didn't pay any attention to the deer. There's a dig, possible old coyote den over there, the wolves collected and was playing grab ass around the hole. Now is my chance to move the spotting scope from the other room, would have been less than one minuet to set up, darn they were gone, I only got to watch them about 5 minuets. They could have gone back up the direction they came from in a small gut or dropped on into the river bottom. The deer stopped and just watched after a while drifting on over the ridge. I scoured the hill side for 45 minuets with bino's but never seen them again.
-
Wow, too bad you didn't have your camera handy too.
-
Wow, too bad you didn't have your camera handy too.
Wish I had a camera, better yet wish Boneaddict or one of the other guys with a big lens could catch them. That must be in the wolves circle, that's the third time this year I've seen them near the same place. And others have seen them when I didn't so their around from time to time.
-
It'd be interesting to put those sightings on a calendar/map. Back in the 80's I kept track of an Elk herd quite extensively. They had a circling route of about 40 miles on a 5-7 day rotation. I couldn't tell you that they were going to be on hillside 'A' on Tuesday, but I could say that they'd be there some time between Monday and Wednesday afternoon for much of the year. They were smart enough not to eat all the food at any given location and then move on. Their patterns did adjust for food and seasons, but it wasn't too hard to find them any given time. I'm sure that these Wolves are certainly as smart, as they will follow the food. Deer may be the number one part of the diet, so expect them to follow Deer patterns as they move. But if Deer herds are relatively stationary, Do the Wolves in a pack with a home den, have a pattern to follow ranging out from that den? It would be interesting to see how they start ranging farther out from the den as food sources dimminish.
-Steve
-
Well Ida your right there in Gods country!! Too bad the wolves are there also
-
Trust me Jack, I am keeping track.
-
Just talked to two of my neighbors, they watched the 4 wolves for over an hour just sitting up on the ridge before they come down, I first seen them coming down. Dang missed a lot.
-
Wow Dang I missed part of story, Very Cool... Wish I am up there!

More wolves this morning. As the sun hit the hill approximately 7:45, I thought the deer were placed different than normal. My gut told me to grab the bino’s and take a look, soon I spotted #2, #3, and #4 wolves standing together at attention looking into a sharp draw that I couldn’t see the very bottom of. I quickly set up the scope and about that time a cougar came charging out on the tail of #1 wolf, they went about a 100 feet then the other 3 wolves joined in and they put the cat at bay, then circling and charging in at it they made the cat start backing up, about 10 minuets of this they had the cat backed past the kill ( I’m sure it was the cats kill) and it turned and ran with the wolves on it’s tail to a lone pine tree, it treed and 3 wolves kept it up the tree while #1 went to the kill and drug the deer AROUND a very steep side hill for 30 feet (this would have been very hard for a man to do, it took several minuets) the deer rolled once, (I could see it was completely intact) (the only reason I can think of would be to get the carcass out in the open so they could claim it easier) It must have taken #1 about an hour to get her fill and get back so #2 could eat which didn’t take so long until he got back and #3 & #4 could eat together, they didn’t eat long until #1 started to leave, #2 followed her and then #3, they were strung out a mile when they all stopped and the back two come back slowly waiting for #4 which was still eating, #1 continued on around the hill to never be seen again. #2 (a male) took over the kill and soon got a BIG chunk loose and carried it around the hill ½ mile before he was out of sight, soon #3 followed with a big chunk. The three carried meat for an hour (5 loads) always on the same path and always leaving one at the kill so the cat couldn’t get any. A couple times one would make a run at the tree like the cat might have started down. I could only see the cat part of the time in the limbs. Finally the three just lied down near the cat tree watching, once they suddenly made a run at the tree, #2 going clear in while the other two hung back a little. After a long while the wolves just wondered up over the hill out of sight. I put my full attention on the tree for 20 minuets and about decided the cat must have slipped out when I seen a limb move more than the wind, soon the cat jumped out and went to where the kill was then up to where the kill had started from, about that time another cat come out of the tree and joined her, then another cat appeared from some place. It was a mother and two 2-3 year old kittens. There was absolutely nothing left for them to eat so they wondered up over the hill probably to make another kill some place. It was 11:50 when the cats went out of sight so this was a long watch.

How did I not see this post this morning.. :bash:
Idabooner.. Boneaddict... I've really been thinking about coming over there for a few days in the next couple of weeks. I've got some vacation to burn. -And I mean burn, as I'm over the limit for what I can carry into next year, and well.. With this government job, I'm still acrueing more daily. Anyway to get to the point, as soon as that pass is open, I wanna come watch doggies. As crazy as that sounds, as much as I hate the thought of them damn wolves in the hills killing deer, I want to learn as much as I can about them. Even if only watching them for a couple hours by chance one time. -And I'm NuckinFutz. I'll go walking that hillside looking for sheds! (I'll be packin!) Is that ridge/hillside public or private land? How's that area accessed.
Is there anywhere I can pull my camp trailer into, near, with view of that ridge? I've got a video camera to bring too.
PM or email, please.

Jack, the land where I been seeing the wolves is all private, and the guy is very touchy about anybody getting close. There is a big area of public land connecting on the north side with access. By then there will be public land out from under the snow where you could park your trailer and have a short drive. Or if you could lay out and be in a good position come first light. I would gladly point you in the right direction.

Idabooner, Wow... I am stuck at work today! I wish I am up there FOR SURE! I am sure Deer Population is going to be UGLY Soon! :bash: Hey I wonder if you can see the Mother of Pack her body getting THIN from born pups most recently?

Mulehunter, I have lots of questions, actually the females body looked heavy, about ready to have pups, or already did and has really bagged up and then full of meat for the pups? She was the one that drug the deer around level on that steep hill, seems she wouldn't do that with a bunch of pups in her.

Ugh... I'd be forced to respect a land owners wishes I guess. I still wanna come over there once the pass is open and take a look see.. I'll see what I can fit in with the boys sports schedule. I'm taking some time off one way or the other. I'd really like to watch those doggies even if its spotting scope distances.

If you guys know that much about the pack and aren't sharing pics your holding out! :bash:
-
Wow sounds like that was pretty intense. To bad you didn't have a video camera or camera :bash: Awsome read. Thanks
-
Amazing..Idabooner. You have witnessed something unusual. Thanks for sharing.
-
I especially like how Idabooner references the hierarchy or apparent status of each of the doggies he's witnessing.
-Steve
Hey, I wonder if Fitkin is reading this thread?
-
Idabooner you missed your calling you should have been a sports comintater you have had everyone on the edge of there seats. Good write up hope bone can get them on film for you thanks for keeping us all informed.
-
Thank's for the complements guys. If I see them again I'll let you know. There's getting to be a lot of green area so the deer will scatter out and the wolves will move back with them, then soon to the fawning areas.
-
Hmmm?... Would it be illegal to 'protect' the fawns? :dunno: :chuckle: :dunno:
-Steve
-
Don't worry about the fawns, they are YOUNG and STRONG, the wolves won't bother them.
