Never been Chukar hunting but next fall I want to give it a try. Where's a good place to start?

Anywhere along the Columbia river from Chelan to down past the Tri Cities. Chukar like high ridges with rocky, basalt outcroppings and cheat grass. Early in the season find water and you will find chukar. Later in the season they can be anywhere and it tkes some boot leather to find them. Closest place to go is Ellensburg and either go to Manastash Ridge off of Durr road or back in behind the wind farm.

It's a long haul for you, but when I was at WSU we used to hunt them along the breaks of the Snake near Wawaii. We hiked along the river on the train tracks and hunted up and down the draws. Had good success. Bring good boots and cardio conditioning, as well as strong legs, because it's steep and rough. Also rattle snakes in the early season, so be careful with your dog, if you have one.
