Title: procrastination.
Post by: addicted on January 17, 2010, 11:16:35 PM
alright i've been taking my time putting these out but here are the pics of a drive hunt i went on the 9th of Jan. it was pretty cool. we ended up with 3 deer and 4 wild boar.  I had a shot at a deer but i didnt even move to shoulder my gun as there were people on the other side of it. other than that i saw bucks(not in season) and a wild boar drag 3 dogs for 200 yards up in the woods above me before the driver could catch up and dispatch him with the pistol.

ofcourse as with all the social hunts there are horns blown to gather the hunters and then a speach by the hunt host then we walk out to be placed.

i took the end of the line as i usually do because i am the youngest and have one of thefew pairs of good knees in the group.  this time that placed me at the base of a hill with some long shooting lanes in a feild.  i walkedout on the road below me to find this pig that had been shot and drug dwon the hill. the pictures dont show it well but it was a fat 50-60 kilo pig

we intended to do two drives. all the animals were shot in the first drive. second one went dry.  between the hunts we stopped to get the animals cleaned and some brats eaten by the fire. picture of the view from the gathering on top of the hill.

the second drive we were placed on a pretty long line i was close to the end with my buddy greg shown in the picture.  saw a hasse and a reh. the reh was about 600 yards away running accross a hill. so that didnt happen.

definately. someone ended up with some nice pigs. not too big, not too small.   i'm no good at german but it sounded like the hunt host was auctioning off the pigs over the phone while they were being dressed.  pigs have been hard to come by  this year and no one knows why. everyone i talk to says they have been shooting 10% or less of what they have normaly shot at this point in the year.

That looks really interesting. Do they pretty much shoot anything that comes by? Do the shooter get the animal or is it split up? Here's your steak......next   :chuckle:

the meat distribution varies from place to place hunt to hunt. i've seen big hunts where every pig under 20 kilos is given away because they dont want to take the time to process it. generally the hunt owner gets the meat but the hunter has first choice to buy it. the hunter also always gets the trophy.

this hunt we were shooting all fallow deer, all wild boar except the leading sow, and all does and fawn roh deer. the bucks lost their antlers back in october so we have to be very specific about which deer we shoot as the bucks are closed.

Thanks for sharing those picks.  I always find it interesting seeing the traditions of hunting from the old world.

the guy that shot the big pig was a buddy of mine from my hunting class. since he had the biggest animal he was the jagd konig(hunt king) so he had to buy a round of drinks for all the other hunters.

It's no wonder you don't have time to take some college classes...

Just flippin ya some crap, Annie told me she gave you a hard time about not going to school the other day.

I'm still hoping you'll go sign up for the class. starts next week. tuesday and thursday nights 6-8. you know you want to. youve got more than enough time to hunt over here.  Its good that annie looks out for me, i really wanted to sign up for classes this time around, but there was too much snow to plow  ;) with the new TDY the point is mute anyways.  leaving soon, going someplace HOT.

New hunt and pics

More than I can afford right now, but thanks.
I was kinda hoping they were made out of real horn or something, I guess those are the high end antiques?

Awesome rifle. Have always liked that style. What caliber are you shooting? Also what kind of stool is that in the pic with the rifle?

shooting a 8x57is. aka 8mm mauser. been shootingsellier and bellot 196 grain soft points but hopefully i'll reload with 200 grain nosler partitions next time around.  the stools are very popular and  come in several different styles. i got this one for free from an old hunter who was cutting back on his gear.  the dang things are expensive brand new but i think that is because the german hunting store kind of has a monopoly on so much gear like this.

here is one style that folds up into sort of a cain.

this kind gives you a wide strap to sit on.
