Title: Africa mounts?
Post by: bonneylakebowman on January 20, 2010, 10:52:54 AM
Hey guys i am going to africa in august for my first time and i am looking for a taxidermest do do some mounts for me.  Im not going to be shooting a ton of animals but there are a few i would like to get mounted.  If I shoot a kudu i would like a shoulder mount.  I want a european mount of a impala, blesbuck<sp>, warthog, and blue wildebeast.  And i would like a rug from a zebra.  Could you please send me some info on a taxidermest to look into or if you are a taxidermest could you message me some prices?

My dad and little brother might be going too so there is the potential for three people to be wanting mounts.

Get in touch with Kuduman on this forum.  He does African game as a taxidermist and also arranges trips to Africa, so he is obviously familiar with what you are inquiring about.  He's in Dayton, just east of Walla Walla.  Send him a PM.

I think BuckLucky was looking for some African game to mount. He was offering some BIG price breaks.

Might be worth checking him out.  I think he is probably the best Taxi I've seen so I wouldn't think twice about haveing him mount them.   :chuckle:

There are a lot of taxidermists that will give youy a break on your African mounts, including myself. Depending on what you take there may only be a couple of taxidemists that you can take it to.

Meaning if you take a baboon or a pig, it has to be inspected by USDA and then sent to a USDA approved taxidermist and be boiled and dipped in chemicals for a period of time.

Also when you are looking for a taxidermist, make sure you see their work, ask about their turn around times, find out how much they require down. Coming back from Africa and then having a series of trophies mounted can get expensive.

I myself have a one year turn around, I require no money down.

Hope this info helps, and whomever you choose wish you the best of luck. And have fun in Africa, the wife and I will be going in 2011

Hi All:
I had a customer in the shop yesterday and we were arranging a hunt for him for next year. We discussed taxidermy a little but I quickly reminded him that the details that you address about the hunt and the safe return of your animals are whats important NOW. When traveling to Africa and in my case when I send customers to South Africa (S.A)  I like to talk to them about the areas that I have found some of which have an associated cost that is often not realized until it's too late. Theses items are :  Import permits, weapons inspection, ownership documentation, SAP 520's, Invite letters, airport weapons restrictions. Passports, Dip and Pack facilities, Customs clearance, freight charges, Fumigation charges, International Ports of entry, Brokerage firms, USDA approved facilities, Prohibited species and USDA inspections as well as Bonded freight inspections by U.S. Customs, Bonded Freight holding facility,  Freight to approved facility locations and regional Vet inspections.
If these issues are not addressed prior to the hunt then you won't have to worry about the taxidermy charges because you won't receive the skins in the first place.
I'm not saying that you need to be an expert on all of these items but if you want to control the costs you need to be aware of what the cost are and where the hidden costs are libale to get you.
The reality is that hunters that go to Africa in Aug 2010 are likely to get their dip and pack shipment around Jan 2011 at the very earliest and more likely around Aug 2011.
I just mounted  warthog that a customer took on a S.A. Hunt in July 2008 and arrived last Aug and he'll get it back next week. 18 months from the day he harvested it. Sometimes its shorter timeframe but from what I've seen it's normally a year to get your skins.

Just my  :twocents:.
