Title: My new cage trap
Post by: Kain on January 12, 2010, 08:23:58 PM
My wife was talking to friend about me getting into trapping and they mentioned they had a trap they would sell for cheap.  It is a Humaneway trap and I got it for $20.  It seems like a decent trap but I wouldnt recommend buying one because they support HSUS on their site.

I got it set up beside my garage.  I have a bunch of stray cats and a raccoon in the neighborhood so I loaded it up with some sardines.  :dunno:

If your trap is on the ground I hope you have it covered!!!  If your only after cats and coons get it up off the ground, even a foot and a half is plenty to keep the skunks out.  When you do catch your feral cats, dispose of them quietly, you might find out the hard way they were feral after all.  It's a pain you do not want to experience.  Good luck!

I will try raising the trap after this weekend if I dont have any luck.  I live in the city and dont have any skunks here.  Just the occasional raccoon or opossum. The cats are not feral they are stray, as in on my property and I dont own any.  The pound is very close so I will probably just go drop them off there.

if you think you don't have any skunks because you live in the city, you may be in for a big stinkey surprise.

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  I trapped 30+ skunks last year, ALL of them were in the city and I would say 15 of them came off of property that the owners did not know there were any skunks in the area... :dunno:..Just saying.....

It would be cool....unless your trap is un-covered....I only speak from extensive first hand knowledge.  :)  You become part of bomb disposal.  :)

Just make sure you are legal, you need food and water in the humane trap from what I was told by humane society!Especially now that you have advertised what you are doing!I did the same thing with all the stray cats,I caught a few neighbors cats and had a lot of neighbors mad at me! :bdid:

My Dad when he was alive used to relocate the feral cats in his neighbor hood. Either by coming over to visit me with the kitty in a gunny sack after he had caught it and then parking next to my dog kennel. He would untie the sack and come in and visit, when the kitty got free of the sack and jumped to freedom next to the kennel and then my dog's went off I would go hush the dog's. He kept this a secret for several years. But I do have to admit it was a great idea. So then he started relocating them to the local pound in the same gunny sack. The pound is full of helpful people but when he took them up there he would always offer a pair of gloves to the person. When asked how he caught them he would say carefully!!!!! :IBCOOL:

Too friggin bad about them being mad!  Humane society doesn't know crap about anything, I wouldn't believe a word they say.  The only reason I would bring one of the little pos's to the humane society would be to cost them and the owner some money.

Your cat is in my yard, it is vermin and I WILL kill it just as I would a skunk, coon, opossum or whatever other vermin didn't belong there.  I will not torture it, however tempted I might be, but it will be dispatched nonetheless.  The trap would not be visible from outside of my property however.

If I let my dogs do what people allow their cats to do I would be fined, what's up with irresponsible cat owners?  And, make sure your neighbors have their cats liscensed, cat's are supposed to be, if dogs are, in most jurisdictions.

Traps are a lot of work...here is a bad idea I do not recommend, sneak cat food over to your neighbors porch at night then the cats/skunks/coons become their problem, unless you like your neighbors in which case we're back to trapping.  :tung: :bdid:

I have chickens and can demonstrate they are after them....  Any animal, domestic or not killing or attempting to kill my livestock is fair game.

I will probably check around for lost cat signs to see if there are any rewards :chuckle: if not I will take them to the pound.  I have a few bird feeders out that birds and squirrels visit.  I like them a lot more than the cats that run around.  I have one neighbor next door that his cat gets out sometimes but he tries to keep it indoors.  It has a collar and is well taken care of.  If I end up catching his cat I will just take it home.  I can check the trap a couple times a day so the cats wont be neglected or left for long periods of time.

Kain,  Have you caught anything in that trap yet? Was it still there in the morning?  I bought 4 of those traps from a NWCO in Buckley who was going out of buisiness; now I know why he went out of buisiness.  The cage itself is very sturdy and its a nice size, but the latch is ridiculous. There is a metal tab on the bottom which is supposed to keep the door from swinging all the way back after it fires. The metal tab is too flimsy and the door swings past it. Then the coon just pulls the door open and leaves after his meal! I really hate to educate coons like that. It works a little better after bending the tab up, but it's still not 100%.

Nothing yet but I know what you mean about the tab.  Luckily mine is very secure.  I didnt torque on it but it seemed solid enough.  Wholesale Sports has these traps at their store and the smaller one I looked at the latch was was like you described.  I knew I wasnt getting a great trap when I got it but it will do fine on kitties and small coons.

I got a house cat this morning.   :chuckle: :rockin:  No collar not tags.  Took him around to all the close neighbors to see if he belonged to any of them.  Didnt find the owner so took a trip to the pound.  I put him in a pet carrier which was real easy cause he was a sweet cat.  Was purring the whole time.  Almost feel bad hope the owners find him.
