Title: Heavy enough arrows?

With the 6 grains per pound of draw weight, how does anyone that shoots 70 pounds or more use an arrow that is less than 30 inches long? I shoot 100 grain broadhead with cabelas carbon hunter at 9.3 gpi and nock and insert weight of 34 grains. I could knock 3 inches off by going to 125 grain broadhead but I have had good performance from these with the 100'sus my wife and I currently shoot the same BH.

What does a guy do that shoots more than 75 pounds? I hate having arrows that stick out below my bow.

Are there any inserts to add weight to the front? Thanks.

Post by: Ray on January 17, 2010, 10:08:01 PM: I'm not sure I understand your dilemma completely but whatever it is there surely could be an answer.

I don't know much about compound archery but most carbon arrows can take weighted brass inserts up front of various weights. The ones I have are in 25 or 50 grain increments for example.

The lightweight arrows fly far but sometimes don't have as much punch upon arrival. If that is the case shorter ranges and heavier arrows can be more effective. Depending on the situation.

Post by: lokidog on January 17, 2010, 10:14:35 PM: I don't mind the weight, I would just like to shoot a shorter arrow for the convenience of it not catching on brush or poking the side of the blind while I wait. Who makes the brass inserts? Is that 25 or 50 grain the weight of the insert? The aluminum ones weigh 21 grains. A 50 would allow me to reduce my arrow length by at least two inches. Thanks.

Post by: Ray on January 17, 2010, 10:18:29 PM: This is similar to what I have below. You'll probably be required to make new arrows and glue these brass inserts in with some epoxy. The broadheads screw right into them.

Just noticed the post "an offer to help". Check it out. Todd has some archery software that may help you dial in your arrow weight/spine/FOC, etc.

Bow4, saw that, i just need to figure out this length/weight thing before I can use Todd's software. Also, I have dialed my bow down a bit to rehab my elbow and do not currently know what my draw weight is, though I hope to have it back up to 70# by summer.

Carbon express is the only arrow that would be in the 430 gr
cx edge hunter 250 spine .392
Easton xx775 or xx778 2314 spine .390

Post by: lokidog on January 18, 2010, 11:53:04 AM: Well, I decided to actually mark and measure to see what minimum length my bow can safely shoot. Turns out my 29" bow can only shoot down to a 31" arrow anyways so I don't have to worry about the weight thing. :bash: I can take two inches off factory length anyways.

BTW hunt4, Carbon Express weight forward arrows suck, from my experience anyways. The ones I just bought and used at the 3D shoot seem to have a ridged finish which causes them to be noisy drawing and hard to pull out of a foam target. Also lost two fletches and had two knocks pop off. They are also the same weight as my cabelas ones at 9.3 gpi. a 27 incher with a 100 grain tip would be 385 grains by my calcs.

tad bit under spined for a mathews dren it says (CARBON EXPRESS CX EDGE HUNTER)
but since your choosing to stay with a 29 inch arrow you have alot more choices ;)
