Howdy
I just got back from Alabama where they have pretty liberal hunting seasons, bag limits and weapon choices. All of my cousins are into spear hunting deer and hogs. They tried to get me to try it but I didn't have the time to practice to be comfortable enough to do it. I wound up taking my "10 pointer" with a shotgun from a treestand. Have any of you killed a deer with a spear and how was it?

I used to joke about it... I should have known it would just be a matter of time before it became a legitimate sport.. :dunno: Before long there will be spear hunting "purests", who will claim you are a technology whore if you kill your deer with anything else...
Did they use atlatls, or just a spear?

Nope, not even sure what states allow it. I have seen it on Youtube. I imagine it would never fly in this state. Could you imagine what happened in Concrete but with spears.
How does your family hunt them out of tree stands?

They make their own spears out of oak and stainless steel and hunt them out of treestands. It is illegal to bait in Alabama and the ground is covered with leaves making it impossible to sneak up on a deer. They find a scrape line along a good trail, hang a stand and wait it out. It was in the lower 20's this week so I was the only one brave enough to hunt in the "cold", which was a mistake since I wound up with a major sinus infection that sent me to the hospital. I got my "10 pointer" with a shotgun just at daylight and while I was gutting him out my sinuses locked up on me so badly that I damn near didn't make it to the house. While my Dad took me to the hospital my cousins took care of the buck. I gave them the meat for doing that for me and brought back the head. I am going to have to try that whole spear chucking thing next year!

interesting video. Didn't look like it penetrated that elk very deeply. Must have done the job though. Got any pictures of that Crimson Tide buck Polarbear?

Dang sounds like a gnarly cold you had their, gald you made it out alive

I think I heard that to use an atlatl you have to demonstrate your proficiency. Wouldn't mind that sometimes here.... The proficiency demonstration, that is.

i have never killed anything but i have 2 hand made spears, also several hand made atlatal's that i have played with. tim wells is a great spear hunter i have seen him take several buff's and hogs with his spear his first one was a old javilin from college i think. now he uses cold steel spears. i have his video's and there is like 4 or 6 spear hunts on them and more on his new one when he puts them out. if it was legal and i could get a good downward 10-15 yard throw i would have no prob with it at all i mess with them allot.

When I was a little shaver I remember taking rabbits and grouse with a spear and throwing sticks. Was back in the 70's and being a youngster I did not understand the weapon restrictions back then, if there was any. Never thought about taking a big game animal with one. I've been close enough several times but without a treestand it would be tuff.

Uh, ok. And you probably won't be a "man" after you try it either. You may be a "meal". Possibly a "statistic". Most likely you will be a "requested set of dental records"... but you probably won't be a "man"..
