Everyone should have a good glass or slate call in their arsenal. Good meaning different things to different people. I prefer custom call (boxes, friction, trumpets etc.) as they are more realistic and sound different than everyone else in the woods with the usual primos, knight and hale etc calls.
Don't get me wrong....they all call in turkeys. Custom calls do however make a difference on those battle smart tough ol' birds though. :twocents:
-
Fight'n purrs - Aggressive purrs with a few hat slaps thrown in simulates a turkey fight. Sometimes when nothing else seemed to work, I've gotten in some nice toms who came running in just like dogs do to a dog fight. :chuckle:
-
I no what a fight'n purr is but what is the knight and hale call all about
-
well.. looks like someone came up with a new turkey hen squeel. I've never heard it from a real hen but I heard chickend do the squeel when mounted by a rooseter....so I'll buy that one ...no..... give me 2...so Smokey won't take mine! :chuckle: :chuckle: I think Knight and Hale Make it??
-
They also make two push-pulls that are a little different pitched.

I want all of you guys/gals to buy that Hen Squeal call from H&S strut..so I know where you all are...LOL
Brings a new term to Squeal like a Hen not a Pig!...LOL There are parts of the state where you may call in more than just turkeys...LOL..Ma we have company..I heard another squealer...LOL :chuckle:
A squeal over here, a squeal over there, here a squeal, there a squeal, everywhere a squeal , squeal!..LOL :chuckle:
-
I am thinkin about ordering a scratch box call and maybe a Tube call. Any one got any input on either one? They are made by a custom call maker I bought my pot and locators from.

Funny..........I have read on some southern forums different posts regarding that call and everyone is laughing about it. Most say they have never ever heard a turkey hen make those sounds.....buyer beware...another gimmick. :bdid:
-
:yeah: Sounds like a predator call.
-
I bought a scratch box call from Ed Blankenship of Gobblers end Calls yesterday. This is a nice looking, good sounding, reasonably priced, call. Ed is located in Chewelah.
He has a nice web site: Google it @ Gobblers end Calls

I'm going to try Diaphragm Calls this year.
Any advise, or recommendation's?
-
Get a few calls from different call makers. Find out what reeds fit your mouth best and stick with those. PRACTICE PRACTICE
-
I might try a few new reeds, I see zinks and woodhaven have come out with a few new cuts I look for reed calls like that, cuz everyone make a " Bat wing" now.
Mostly I've been trying to fill my vest with custom calls made here in Wa. I picked up a Jim Nelson box call last year so I'll figure that into my new calls, plus the wife has yet to realize custom calls cost a bit more than a Quaker Boy.
-
Tom Tamer,
You wont be disappointed with the Zink reeds. I think Yelp can agree with this also.

Any advise, or recommendation's?
I used a very basic single reed diaphram call first so I could even get a sound out of it.. Lot's of spitting and choking for a while before getting it down. If you drive to work by yourself practice while your driving.. You wont annoy the wife or neighbors and can practice a little everyday. As for which brand you'll just have to try a few and see how they work for you. I have a narrow mouth so I usually trim my call a little with scissors or buy smaller calls. My 2 favorite calls came in a cheap H.S. Strut 5-call pack that was like $12.. So price isn't always the main factor.
-
if some one gets the "Hen Squeal call from H&S strut" let me know what you think of it i am thinking of getting one but there is not to much need the calls i use work fine but it has me intrested.
-
I'm new to turkey hunting, and have never even hunted turkeys before. But I plan on going out this spring.
I picked up a 3 pack of diaphram calls last year just to see if I could make them work. Anyway to of the calls don't sound very good to me, but this one seems to produce a good raspy sound to me anyway.

I want to pick up a box call soon.

Starting out you can't go wrong with a Lynch box call. Relatively inexpensive and time tested.

