Title: S&W M&P 9mm
Post by: CoryTDF on January 03, 2010, 08:11:52 AM
I just went to the range to qualify for work. This year we switched to the S&W M&P 9mm and I have to tell you I really like it. It is pretty much a Glock with a S&W stamp, but I really like it. I shot 496 out of 500, if anybody has done a correctional officer qualification you know what that means. Anyway, I like the gun a lot it shoots nice and at 10 yards I put 15 shots into a hole a little bigger than a golfball. I'll be buying one for sure.

We too switched to S&W M&P (40 cal.) and I'm noticeably more accurate with it then the H&K and Beretta.  I don't like the stiff slide release though.

Should be teaching the gross motor skill of slide manipulation with the offhand.

That being said I did a T&E on the S&W M&P in .45 and 9mm this year, was pleasantly supprised in the quality and reliability.  Also the accuracy was good as well.  We ended up not going to it do to the overall cost of replacing our glocks with the current budget constraints.

It is stiff but as mentioned above off hand should be used to operate that. I do wish they would have made the mag release on both sides so that it was an truly ambidextrous weapon.

That was a problem I had as well.  I understand there are not that many lefties but an ambi mag release would be the cats meow on a production gun.  Same issue with our glocks.  I can teach a cross eyed dominate shooter but mag change manipulation with a left side only mag release is a pain in the butt.  It adds to many unecasary movements and lefties are behind the curve in speed in mag changes.

20 years of using the slide release - I'm getting used to using the slide manipulation now because of the M&P - I still don't like it though.  I have large hands and don't have to break my grip to hit the slide or magazine release. Slide manipulation is what my department is teaching ( I agree that it's best for most.)  Using my reactionary hand to manipulate the slide takes MORE TIME for me.
