Title: What is the best way to find a (insert your breed)Chesapeake Bay Retriever?
Post by: Special T on January 14, 2010, 04:25:37 PM: When bought my last chessie 11years ago I found him in the Little Nickle... Craig's list doesn't post ads for pets. I put an email in to the ACC district guy for suggestions, Thought I'd ask you guys how did you found you hunting partner. I don't have anything against breeders, but I got my last dog from a family with kids that had 2 chessies.. I'm on the search... thanks

I know all of the breeders who compete or breed competition Chessies in Washington and many other states. I'd be happy to steer you in the right direction. I know of two nice breedings which should have happened or will be happening very soon. One in Stanwood, the other in Missouri.(my pups breeder)

With backyard breeders your really rolling the dice on hips, health, temperment, and hunting potential. Good luck and I hope you find an excellent Chessie. Costs just as much to feed a poor hunting dog as it does the feed an excellent one. :)

Post by: Chessie_Guy on January 14, 2010, 07:04:16 PM: There are some good breeders here in Washington. My male, Reagan, is from MarJans kennels; they are in Seattle and Lakewood. Great dogs, great lines. My boy has good instincts, drive, and has an overarching desire to do what you want him to (desire to learn). His only limitation is me as a trainer. I am sure MarJans will have litters dropping this spring.

Another good breeder, who has a foundation stud from MarJans btw, is Cle Elum Chesapeakes. They have a good program and, from what I've heard, very good dogs.

Both of the above are reputable, ethical, and responsible breeders. The ladies who are MarJans basically run the Evergreen CBR Club.

The Stanwood breeding, which Happy Gilmore mentioned, is probably NorDom. Excellent, excellent breeder of high-drive, very successful HT/FT dogs. My only concern with their dogs was that they are high-drive dogs...all the time. I need a dog that can chill in the house (like my two are right now).

I'm not looking to win any competitions, just a good hunting companion dog. My last dog was my first hunting dog. He was a better hunter than I was a trainer. Only made a few mistakes in the training so I feel pretty good about it the second go around.
Do you guys think its easier to train a female or male? I was kind of leaning in the direction of a female..

Post by: Rowdy on January 15, 2010, 09:44:37 AM: Research, research, research... Go to field trials, hunt tests, training days and ask about the dogs you like. If you want something specific, it's out there. I spent a year talking to breeders, dog owners, watching dogs work, and asking alot of questions. It paid off, I ended up with exactly what I wanted. Funny thing is I now know that I want something slightly different next time but I see it as part of the process.

Good Luck, I had a ton of fun doing my search, met alot of good people and saw alot of really good dogs.

When Marges Butter(correction, I think it was Bess, can't remember now) died, I went to Marges and picked up Butter to take her to the vet. She was probably the grand-dam to your dog. I've know all of Janice's and Marge's dogs since 2000.

I'm guessing that my friend Matt has a littermate to your dog. Matt will be running in Senior Hunter level this season at the hunt tests.

Stephanie in Cle Elum has Boone. I have spent many, many days training their female Callie(my first Chessies older sister) and Boone. They lived at the ranch where I worked in Thorp. Mike and I trained 2X a day then and hunted more together. Her husband Mike works in Mill Creek. Stays at my house occasionally when he's working OT. Boone has some great attributes in the field although, they don't train for field work or hunt anymore. I ran Boone in his last hunt test two years ago and he passed.

Norene's (Nordom) dogs are hunting dogs first. Marge and Jan breed primarily for show and conformance. Nothing wrong with either but, it makes difference in the field. Norene's dogs are very well behaved and if you look at their titles you will find show(CH.) obedience and Master Hunters. Nordom has made more AKC Master Hunter Chesapeakes than anyone in the United States. They have been breeding Chessies longer than anyone in Washington State.

Clayton Evans in Chewelah also has some nice Chessies. I wouldn't hesitate to talk with him either. He's made quite a few Master Hunter labs and Chessies and knows dogs well.

I've watched every Chessie from practically every breeding around Washington State work in the field from newbie hunt test runners to seasoned pro trainers. I can give you a pretty good estimation of temperment, drive and trainability. I'm always happy to talk dogs, especially Chessies.

Bought the dog from a duck hunter, chessie enthusiast and ex-military guy... He's retrieving and fitting in great. Didn't break the bank either... Feels good to be excited about a dog, not just missing my old one...

A fellow hunter and retired army guy got into chessies because his unckle had one on his california rice farm... Apparently great hunting.... Chief, the dog, was the last of the litter and the runt.. The sire was a sedge 80lbs and the dam about 45-50lbs a brown... and I mispoke Chief is a deadgrass... This guys name was Tyson and lived near Ames lake (near Readmond Fallcity RD) got to bring the little guy with me to work... I have an "IN" with the boss. ;) We didn't have a name picked out when ge got him. My 4yr old thought Trixy and Swoop were good names for my male... Ya not so much... While talking about dogs from my wife and my child hood, my daughter must have latched on to Chief... My father had an Alaskan malamute he rescued with that name... So when people ask me what tribe my dog is from I reply... The Marines! OSDT Master Chief! :guns: :mgun: :mgun2: :bfg:

Do you know his pedigree? A lot of very good Chessies can be found stomping around Ca.....

Carlson's and above Vernita. You think it may have been a Irish Water Spaniel? Poodles are not retrievers, can't play hunt AKC hunt test games. A common mistake however.
