Title: Scope issue-Maxed out left

Equipment
Rifle: Savage Model 93R17
Caliber: 17 HMR
Old Scope: Cabela's Pine Ridge 3-9x50
New Scope: Cabela's Pine Ridge Tactical .17 6-18x40

I had a 3-9x50 Pine Ridge scope on my 17 HMR. It has been on the rifle for about 10 months, and I was getting good groups at 100 yards. Since this is just a plinker rifle for the range, I decided that I wanted a bit more magnification so I swapped it out for the 6-18x40 Tactical scope that Cabelas sells (also a pine ridge)

I did not swap out the bases or rings, I removed the old scope, and put the new one on. I don’t have a 17 cal bore slighter so I sighted down the bore at the range on the 50 yard target. The scope was set up to shoot way right. After playing around, I thought I had it close (17 cal holes are hard to see even at 50 yards). I did three five shot groups on my target, and upon investigation, found I was hitting the far right side of my buddies target to my right (great groups, but 2-3 feet to the right). After working it to the left, I was able to get it to within 3 inches of center (still hitting right) at 50 yards. At this point, my L/R dial is maxed out to the left and I cannot get it to move any more.

The bases I have do not have an adjustment on them, and since I cannot move the dials any further left, I am at a loss as to how to correct this.

Any ideas? At this point, I am pretty sure I will return the new scope, for a replacement in hopes it is a scope issue. But before I go through that hassle, I’d like to see if there is a simple way to fix my issue.

Post by: TEX-X on December 29, 2009, 09:17:03 AM: maybe adjust the scope all the way the opposite direction.... tap on the adjustment screws and try to get it sighted in again.... i had a scope on a savage rifle that i had adjust all the way one way and it was still off... so i went back the other way and then started from scratch... i also like to give the adjustment screws a tap... maybe something is hanging up but it's something to give a try unless someone else can chime in with a better explanation

Post by: longrange7mm on December 29, 2009, 09:44:22 AM: Take it all the way right COUNT YOUR CLICKS then go back dead center! re sight in if that dont work you need a set of adjustable rings. my old 7mm did the same thing when i pulled the swarovski the huskemaw shot way left. so i got rid of my talleys and put leupold adjustables on it! :twocents:

Post by: Rob on December 29, 2009, 10:05:23 AM: Cool, thanks for the input. I'll try re-bore sighting wth the ideas above, and then move to adjustable rings if that fails. I shodu problaby go with lower rings anyway since I moved from 50 mm to 40.

Post by: bobcat on December 29, 2009, 10:41:01 AM: I'm wondering if your rings are not aligned correctly. If the scope is slightly bent it can affect the adjustments. I would consider having a gunsmith remount the scope.

Before I did that I'd take the scope off and check my rings. I have even turned a ring around and had it change POI.

I might think it was screwed up rings or bases if this was the first scope on them, but since I pulled a good scope off and put replaced it with this one, I'm inclined to think it is a scope issue. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that I screwed up perfectly good rings/bases in the remounting process though.

Seen it a bunch of times. And this will fix it 100% of the time. If there isn't something wrong with the scope.
