Title: elk viewing in Teanaway?
Post by: beardown on January 10, 2010, 05:40:47 PM
Anybody know any areas in the Teanaway or somewhere around there to look at some big bulls right now?  Doesnt seem like there is enough snow to push them down yet. Saw a few yesterday but they were all small.

Why don't you try the other side of I-90, where they feed the elk. Joe Watt Canyon.

They are certainly spread out up there and high.  They are still on the top of Blewitt.   feeding stations are even "lacking" them.  I'm not sure why we are even feeding them.

I will have to check out Joe Watt Canyon.  Is that near Cle Elum?   I live in Shelton so we drove down to Oak creek and checked out the sheep and the elk down there, but I would like to see some Teanaway Bulls to see what I couldve got with my rut tag and do some crying :)

Most of the Teanaway bulls cross over into the Clock/Naneum or stay on private land where they aren't reasonably accessed by most people.  I won't reveal where they come onto the Clock as that would get me shot very quickly.  Last checked they weren't there yet.  Most of the bulls are hanging high, even in the Yakima.   there ARE some of the oldtimers who come down whether there is 2 inches of snow or 3 feet.  The stations are your best bet.

I heard there were over 70 large branch bulls at oak creek this week.

That would really surprise me, unless this weather this weekend brought them in.  I would doubt it.  I'll try to get there this week to confim for you folks.  I usually like to photgraph the count this time of year, usually last week and compare to past years at this time.  Girls basketball has taken precedence this year for me though.

We saw maybe 15-20 bulls that would break the 300 mark at about 10 am this morning at oak creek, but they feed them at 1:30 and there could be more

Dave, what are you complaining about?  Your Rut Tag Bull is a really nice bull. :IBCOOL:  Esp. if memory serves correctly, you guys weren't seeing the ones that you did when you were scouting.  Yes there may be some bigger ones in there, but when you have a very small window to hunt.  And who knows exactly where bigger bull may have migrated or got chased from.

It could have been worse.  You could be eating Rut Tag Stew, instead of Elk Stew.

There are a couple decent bulls hanging on Lambert road next to a guys house b/c he feeds them, other than that i think most of the bulls are still up high, not the snow like we usually have to push them all down, the elk that were down in the fields seem to have left.

saw one whopper during the late cow hunt, but he was the only one, and I don't think you want to go where we were  :yike:

I was at Joe watt last week, saw about 200 head as well and not a single bull, they feed around 8 a.m. i was there around 2 p.m. could be the reason for not seeing any bulls, the elk were scattered up the far ridges as well.  Very little snow, i imagine most of the big bulls are up really high, no need for them to come down.

I tried to hit it this weekend and it was so foggy I couldn't see anything.  I drive by there a lot, though, and I'm not seeing nearly the elk up on the hillsides that I normally see.  Hardly any snow...