270Shooter..................You want either one of these.....both sound great right out of the box. Go to the Cabelas website and search the following..........
Lynch World Champion and Foolproof Turkey Calls
They are listed at $29.99, which is a decent price for a what they are. I bought my first Lynch World Champion in Charleston, South Carolina in 1967 for $20. Thought my new bride was going to kill me...lol. Because it's old and carries the Birmingham Alabama address on it, it is worth considerably more now than what I paid. In fact I have several old Lynch calls, both World Champion and Foolproof.
You can also check Ebay as there are generally a fair number on there, most older and collectable, with some new production ones. If you have a sporting goods store close to you...i.e. Cabelas, Sportsman's, White Elephant...whatever, you should be able to find one.
Again....both sound great....World Champion is a two sided call, Foolproof hen single sided with a lip stop. Can't go wrong with either.

We are heading to Montana next week, so we are stopping at cabelas in post falls. I have a 50 dollar gift card so I'll look around when I'm there, problem is I also need a duck call :chuckle:.

Duck season is over......so priority is Turkey call. :chuckle:
Whatever you don't spend on the Cabelas gift card they leave on the card for later if you don't have enough for both.

I used to pro staff for quaker boy game calls so I had all the calls that they made. Of all of them I liked the world champ mouth call, the hurrricain box call (which you can literally submerge in water, pull it out, and it continues to work perfectly) ,and the peelated woodpecker locator call which I never here anybody use in the woods, but the turkeys respond to it readly. Also try using any mouth call, and learn to crow like a rooster (chicken family) and see what happens. On birds that have been hunted hard I NEVER locate them with turkey sounds.
-
I'm thinking of pickin up a Primos Gobbler Shaker call to replace my aging HS Strut Gobble Call. :dunno: Has worked for me on occasion as a locator call to get a bird to sound off.
-
I've used both a shaker and a tube call/snuff can that does good gobbles, but never use them on public land ... too many people stalking in with loaded shotguns.
:bdid: :yike:

For those still looking..I suggest a crow call..and call on it all the time..several times..That way I know where you are at..and where the turkeys aren't...LOL

Have you read the official news release this week which is forecasting a potentially huge migration of crows into Lincoln County on or about April 15th? Olympia is predicting that this year's record NE Washington crow migration could potentially produce non-stop Rio Wild Turkey shock gobbling, that may severely interfere with the upcoming Spring Turkey Hunting activities! :yike:
Does anyone else have more details on this impending freak event in nature? I've heard that it has been linked with our abnormally warm pre-spring weather??
Turkey hunters are being cautioned to stay home until this abnormal crow migration has passed, probably sometime by the end of May this year. :chuckle:
-
i'm getting the Fever also. hanging out at customcalls.com checking out the new customs. i'm looking for mouth call's another tube maybe pot calls. thinking of a yelper. i'm lucky i can trade most of the time with my crow or Howler's kinda cool.. scratch call's are cool in eastern ceder great sound. Yelp,
What crow calls do you recommend? ;)

Yelp,
What crow calls do you recommend? ;)
Not trying to steal Yelp's thunder (he has none....lol.).....but my recommendation would be a Gibson Fat Boy. Bought a couple years ago from him back at an NWTF National (think that's where it was). I have a few other customs crow calls which are good, but Gibson's are the Cat's Meow in my opinion. Absolutely the best from the Master of killing crows. Here's a link. Any one of the three is perfect.

Phantom....wondering if I did the right thing sharing that. Maybe I rather should have sent you a PM, as now there's probably going to be a lot of crow calls out there that sound just like mine educating those gobblers.................including that Yelp guy (he always liked my crow call and I told him it was a Lohman, after which he went out and bought 3 of them.....crows go the other way when he toots...lol)..oh well, that's life...lol :bdid:

Wacent, I think you must be mistaken, Gibson is a guitar and mandolin manufacturer. I'm sure that you meant Lohman. :chuckle:
I have tried a Primos Power Crow for several years and have never gotten a Tom to sound off to it!!! Must be operator error??? :bash:
-
Phantom,
Don't feel like the loan duck I have never had real good luck with crow calls
-
Well all I can say is ....if you're going to use a crow call...........use a Gibson. You' all must be using what Yelp is using.:chuckle:
