Title: Beaver Trapper Needed
Post by: tmike on January 14, 2010, 04:29:49 PM
The City of Black Diamond has the permits to remove beaver from 2 sites with a possibility of more.  They got one bid and it sounded high to me, but I don't know anything about it.  I Pm'd one member here but he never returned a call. Anyone here interested that is licensed to do the deed go ahead and send me a PM and I'll give you the details and who to contact for a bid. Thanks

I wish I could help, but it's too far out of my area :bash:.  The WDFW regional office should have a list of the NWCO trappers for that area.

One issue, especially with the larger towns - maybe not Black Diamond - is that they only allow live traps to be used ( The towns parameters, not the states :dunno: :dunno:)   They mistakenly think that by catching beaver in live traps that they are not harmed and that it's "humane" :bash: :bash: :bash:

Here are the issues with that: :twocents:
1) Beaver cannot be transported/relocated per WDFW - they are either to be euthanized, or released on site. (same goes for racoons)
2) Live traps, while not killing traps, are not exactly as "humane" as our :tree1: friends would have you believe.  For beaver, the traps are typically in shallow water to hide the trap and so that when the animal gets in it, it does not drownd.  The issue with this is that, even though beaver are a water based animals, sitting in water in a steel trap four up to 24 hours will do some serious damge to one, possibly even causing it to die from hypothermia.  It will definatly be stressed.  If you did transport it some where - that adds more stress.  The site where it would in theory be released could either: a) not be able to support the animal ( especially in it's weakened stressed state - no shelter, not food it likes, whatever; or  b) hold other beaver that are highly territorial resulting in fighting  - again with bad results for a weakened stressed animal.  There’s also the issue of the problem being transfered to some one else for them to potentially have to deal with.

If you are going to euthanize the animal, which is better, an instant kill body gripping connibear, or a live trap that stresses the animal out only for it to end up with a 22 to the head a day later. :dunno:
